The Main elements of EMAS for a company:• approve an environmental policy for the

company;• carry out an environmental review;• lay down objectives for a lasting

improvement of environmental performance;

• introduce an environmental program for the industrial site;

• establish an environmental management system;

• implement, or have implemented, environmental audits;

• publish a separate environmental statement.

The successful integration of Energy Management System applied to Environment Management System and cleaner production assessment• A double loop including:• A large cycle in 3 years for EMAS

requirements• A small cycle in 1 year for yearly

improvement programs • An extra cycle coping

environment and energy policy for company values and benefits

ISO 14001 and EMAS• ISO 14001 is an

international standard for certification

• EMAS is a regulation for registration.

• EMAS stresses more requirements for continuous improvement.

• The company with EMAS registration is committed to keep up and avoid negative reactions from the public.

Profitability with Energy ManagementA survey was done in 1995, on 67 Norwegian companies showed “Cleaner Production Assessment” resulted in better profitability (Amundsen and Møller 1995).

• energy conservation may contribute significantly to the results;

• energy advisors positively influence the results with regard to energy savings, economical and environmental improvements;

• it is natural that energy should be integrated in cleaner production assessments in most sectors

Environmental Accounting• The format of an environmental

accounting system is crucial to an environmental review.

• All significant consumption of energy/raw materials/water and additives is to be recorded and quantified.

• An environmental accounting system. Mass and energy entering the system is transformed to products, by-product s, emissions, effluents, and waste

(Amundsen 1993, p.89)

Energy and Environmental Analyses

A Sampleof Cleaner Production assessment

The objectives: Identify possible options, calculate the effects on the environment,

• Detailed mass and energy balances can be used as a basis for brain storming sessions on improvement measures.

• An important task for the project manager during this phase is to arrange the brainstorming sessions and record proposals.

• The proposals are then subjected to a technical and financial analysis, and a list of the measures arranged by priority is submitted.

How to Determine Improvement Options

The list of improvement options created with the help of a CP (cleaner production) assessment

An example of an environmental program

• This is not an EMAS stipulation, but targeting beneficial. Specific people are assigned for measures.

• Deadlines are needed.• Resources (financial and

time) are allocated.• Training program is needed

for implementing

Energy Monitoring System (EMS)

• Measure the energy consumption; energy consumption is to be measured continually and on a regular basis.

• Find environmental performance indicators (EPIs). The energy consumption is combined with other measurement data. EPIs should be calculated by a responsible person frequently and reported to the top management.

• Implement measures if necessary. EPIs should be addressed in the appropriate organizational forums, so that corrective measures may be carried out in the event of deviance.

Eco-Lighthouse Environmental responsibility in practice

• Eco-Lighthouse is Norway’s most widely used certification scheme for enterprises.

• Seeking to document their environmental efforts and demonstrate social responsibility.

ProcessesProduction at the MAPEI technician in Nord-Odal is divided into liquid products and powder products.

1. Liquid productsProduction of additives for concreteProduction is a mixing and / or dissolution process chemicals in a closed system and provides no byproducts. Production takes place without air emissions or water.Production of thermosettingProduction is a mixing and dispersion of chemicals, fillers and pigments.The process makes no byproducts. Production takes place without air emissions or water.

2. Powder ProductionProduction of special mortarsThe production is a mechanical mixture of chemicals, cements and special sand.The process makes no byproducts.The production processes take place in a closed facility without air emissions or water.commodity StorageAll chemicals used in the production are stored in their own thoughts. Except tank base epoxy, all thoughts secured against emissions in that they are placed in the collecting tanks. IN the transport of raw materials may accidentally occur, for example. in that packaging is damaged, and smaller amounts of chemicals leaking out within a limited area. It is set out absorberson all critical locations.

Production volume of consumption of raw materials, water and energy

The amount of hazardous waste is largely stable, and is still within what one might describe as normal fluctuations.

The decline in amount is probably the result of reduced production activity.The same applies to the reduction in deposit mortar dust.

It has in many years been focusing on reducing the amount of wash water used in production. All production processes are reviewed with a view to using less water each washing process. In recent years we have seen that the wash water quantity has increased significantly due to production increase and high percentage returns from customers. For 2008, it seems that one has got effect of the measures which were performed in 2007. Nevertheless, the proportion lower than would normally be, because strong reduction in the production of additives in the last 2-3 months due to "Financial crisis". The same consideration is also applicable for 2009.
