siteAnalysis of the site, concrete lawn, was undertaken. The site was observed in 2 hour intervals between 9am and 7pm on a typical day. The use of the site and intensity of the use over time were noted, and shown in the diagrams. Each coloured dot represents an instance of an activity. Blue is walking, green is waiting, red is eating/drinking, and yellow is socialising.

grid + frameThe model was made by using repeated elements to create a grid and frame. Inspiration was drawn from the forms of the human body, and organ systems. The intention was to create an or-ganic, rounded frame and grid structure. Model made of card.

landformThe intention of this landform model was to explore the human effect on the landscape, and the possibil-ities if that effect were to be magnified. Using the ideas of how people move through landscapes from the site analysis, paths were drawn and sunk deep into the ground plane. It explores how our landscape might look if our travels across the Earth were to leave a deep impression. Model made of foam-core.

assemblageThe purpose of this model was to combine the grid + frame model and landform model using the assemblage technique of smoothing. The intention was to smooth together the layered, con-toured form of the landform model with the rounded framework of the grid model. Model made of foam-bard and card.

narrative & collageThis narrative represents the program of meeting, and the atmo-sphere associated with meetings. The collage was then created to visually represent the narrative. Collage made of paper and card.

A contradiction of private and

public, a small oasis of quiet

inside the bustle of the world.

Distinctive to all those who knew

it, they met here. Travellers from

worlds apart, drawn together

by the place. Some had planned

this for lifetimes, and some had

no plan at all. Their stories con-

nected, changed, and continued

there. An exchange of words,

ideas, lives. And when all was

said and done, they moved on, to

another here.

superimpositionTo create the superimposition collage, multiple images from past exercises were layered, using similar shapes and atmospheres to align them. This col-lage uses the narrative collage, the assemblage plan drawing, and the site analysis. The high-action section of the site analysis was placed on top of the people meeting, who were then encircled by the assemblage plan. A plan drawing was created from this superimposition collage.

experienceThis collage-based section was based on the experience of concrete. The aim was to create places for meetings, using the narrative collage as inspriration for the atmosphere. The idea of coloured ‘zones’ stems from the site analysis, where people’s actions in different places created places of different colours. The curving shapes of the concrete is a common thread between every design over the se-mester.

final projectThis was designed as a series of meeting points. Inspired by the common theme of circles through the semesters work, the intention was to play with the meeting points created when circles over-lap. The narrative’s main point was that meeting happen in private places in public spaces, and this design was made to reflect that by creating small, intimate spaces in the middle of huge open areas. Concrete and colours were carried through from the semester’s work.

final projectBy interlocking layers of these circles, different levels of privacy were created in the space, lend-ing themselves to different kinds of meetings. The mid-level areas allow small children to run through the space unobstructed, while adults must duck to get inside. This creates a space that is simultaneously private and open, as passers-by can see the people’s lower body but no more. The spaces where entry points had been cut in the lower circles are inset into the ground to dis-rupt the ground plane, and create a visual distinction between the spaces.
