A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

1

Dear Creighton Students, Just over a year has passed since I was first elected as the President of the Creighton Students Union. I would first and foremost like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be your representative to the administrators, faculty, staff and trustees for the past year. I have even more to be thankful for with the opportunity to do it for a second term. This is the second edition of the Biannual Report, which was first released at the start of last semester in an effort to provide more transparency for the activities of the Creighton Students Union. This report serves as an initial window into CSU, but I would definitely encourage you to stop by the CSU Office (inside the Student Leadership & Involvement Center) to get the full picture of what we’re all about! In the past year I have seen a lot of growth in myself, and within my team that I work with every day, but I have also seen a substantial amount of growth in the student body as a whole. Last semester as a community we undoubtedly experienced a tremendous amount of loss, however through the darkness I was able to observe just how strong this student body truly is. This past semester showed me that our community is not something that could be found at any other place, and that we are special. Therefore, I am so grateful that you have once again selected me to be the voice of this student body which we all care about so much!

As you know, CSU is always working to improve the student experience, and this semester will be no different. We are currently working with the EDGE and the Registrar to address some student concerns regarding registration and advising. We will then be tackling concerns of our commuter and distance students to ensure that they feel there is a place for them on campus. Another goal for the semester, in line with the university wide Global Initiative Project, is to put a focus on diversity and inclusion of our growing international student population. These are just a few of our goals, but we are always looking for more ideas. In

2

an effort to meet all of the students where they are at, we will be launching a social media campaign, which will include student spotlights, a suggestion box, constant updates on the happenings within CSU, and of course prizes! I believe that CSU is in a position to have one of our most successful semesters in recent history. One of the attributes that I highlighted in my recent CSU campaign was that if reelected, there would be no learning curve for this position, and most importantly, no major transition period. This has already proved to be beneficial in the planning process for this semester, as Executive Vice President Zach Pierce and I already know our roles, how they have worked in the past, and where we can take them in the future. Our new team also includes Vice President for Programming, Jake Wiesenthal, a seasoned member of the Program Board ready to take on the new role, and Vice President for Finance, Joe Peterson, a new face to CSU with great ideas for improving our funding processes. This team has a tremendous amount of potential, and we are ready to hit the ground running. Be on the lookout for great things from CSU this semester!

Have a great semester, and as always, Go Jays! Kayman Nixon President, Creighton Students Union

ISSUES WE ADDRESSED 1

GRADUATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT REBATE Resolution 15-05C was sponsored by Graduate School representatives and requested that the annual rebate the Graduate School Government receives from CSU by increased from 82% to the standard 87%. As the GSG grows it’s membership and programming needs, the increased rebate will allow for more programs for graduate students. This resolution passed the Board on a vote of 35-0-1.

HARPER CENTER STUDY SPACE Resolution 15-06 was brought to attention by undergraduate business representatives and addressed the lack of study space currently available in the Harper Center for Heider College of Business Students. As the departments and resources in the Harper Center expand, there is less formal space available for studying, and 75% of Heider Students surveyed use the Harper Center as a study space. The resolution passed the Board on a vote of 35-0-1.

SPEAKER OF THE BOARD DUTIES With the Speaker of the Board in it’s 3rd year as an official role in CSU, the Executive Committee felt it was time to clarify the duties of the Speaker to ensure the position was benefitting the Board as much as possible. Resolution 15-08 changed CSU’s bylaws that better clarified the duties of the Speaker and created more connections with the Board and the Executive Vice President.

DoIT COMMITTEE UPDATE The Executive Team of CSU currently sits on the newly formed Information Technology Advisory Committee, which discusses different topics within DoIT and IT on Creighton’s campus. This year we worked closely with this committee in the areas of printing and mobile service. As a result, WiFi is constantly improving on campus, and work is being done to bring a new, improved, and completely accessible mobile app for everything Creighton. In addition, printing services on campus are being revamped, so stay tuned for some BIG changes coming from the University and CSU! If you have any questions regarding the Board of Representatives or legislation passed, please contact CSU Speaker of the Board Sarah Huddleston at [email protected]. Contact Zach Pierce at [email protected] for questions regarding University Committees.

REFLECTION FROM THE VICE PRESIDENTS

Zach Pierce – [email protected] Executive Vice President

Alex Kubicek – [email protected] Vice President for Finance

Mattie Smyth – [email protected] Vice President for Programming

As the position of the EVP and the stance of CSU on Creighton’s campus continues to expand, we are constantly looking for more partnership and joint efforts to participate in with various departments and entities on campus. Our work with DoIT has led to huge growth in connectivity on campus, and has led to the beginning stages on the creation of a Creighton mobile app. As the next year comes along, I hope to continue to find more areas of campus where students can be involved in the decision making and planning efforts of campus. If ever there is an issue on campus, let us know, we are here to help and have the resources to do just that! I am looking forward to an eventful Spring and productive summer.

This past semester has been exciting when it comes to all of the aid CSU has provided to many different student organizations around campus. We set a record for the most requests heard and money allocated to over 40 different student organizations. CSU is proud to aid as many student organizations as possible in their many endeavors around campus and around the world. We love to see your events around campus and know the integral part they play to the Creighton experience. For the future, we look to continue to make the funding process as easy as possible for each student organization. Always remember that CSU exists for each student and we will do our best to help you get to where you need to go.

Overall, the CSU Program Board made great strides during 2015. Although they were a very young, inexperienced group of individuals, their enthusiasm and passion to learn led them to huge success by the end of the year. We had a few hiccups in the Fall semester with cancelations however, the board was able to adapt and keep their momentum going. Over the past twelve months Program Board has dedicated countless hours to bringing a spectacular variety of fall and spring events. Each of the events that CSU Program Board sponsors is aimed at enhancing students’ overall college experience and providing lasting memories. Over the past year students have enjoyed movies, game shows, excursions, speakers, and comedic events, and I loved be apart of all of them. I am very excited to see what 2016 will bring for the new team and I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to serve the Creighton student body in this role.

BOARD OF REPS UPDATE

1

CAMPUS PLANNING Chair: Aditi Dinakar Last semester, the Campus Planning committee worked closely with Public Safety in regards to shuttle services and campus parking. Now, more information is available on parking options are well as new posters and signs highlighting available parking areas. They also looked at current space on campus to find more areas for student engagement and study space.

VISIBILITY AND MARKETING Chair: Sarah Huddleston The Visibility and Marketing committee held one outreach event semester, the newly coined Scoops and Skewers with CSU to replace Guava and Java. The committee continued to have representatives from the Board of Representatives at CSU Program Board’s Wednesdays After Class (WAC). The Board of Representatives received a multitude of positive suggestions and we look forward to continuing this form of visibility in the future. Looking forward, the Visibility and Marketing Committee wants to improve overall marketing for CSU, especially in regards to new students to ensure full participation.

INTERCAMPUS RELATIONS Chair: Lulu Alvarez This committee spent time this past semester discussing the co-ed floor legislation that IRHG has proposed. They hope to present legislation in the fall giving CSU support of IRHG’s resolution. They, too, worked with public safety, and as a

2

result shuttle services will be looked at more closely during the summer.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS Chair: Ty Medd This committee was new addition to the Board of Representatives this semester. They functioned as liaisons for the Board of Representatives and reached out to other Jesuit Universities to gage their opinions on different resolutions. The committee looked into class credits given at other universities as well as their sports marketing for students. In 2016, the Diversity, Outreach, and Inclusion committee will replace this committee.

SPEAKER OF THE BOARD UPDATE Speaker: Julia Neppel The Spring 2015 semester for the Board of Representatives focused on visibility and addressing student concern on campus. Our first resolution of the semester, Resolution 15-06, suggested the addition of more study space in the Harper Center. The Board of Representatives volunteered for CSU's Annual JayWalk helping to create a very successful event raising money for Jesuit Academy. Our most popular visibility event of the year was our "Scoops and Skewers" event, which was an evening event of appetizers and handing out maps regarding parking on campus to ease students concerns about the lack of parking available. I look forward to my next year in CSU as a College of Arts and Sciences Representative!
