DO NOT PANIC IF YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED IN A LAB

AS LONG AS YOU ARE REGISTERED FOR THE COURSE ITSELF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE REGISTERED FOR A LAB

BEGIN BY ATTENDING THE LAB THAT BEST FITS YOUR SCHEDULE

Supplementary Textbook

Bloss, F.D., 1971

Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry

Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 545 pp.

You must also have a mineral identification kit (sold in the lab for ~$12; proceeds go to the student clubs)

You may also want to purchase a mineral identification book such as the Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals

Course ObjectivesIn the lectures I will concentrate on the identification, uses, crystal chemistry, and structural aspects of minerals, with some material on the quantitative evaluation of physical properties. By the end of the course you should be familiar with basic concepts in mineralogy and crystallography, and will be ready to take more advanced courses in these subjects.

There will be two parts to each lab. The first 90 minutes will feature a lab assignment, and the last hour and a half will be used for mineral identification. By the end of the course you should be able to recognize approximately 70 minerals in hand specimen and know their formulas.

Case Studies

Wherever possible I will use case studies from my own research and that of my students.

Careers

Whenever possible I will highlight different career paths and opportunities in the geosciences.
