Fact Sheet | Flying Ants
Termite or flying ant?
An important part of good integrated pest management is strong knowledge of the pests you encounter. And when it comes to flying ants, we find that identification of the pest can be half the battle. Flying ants are frequently confused with termites, although there are three simple characteristics that distinguish a winged ant from a winged termite. The graphic below is from the University of Florida and can be found at the following website: http://flrec.ifas.ufl.edu/entomo/ants/Ant vs Termite.htm
Winged ant Winged termite

Managing winged ants and winged termites
If you can, save a sample of the winged insect so we can confirm its identity. If you are positive you have flying ants, follow the steps below:
• Clean the area with Eco Wash mixed at 4 ounces per quart of water. • If you can find the hole the ants emerging from, flood it with Eco Wash. This will help remove the
pheromone that the winged ants follow. • After the area dries, use 100% silicone caulk to seal the area. • If you are not sure please mark the area that you first noticed the insects in.
