2. Product

2.1 Product descriptionThe Kingspan Kooltherm ® K5 is a rigid thermoset modified resin insulant faced on both sides with a glass tissue based facing. The product is available in variable thicknesses from 20mm up to 200mm. This EPD covers one of the most common sold thickness of 100mm with an R-value of 5,0 m²·K/W. The facing is applied per m² and is independent of the thickness.

2.2 ApplicationDue to its high insulating value the Kooltherm K5 is extremely suitable for use as external thermal insulation underneath applicable render systems. 2.3 Technical Data

2.4 Placing on the market / Application rulesFor the placing on the market Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 dated from 9 March applies /CPR/. Products need a Declaration of Performance taking into consideration /EN 13166/, Thermal insulation materials for buildings - Factory made phenolic foam (PF) – Specification and the CE-marking. For the application and use of the products the national provisions apply.

2.5 Delivery statusThe products are delivered in standard dimensions 1200 x 400mm in thicknesses varying from 20 to 200mm. Products are packed up to 27 boards per pack.

2.6 Base materials / Ancillary materials The main materials are Kooltherm phenolic (PF) resin (about 70%) added a catalyst and additives(~16%). In the factory, the resin is foamed onto a facing material (9%) into a rigid foam using a propellant with no ozone depletion potential (5%). Due to the closed cells, the blowing agent remains in the foamed cells.

2.7 ManufacturePhenolic foam is produced by the use of resol resin, calcium carbonate, a catalyst and blowing agent. The cell structure is formed in the resin under the influence of heat released during the chemical reaction. Hereby, the blowing agent is incorporated into the material which forms a solid and very fine cell structure, which is nearly 100% closed. The foam is applied on the glass fiber facings. After this, the thickness and strength is determined by the conveyor belt where upper and lower rollers compress the material into the desired thickness. The board is sawed into the correct size. If necessary, the boards are stacked and stored for a few hours to dry in an oven, and then cut and packed according to the product specification.

2.8 Environment and health during manufacturing

The production is carried out in accordance with all national guidelines and regulation.

2.9 Product processing/InstallationBoards of the external wall board are mechanically fixed to the exterior of masonry external walls. Cutting should be carried out either by using a fine toothed saw or a sharp knife. The material is considered chemically inert and no specific protection is needed. The product requires the installation of a further exterior cladding.

2.10 PackagingThe product is packaged flat and shipped in units of typically 12 boards. On average, the consumption of packaging is 25g per kg final product, composed of approx 80% polyethylene film, 20% expanded polystyrene skids and thermoplastic adhesive. All of the packaging material, except the adhesive, can be recycled.

2.11 Condition of useUnder standard conditions of use, the construction material does not display any material change during the period of use.

2.12 Environment and health during useInhalation: Dust is non-hazardous.As with all cutting procedures it is recommended that a disposable dust mask is worn. Where dust is generated through mechanical cutting in confined spaces, it is recommended that extraction is used.Hands: It is recommended that gloves are worn when handling the products.Skin: Non-sensitising.When facings containing glass fibres are handled, skin irritation may occur. Wash carefully using soap and water or an appropriate cleanser to remove.

2.13 Reference service lifeThe reference service life is not to be declared in this EPD as it covers cradle-to-gate production and no use stage.

2.14 Extraordinary effects

Fire

The Kooltherm K5 achieves two sets of Euroclass results according to /EN 13823/ when exposed to a single burning item (SBI):

The Kooltherm product itself as "Product as placed on the market"

The Kooltherm product installed in an "End-use classification"

Name ValueBuilding material class (product) CSmoke gas development (product) s2

Burning droplets (product) d0Building material class (end use) BSmoke gas development (end use) S1

Burning droplets (end use) d0

WaterThe closed cell structure of the product resists both moisture and is water vapour open.

Mechanical destructionThe material is considered chemically inert and is not expected to present a risk if mechanically destructed.

2.15 Re-use phaseIf the insulation boards are dismantled from the wall structure in entire pieces they could be directly reusable in the same application.

2.16 DisposalThe following points describe the product disposal:

Waste insulation is non-hazardous. Product dust created in the installation

process is regarded as nuisance dust only due to its inert nature.

Observe usual safety precautions with polythene bags, wrapping and packaging.

Page 4: ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION Kingspan Insulation ... · ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION as per ISO 14025 and EN 15804 Owner of the Declaration Kingspan Insulation ... into

Waste product should be disposed of in accordance with local laws and regulations. Disposal key no. 17 06 04 "Insulation materials other than those mentioned in 17 06 01 and 17 06 03” in accordance with /EWC 2002/.

The product is disposed of differently in each country. It is suitable for incineration with energy recovery but is also landfilled.

3. LCA: Calculation rules

3.1 Declared UnitThe declared unit and conversion factors are listed in the table below.

Declared unitName Value UnitDeclared unit , thickness 100mm 1 m2

Gross density 35 kg/m3

Conversion factor to 1 kg 0.286 -Declared unit 0.1 m3

3.2 System boundaryType of EPD: Cradle to gate, phase A1-A3The following processes were included in the A1-A3 production stage of Kooltherm:

Manufacture of preliminary products (Resin, additives, blowing agent)

Transportation of raw materials and preliminary products to the plant

Manufacturing process in the plant including energy, water consumption, disposal of residual materials and consideration of any emissions

Manufacture and transport of packaging materials.

3.3 Estimates and assumptionsNo major assumptions not mentioned elsewhere in this section have been made.

3.4 Cut-off criteriaNo deliberate cut-off in the collection of primary data has been performed.

3.5 Background dataBackground data is taken from the /GaBi 6 software/, see www.gabi-software.com/databases/

3.6 Data qualityThe input data for raw material production and the consumption of process energy is measured data. The background data relates to the year 2012 with regards to material composition and process data. The GaBi 6 electricity grid mix relates to 2009 data from the International Energy Agency.

3.7 Period under reviewThe input data for raw material production and the consumption of process energy on the manufacturing facility was measure data during January 1st 2010 to December 1st 2010, i.e. collected over an 11 month period.

The data recording software was changed in the beginning of December 2010; hence consistent data from the last month of 2010 was not available.

3.8 AllocationEnergy recovery from incineration of used packaging and other waste is looped back into the main process to offset input of primary energy.Used plactic packaging undergoes a recycling process and is looped back to replace input of primary plastic granulate for making plastic film packaging material.

3.9 ComparabilityBasically, a comparison or an evaluation of EPD data is only possible if all the data sets to be compared were created according to /EN 15804/ and the building context, respectively the product-specific characteristics of performance, are taken into account.

4. LCA: Scenarios and additional technical information

The modules A4-A5 as well as the entire module groups B, C and D are not declared for the product.

6. LCA: Interpretation

The raw material supply (A1) makes up 80-100% of the total result of most impact categories with the exception of POCP. Here the raw material production generate one third of the impact and the A3 emissions

two thirds. The A3 impact is from VOC emissions related to use of blowing agents in the resin expansion. The transport (A2) contribute only little with 1-2% of the impacts, the exception being AP and EP where the contribution to the total is 8-9%.

7. Requisite evidence

7.1 VOC EmissionsThe product is not intended for indoor use and hence no specific VOC emission tests are performed.

7.2 Leaching performanceThe insulation boards are covered with external cladding and will not come in contact with water under normal circumstances and under correct installation, and no leaching tests are performed.
