    Monitoring platforms

This platform uses our established and highly regardedcNODE transponder technology. Kongsberg Maritimetransponders are well proven in challenging offshoreapplications within Dynamic Positioning since the80s, so are ideal for use in environmental monitoringscenarios where the attributes of toughness, reliabilityand functionality are vital.

The Stationary Sensor Network platform includesspecially developed Landers; complex sensor nodeswith a wide range of integrated sensors, including i.e.cameras, echo sounders, hydrophones, sonars for subseagas leakage detection and oceanographic sensors.KONGSBERG landers have a cable or batteries as anoption for communication and power.

The monitoring setup usually includes the simplecNODE based sensor nodes.

The combination of Landers and cNODE based singlesensor nodes results in an advanced sensor network forautonomous monitoring tailored for each application, with critical features including:

n Subsea Logging of datan On-demand uplink of selected datan Wireless communication, battery poweredn Optional Wired communication and power

Single sensor nodes use sandbag deployment and acousticrelease; the result is easy deployment and recovery.

Retrieval of environmental data from the sensor

nodes can be done in various ways including real-timeacoustic (wireless) uplink to topside vessel via a dunkingtransducer or Kongsberg HiPAP, or uplink to surfacebuoy and relay by satellite or radio to shore or vessels.Subsea data can be delivered as a direct view in topsidecommand units or in an OPC-UA server for interface tovarious topside data handling systems.By combining these main sensor platforms, stationarytethered sensor nodes and AUVs as mobile sensorcarriers, the result is a powerful and flexible collaborativesensor network that can meet almost any need forsubsea environmental monitoring at water depths downto 4000 m.

Both platforms feature a scalable wireless sensor network were each sensor node is capable of carrying various sensors for monitoring andcommunication of sensor data.

Seaglider is an autonomous underwatervehicle (AUV) developed for continuous, long term measurement of oceanographicparameters. Rather than an electricallydriven propeller, the vehicle uses smallchanges in buoyancy and wings to achieveforward motion. The systems pitch and rollare controlled using adjustable ballast (thevehicle battery). Seaglider can be equippedwith a wide range of sensors and is a suitabletool for environmental monitoring.

cNODE ready fordeployment withfloating collar, sandbag and acousticrelease for recovery.

Based upon our own industry leading hydroacoustic technology and sensor carriers,we have two main platforms for subsea environmental monitoring: Stationary SensorNetworks and AUVs. Both platforms feature a scalable wireless sensor networkwhere each sensor node is capable of carrying various sensors for monitoring andcommunication of sensor data.

    Stationary Sensor Network

Our fleet of AUVs ranges from thelightweight REMUS 100 to our flagshipHUGIN, which is capable of performingsurveys to depths of 4000 m and operatingfor up to 48 hours at a time.

AUVs operate without cable and canmanoeuvre according to a pre-programmedmission plan for days, at depths of severalthousand meters without any externalreference or operator input. The AUVcan carry virtually any sensor relevantfor environmental monitoring. They aresilent cost-effective platforms with limiteddisturbance to marine life and can coverlarge areas and navigate with high precision.

An AUV can navigate with referenceto the surface or the bottom and canget very close to targets of interest toprovide optimal high-resolution recordingconditions for sensors. Practically all existingenvironmental sensors are already interfacedand tested on Kongsberg Maritime AUVs,which because of their use as surveyplatforms, are field proven in all oceanconditions, including ice covered areas.

    Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    Vessel Mounted instruments

Our monitoring instruments such as sonars andecho sounders are widely used as vessel mountedsystems for environmental monitoring surveysfor applications such as Marine life, Subsea gasleakage detection and Pre-installation.

    Oil & Gas

We provide monitoring solutions for thewhole lifetime of an oil eld. For the variousapplications we have topside solutions fordata visualisation and data logging.

For Oil & Gas applications KONGSBERG is

    developing a new integrated solution.

Pre installation survey/baseline studiesOur systems are used to support docu-menting of marine life and natural oil and

gas leakage. These studies may also includeKongsberg GeoAcoustics sub bottom pro-

lers for detection of gas pockets in sedi -ments below seabed.

Construction & installationIn addition to construction and installation, our solutions also support the seismic phase,

where we monitor certain parameters todocument levels of environmental impact.Examples include construction noisemonitoring for assessment of impact onmarine mammals.

DrillingFor the drilling scenario we have solutionsincluding integrated landers and single sensornodes, with a wide range of sensors, formonitoring of the impact of drill cuttings onmarine life such as corals, calcareous algaes,in addition to other marine life.Simrad echo sounders developed by

    KONGSBERG are essential here.

ProductionWhen the oil eld enters the productionphase, we provide solutions for monitoring a

wide range of parameters like subsea oil andgas leakage detection, where KONGSBERGdeveloped echo sounders and sonars arewell suited for detecting subsea oil and gasleakage. This, in combination with KONGSBERGsolutions for monitoring of wellhead pressureand temperature, enables our customers

to keep a real time view of any impact andindicators of risk; key elements to maintainsafety and provide the basis for fast responseto any incident.

DecommissioningFor the decommissioning phase, we delivera wide range of instruments for monitoringacross the entire spectrum, including forexample, KONGSBERG subsea cameras forinspection by AUV or ROV.

Oceanography & researchFor oceanographic and ocean observato-ries KONGSBERG uses special set-ups tocover a variety of projects in the categoryof research, metocean, marine life, sheryresearch and aquaculture (sea farming).Commonly used sensors are echo sounders, sonars, hydrophones and oceanographicsensors like Salinity, ADCP and CTD. In theseapplications we use both wireless and cablecommunications solutions.Sensor carriers may be subsea sensor nodes, surface vessels, AUVs or gliders dependingon the application.

    Arctic operations

For Arctic applications that include off-shore oil & gas operations including seismicoperations, we monitor for speci c Arcticparameters, such as presence of ice and icethickness combined with sea current datafrom ADCP. Our solutions provide data forice management support during marine op-erations. Our sonars, mounted on vessels, arealso used for detection and categori sation oficebergs.

    Deep Sea MineralExploration

The offshore activities within deep sea a

mineral exploration are increasing. For envi-ronmental impact assessment of operations,KONGSBERGs subsea solutions can be usedfor baseline studies and monitoring during andafter operations. Of special importance here isturbidity monitoring and current profling aswell as observe marine life. Subsea noise mayalso be an important para meter to monitor. ForROV mounting, KONGSBERGs subsea camerasare widely used. In addition to environmentalassessment, the KONGSBERG subsea solutionis widely used for survey and mapping prior todevelopment.

    Hydrophone applications

Noise level monitoringNumerous offshore applications within

renewables or oil & gas are involved in theproduction of man-made underwater noise.Examples are construction noise from pilingduring installation of wind farms or noisefrom operation of airgun arrays duringseismic operations. Such operations cangenerate noise levels that may have potentialto cause harm to sh and marine mammalslike whales and seals.KONGSBERG has developed hydrophonesolutions for monitoring of background noiseprior to development and noise level duringconstruction and operation.

Kongsberg Maritime provides instrumentation for ROVs

Underwater Sound detection/monitoring.Subsea gas leakage can be passivelydetected by the use of hydrophone arrays

    on the seabed.

Such leakages can be natural seepage of CO 2 or Methane from the seabed. The hydrophones may also be used whenlooking for leakage from subsea gas

    reservoirs, production units and pipelines.

Marine mammals like whales can be detectedby hydrophones picking up the sound ofvocalization from mammals.

This is used both for marine science and alsouseful as a tool for detection of mammalsprior to the start of an offshore applicationsuch as Seismic or similar operations wherethe operator must be able to identify thatmammals are not present within the speci carea.

The KONGSBERG RUNES hydrophonebuoy is used in applications for noise levelmonitoring in offshore renewable as wellas other underwater sound recordings.

KONGSBERG has a skilled team specialisedfor under water sound and noise monitoringthat offers services related to the use ofhydrophone solutions.

KONGSBERGs technical experts select ahydrophone with the right characteristicsfor the speci c application. This would bea KONGSBERG or third party hydrophone, depending on the requirements.

Minutes of recordings from a Simrad scientific echo sounder; wave activitycan be seen on the surface, a school of fish has been swimming by, and

jellyfish can be seen swimming slowly through the acoustic beam

    Marine mammals

Marine mammals differ from other oceanbiology as they feed in the deep oceans butbreathe air from the surface. Observing andmonitoring these animals can therefore bechallenging. In some situations operations

are being carried out where you want to beassured that no mammals are present withina certain area. For example, where there isseismic shooting and piling. Passive acoustictechniques use hydrophones to listen forwhales, but this technique is dependent onthe mammal actually vocalizing, which theydo not always do.

Omni directional sonars have proven tobe very ef cient in order to establish if amammal is present or not. The Simrad omnisonars transmit both 360 horizontallyand 180 vertically, enabling you to follow

the animal from the surface into the deepocean. In the surfacing part both bubblesfrom the wake, the whale itself and also itsvocalization can be observed on the sonarscreen. All Kongsberg Maritime sonars andecho sounders have the ability of a soft startwith reduced power in early transmission toavoid transmission with mammals in the nearvicinity of the transducer.

    Ecosystem monitoring

Revealing the secrets of the deepAcoustic sensing enables non-invasive learning about the aquatic ecosystem.Active acoustics have been used by academia and governmental institutions fordecades to quantify sh stocks in order to manage the populations. Recentlythe management focus has shifted from individual sh stocks towards a moreholistic ecosystem approach, looking at the whole food web from small planktonto large mammals.Through the extensive range of Simrad scienti c echo sounders, multibeams

and sonars, Kongsberg Maritime is well positioned to give the users the verybest overview of what happens below the surface. From layers of zooplanktondrifting around the oceans, sh feeding on the plankton and predator preyinteractions between sh and mammal, acoustics will reveal it all withoutdisturbing the actual interactions. All systems are calibrated in order to outputabsolute values of the biomass observed, and all data is stored in a well-documented RAW data format that has been scrutinized by scientists worldwide.

whistles also appear on the screen.
