PROGRAM 1

CORPORATE ACTIVITIES

Convenor: Director Environment & Planning

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS • Increase in implementation of monitoring/maintenance schedules for foreshore assets by 2012/13 Foreshore assets included in the asset register, with condition assessments conducted and maintenance schedules developed. • Number of staff sustainability training sessions/courses provided annually. A total of 25 sustainability workshops/programs/and training sessions were run for staff in 2012/13. • Environmental Impact Assessment implemented by staff. Environmental Impact Assessment templates have been completed by 95% of relevant staff for projects works that may impact upon the local environment. This will continue to be monitored. • Increase in the purchase of sustainable products by 2012/13. Council has increased the purchase of sustainable products across Council for office use, and events. In June 2013, sustainable event packages made up of sustainable products including reusable/biodegradable or compostable plates, cutlery, cups and napkins as well as fair trade tea and coffee, were provided to six sections of Council responsible for holding events/workshops/meetings.

Purchase a worm farm/compost bin for staff use in Council buildings to reduce organic waste to landfill

PROGRAM 2

ATMOSPHERE

Convenor: Director Environment & Planning PERFORMANCE INDICATORS • 20% reduction of Council’s corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 2010 based on 1995 levels. A greenhouse gas inventory was conducted for the 2010/11 FY. The target of 20% reduction by 2010 was not met. Council’s corporate greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 12.5%. This reduction was due to small efficiency changes as well as the purchase of 100% green power for street lighting and 10% green power for Council’s four main sites. A new greenhouse gas reduction target has not been set. Council has ceased purchasing green power in July 2013 which will impact on Council’s greenhouse gas emissions. • 10% reduction in Council’s energy consumption by 2012/13 In 2012/13 Council achieved a 6% reduction in Council’s energy consumption based on 2008/09 levels. Due to offsets and abatement measures Council’s 2012/13 greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 436.2 tCO2e (21.8%) on 2008/09 levels.

Sub-Program 2.01 – Sustainable Energy Use Co-ordinator: Manager Environment and Services

10 YEAR OBJECTIVES

To reduce the use of fossil fuels and the release of greenhouse gas emissions to a sustainable rate so that current climatic systems are protected.

3 YEAR OBJECTIVES

A To reduce Council energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. B To improve the energy efficiency of Council assets, including street lighting and buildings. C To increase the percentage of energy purchased by Council from renewable sources.

To ensure transport needs in Mosman are primarily met by sustainable transport modes that do not emit greenhouse gases, urban air pollutants and are energy and space efficient. To ensure good air quality in Mosman that does not compromise human health or amenity or ecological processes.

3 YEAR OBJECTIVES A To reduce pollutant emissions from and the use of energy intensive vehicles in Council's fleet. B To provide improved infrastructure and support for sustainable transport in Mosman. C To improve the uptake of walking and cycling in the community. D To reduce emissions of urban air pollutants associated with fossil fuel combustion.

• Reduction in Council’s water consumption by 2012/13 Council’s water consumption was reduced by 480 KL in 2012/13 comparative to 2011/12. • Reduction in Community water consumption by 2012/13

The total water consumption in the Mosman LGA decreased in 2012/13.

• Mosman waterways compliant with recommended water quality guidelines

The Harbourwatch data for 2012/13 rate all of Mosman’s beaches as ‘Good’, meaning the water quality of the beaches is suitable for swimming majority of the time, accepting after heavy rain. • Tonnes of pollutants captured by the SQIDS annually

A total of 405.64 tonnes of pollutants were captured by the Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices (SQIDS) during 2012/13.

To reduce Council's water consumption to contribute to a sustainable water supply and the long term ecological health of rivers affected by water storages.

There has been 100% compliance with the Environmental Management Plans for Balmoral Oval / Park and for the Northern Nursery School. Since Balmoral Oval and foreshore remediation has been completed a quarterly audit of the oval/foreshore has been conducted to ensure compliance with the Environmental Management Plan. The Northern Nursery School monitors the site on a monthly basis and provides a report to Council, followed up by an annual audit.

WASTE

• To achieve 67% diversion rate of waste to landfill by 2014. In 2012/13 Council achieved a 45.8% diversion rate of waste to landfill. Council continues to increase recycling rates, reduce waste and is improving its public place recycling program. The process has commenced for an AWT to be established at Kimbriki which will remove organic matter from the waste stream for composting.

• 6% reduction in overall waste generation on 2007/08 figures by 2012/13.

Waste to landfill in 2007/08 was 6891 tonnes. Waste generated in 2012/13 was 6455 tonnes. Council has achieved a reduction of 436 tonnes of waste comparative to 2007/08, equating to a 6.4% reduction.

Approximately 20 waste programs were implemented during 2012/13, including a Business program, Love Food Hate Waste, Clothes Swap, Second Hand Saturday, Compost revolution, Schools Program, Composting/Worm farming workshops, and other waste workshops and events
