FINGERLESS POCKET MITTS EP05 Inspired by the penny loafer, this fingerless mitt pattern in 2 adult sizes features an afterthought pocket. For the one on the go during the cooler months, the handy pockets can store your subway token, tissue, or any other small items to keep your hands free!

MATERIALS 1 skein of ESTELLE ALPACA MERINO FINE

55% merino wool, 25% nylon, 20% alpaca

Approx 100 g and 400 m per skein

Set of 5 double pointed needles 2.5 mm / US 1

Waste yarn in a contrasting colour and similar

GAUGE 36 sts and 52 rounds = 10 cm / 4” in stockinette stitch,

blocked.

parenthesis following the smallest size. Where

there is only one figure, it applies to both sizes.

GLOSSARY

Backward loop cast on

Hold needle in right hand:

1. Wrap the working yarn around your left thumb

from front to back.

2. Slip the needle tip under the loop on left

thumb.

3. Slide your thumb out of the loop, and pull the

new stitch tight on the needle.

Repeat steps 1-3 until the required number of

stitches have been cast on the right needle.

3 needle bind off 1. Place both needles so they are pointing the

same direction. 2. Using a third needle as right-hand needle, insert

point of right-hand needle through the first stitch of the piece in front and the first stitch of the piece in back, through the double thickness. Knit loosely together as if to one stitch. Repeat for next set of sts.

3. On right-hand needle, pass the first stitch over the last to bind off. Repeat steps 2-3 until all sts are bound off.

RIGHT AND LEFT MITT RIBBED CUFF Cast on 68 (76) sts, place marker to indicate beginning of round. Join being careful not to twist. Round 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of round. Repeat round 1 until rib measures 5 cm / 2". Total 26 rounds.

Place markers Next round: K26 (30), pm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, pm, k28 (32). KNITTING THE WRIST Next round: K26 (30), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k28 (32). Repeat last round 25 times more slipping all markers as they appear. SETTING UP THE GUSSET Round 27: K1, pm, k25 (29), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k27 (31), pm, k1, remove center marker, k1. The first and last stitches of the round are now in-between both markers that were placed. SETTING UP THE POCKET RIGHT MITT ONLY Round 28: Sm, k25 (29), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k4 (6), using waste yarn k19. Return the 19 sts back to the LH needle and with the working yarn, k19 sts again, k4 (6). LEFT MITT ONLY Round 28: Sm, k3 (5), using waste yarn k19. Return the 19 sts back to the LH needle and with the working yarn, k19 sts again, k3 (5), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k27 (31). THUMB GUSSET RIGHT AND LEFT MITT Round 1: Sm, M1, k to the next marker, M1, sm, k25 (29), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k27 (31). Round 2: Sm, k to the next marker, sm, k25 (29), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k27 (31). Repeat rounds 1 and 2, 10 (11) times more ending after round 2. There are now 22 (24) sts in-between the markers for the thumb. Next round: Remove marker, place thumb gusset sts onto waste yarn, remove the second marker. There are now 66 (74) sts total. Next round: Backward loop cast on 1 st, pm, backward loop cast on 1 st, join 68 (76) sts in the round.

Next round: K25 (29), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k27 (32). TOP OF MITT RIGHT AND LEFT MITT Next round: Sm, k26 (30), sm, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, sm, k27 (32). Repeat last round 19 times more. RIBBED EDGE Round 1: *K2, p2; rep from *to end of round. Repeat round 1 until rib measures 2.5 cm / 1". Cast off loosely in pattern. THUMB RIGHT AND LEFT MITT Return 22 (24) sts for thumb to needle. Join yarn and pick up 2 sts on the inside of thumb to help close the gap. 24 (26) sts total. Knit 6 rounds. Round 7: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of round. Repeat round 7, 6 times more. Cast off loosely in pattern. POCKET RIGHT AND LEFT MITT Wrong side facing, pick up the sts for the pocket opening, 19 sts on each needle. Remove waste yarn. Next round: Join working yarn and p19, pick up 2 sts, p19, pick up 2 sts, pm, join for working in the round. Total 42 sts. P30 rounds. 3-NEEDLE BIND OFF Hold pocket with the wrong side facing and 21 sts divided evenly on two needles. Work 3-needle bind off. FINISHING Block to finish, weave in ends.
