3 Introduction to the EOW unit The EOW unit has been designed to supply a telephone service channel to be used in networks composed by new generation SRAL XD and SRA 4 equipment. The channel availability will be realized on request in selected stations, by adding the EOW unit to the equipment rack. In a network made up completely of SRAL XD or SRA4 equipment, it will have the role of service phone channel. In existing SRAL networks, where the nodes are equipped with previous generation equipment, there are the plug-in EOW units currently available. In case of an mixed SRAL/SRAL XD network, total compatibility and interworking is assured between present and past EOW units. The new EOW unit described in this manual is also compatible with existing PDH service channels, employing E&M decadic signalling codes.

4 Main Features of the EOW unit Below are described the main features of the EOW unit:

2 x V.11 Interface (64 Kbit/s) for connection to SRAL XD and SRA 4 IDUs (User Channel). Both (1+1) e 2x(1+0) network topologies are supported.

1. Interworking with Siemens small capacity equipment (SRAL) of previous generation. 2. 2 analog interfaces, with 4 Wire+E&M signalling, to guarantee compatibilità with both versions of

EOW SRA L (612-910/21 e 612-910/22). 3. Through E&M decadic signalling, compatibility is ensured with external equipment using this kind

of interface. 4. Selective call (with inclusion function and multiple call) and omnibus call. 5. Local station number, selectable between 2 or 3 digits, and locally programmable through an RS232

interface. 6. Card Fail alarm reporting to supervisory system or radio equipment. 7. Can be used as an analog to digital converter for analog voice channel extension on V.11 channels.

It guarantees error-free data transmission for V.32 point-to-point leased line modems (up to 9600 b/s) and V.32 bis (up to 14.400 b/s).

8. Uses the same handset of the SRA L (634-901/03). 9. Mechanical structure suitable for 19” and ETSI-N3 sub-rack mounting, with 1 SU height. 10. -48V power supply. 11. EMC/Safety compliant , CE marked.

5 General notes The EOW unit allows access to the telephone service channel, both for the small capacity radio system (SRAL XD) and for the medium capacity one (SRA 4), exploiting the USER byte in the Base Band frames of PDH and SDH systems. The EOW unit interfaces the telephone handset with keypad on one side, using DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency) signalling system; on the other side the interface is with above mentioned systems, through access ports with V.11 levels.

The unit integrates the circuits of branching, exchange, and restitution of the voice channel and E&M signalling, to guarantee full interworking with the present telephone channel of SRAL networks, as well as older PDH selective call systems. Some network topologies are shown in Figure 1. The block diagram of the EOW unit is shown in Figure 2 and includes the following devices:

In systems with two separate multiplexing sections (1+1 and 2x(1+0) systems), the operator has access to USER byte on side 1 and side 2, without duplicating the unit. To the aim of the phone service, the equipment can always be considered in (1+1) configuration, i.e. the voice signal must be paralleled in the transmission path and mixed in the receiving path in all directions. In Figura 3 is shown the block diagram of the EOW unit.

6 Connection type The user has access to the telephone service channel through the standard telephone interface, 2 wires (TIP, RING) using the Bantam type jack socket. The EOW unit allows the following connection types for stations belonging to the service network:

Between any two stations (selective call) Between one station and all others (omnibus connection)

The two EOW extension ports (4 wire +E&M analog interfaces) will be used towards external equipment.

7 Service network access modes The access is intended to the areas relevant to multiplexing sections of the aggregate signal. The EOW unit, if free, will be automatically connected to the calling section, following the reception of a call. In case of outgoing calls, the access to the line is granted by lifting the handset and selection, if the line is in the free state.

8 Calls

8.1 General aspects The service channel employs in-band signalling, DTMF type, and E&M on analog expansion ports. It allows the following functionalities:

selective and omnibus calls on line. multiple selective call (1 added user).

The EOW unit includes the circuits necessary for generating, sending, receiving and detecting a call. The number selection is done through the handset keypad. The user address for each station and EOW unit is performed locally through the LCT (RS-232) port. The allowed address ranges for the unit are:

2 digits: from 10 to 99 3 digits: from 100 to 999

Ranges from 01 to 09 and 001 to 099 are reserved. To ensure compatibility towards PDH networks of previous generations (connected through analog 4-wire+E&M) extensions it is necessary to dial “*” before entering the station address of the PDH network. The same procedure must be employed when the user wants to connect to networks equipped with selective call units using more than 2 or 3 digit numbering plans. When the interconnection with EOW channels of SRAL networks is required, it will be necessary to connect only the phone wires (Tx+Rx) of both equipment on the analog 4-Wire interfaces. With a suitable cable, cross-connect only the TX with RX on both sides, leaving E&M wires open.

8.2 Line engagement The line engagement by the user happens automatically when going off-hook. The user will receive, in case of free line, the “free” continuous tone, or the “busy” tone if the line is already engaged. In the first case, on every station of the area, the green Line LED will go ON, and all other users will receive a “busy” tone should they go off-hook. The user has a time limit of 30s ± 5% to dial a number, otherwise the line will be automatically disengaged, and the green led will go off on all EOW units. The calling user will receive a busy tone and will have to hangup and redial again. In case of automatic line disengagement, it is always possible to dial the user that has left the handset off-hook. In this case the called user, to answer, must first hangup and then go off-hook.

8.3 Selective Call In case of selective call it is possible to address the call towards any user of the line, by dialing 2 or 3 digits through the DTMF handset keypad. Every EOW unit, after the reception of 2 or 3 digits, inhibits the reception of other numeric digits. After the selection the calling user receives from the called unit the “call control” tone. The call reception causes the activation of the acoustic announciator and the flashing green line Led, on the called unit. If, within 60s ± 5% of time, the caller does not receive the answering code from the called user, it will automatically generate the line disengage code, switching all green Leds off. The calling user will receive a “busy” tone and the called acoustic announciator will go off; the calling user is always enabled to receive calls. The calling user will have to hangup and go off-hook again to perform another call. When the called user goes off-hook:

1. The answering code will be automatically sent on line. 2. The local acoustic announciator and the call control tone will go off, the green Led will be fixed On. 3. The voice link will be activated

The answering code reception on the calling side will cause: 1. Inhibition of the 60s timer 2. The activation of the voice link

The line will be disengaged when the calling or called party goes on-hook; the other end will receive the busy tone. The line disengagement by at least one user allows the further reception of calls by both parties. If the call is directed to a user whose station address is composed by more than 2 or 3 digits, or belongs to a network that uses E&M signalling, it is necessary to precede the actual number with the “*” DTMF code. This event causes the automatic generation of the answering code by the local EOW unit, with a call evolution similar to the above. There are some special functions available to the user: the inclusion function and the multiple selective call.

Inclusion Function A selective conversation between two users of the line must be reserved. Anyway, a user not enganged in the same conversation can bidirectionally insert its voice in the ongoing conversation, by keeping the INS button pressed; the insertion will be signalled on line by a permanent inclusion tone. The exclusion from the insertion is obtained by releasing the button or by hanging up the handset. Multiple selective call During a selective conversation between two users, one of them can make an additional call towards a third party, thereby realizing the multiple selective call function. Pressing and releasing the INS key on the front panel, he will locally enable the lighting of the yellow Led, and send on the line the DTMF “D” code, that enables the “presetting to multiple selective call” mode on all EOW units. The voice link between the two users is momentarily suspended, until the emission of the second or third selection digit. Moreover, the calling user can disengage the line before the answer of the third party, by pressing and releasing the INS key (sending the DTMF “C” code). When the inter-digit or the answering timeout has elapsed the calling party will automatically send the “C” code bringing the line back to the selective conversation state. If, during the multiple selective conversation, one of the two users of the originating selective call presses the INS key (sending the DTMF “D” code), it would hangup the additional conversation, bringing the line backto the situation of presetting to multiple selective call (this has the aim to limit the maximum number of users to 3). The evolution of the optical indications on the EOW units, in case of selective call and multiple selective, is show in Table 1.

8.4 Omnibus call In case of omnibus calls, it is possible to address the call to all users of the SRAL or SRA4 service area, by selecting the fixed “00” number with the DMTF handset. After the selection the calling user receives the call control tone locally generated. The call reception automatically connects all the free EOW units to the line with the activation of flashing green and yellow leds, and of the acoustic announciator. If, after a 60s ± 5% time limit, no called party answers, the local acoustic announciator will go off, the green led will be fixed on and the yellow led will continue to flash. The calling user generates the line disengagement code (causing the switchoff of the leds), receives the busy tone but is enabled to the reception of further calls; to perform another call he will have to hangup and go off-hook again. If at least one of the called parties answers and goes off-hook:

1. Locally the acoustic announciator will go off, the green led will be fixed on (only on stations that have answered to the call) and the answer code will be sent to the calling user.

2. The activation of the voice link on the receiving side only The user that answered the call is initially capable of receiving the voice from the calling party. To enable the bidirectional voice link, the called user must press the INS key.

The reception of the answer code by the calling party causes locally:

1. The interruption of the “call control tone” generated locally 2. The interruption of the 60s timer 3. The activation of the voice link

On all the other connected EOW units, that did not answer to the call, the green and yellow leds will continue to flash and the acoustic announciator will be kept active for a time of 60s ± 5% starting from the beginning of the call. After the above timeout, on all EOW units that did not answer the call, the acoustic announciators will be locally deactivated, the green leds will be fixed on, and the yellow leds will be flashing. The evolution of optical indications on the front panel, in the omnibus call case, is shown in table 2.

9 DTMF signalling codes The DTMF codes sent on the line conform to Recc. ITU-T Q.22 e Q.23. The service telephone units can also generate and detect the DMTF alphanumeric codes A, B, C and D, to perform the proprietary signalling function listed below: DTMF code A: "line engagement"; DTMF code B: "line disengagement" or "line reset"; DTMF code C: "answer to a call" and "reset of call, and presetting to multiple selective call"; DTMF code D: " presetting to multiple selective call and shutdown of any added ongoing conversation".

12 Mechanical characteristics and Front Panel Description

This section describes the mechanical characteristics of the EOW unit. The EOW unit comes with a sub-rack mounting unit, suitable for 19” rack or ETSI-N3 mounting. Included in the kit are the adapting brackets, for extending the 19” rack format to the ETSI-N3 width. The basic equipment includes one EOW unit, mounted on the left side of the sub-rack. There is a spare slot for an additional EOW unit to be mounted on the right side. The assembled EOW unit has the following dimensions (mm): 44Hx442Lx110D The EOW unit has the following electrical interfaces on the front panel:

14 Connections In this chapter are described the typologies and pinout of the connectors present on the front panel of the EOW unit. All the external connectors must be of the shielded type to comply with EMI/EMC regulations. Power supply connector In the following figure is shown the power supply connector, as seen on the front panel of the EOW unit. The corresponding pin function is shown in the table.

Connector type: Shielded SUB-D, 3 poles gold-plated. The central pin is not internally connected. LCT Connector (RS232) This interface is used to connect a local PC (LCT function) to do the initial setup during the installation phase. In the figure below is shown the connector and the pin functions. Note that pin 9, normally not used in LCT connections, is used for Card Fail alarm reporting, after configuration, and left permanently connected while the EOW unit is in service.

17.1 Main Window The following is the starting panel when the program is launched. SCREEN 1.0

Empty boxes will be filled with values selecting the “CONNECT” button and only if the board is connected and powered. “Comm” port value is set to 1 by default. If the Communication Port available is different from the one shown ,selection of the correct value is needed before beginning the link. Suppose to select Comm 5, SCREEN 1.1

The yellow led of the board blinks at high frequency. When the transfer is complete the board resets itself and the VB program order to the new firmware of the board to calculate the CRC of the boot section. If the CRC is correct (i.e.it is the same as in the “File” section) the last window appears SCREEN 5.6

Closing the window the main window is updated with the new firmware version written at “Current Version” label. SCREEN 5.7
