Both this Sunday and next (January 27 and February 3), Vision 2020 input forms will be available at all our worship services. If you did not participate in a small group, please complete one of these forms and return it to the church by February 10. I applaud the Coordinating Team for working to enable all of us to share what God is putting on our hearts, and I encourage all of you to complete a form. Later this spring we will hear from the Vision 2020 Coordinating Team as they share the full report. Their work is daunting, sorting and sifting through the 2,400 ideas that have been shared by people in the fifty-five small groups as well as those individuals that will submit forms over the next weeks. Please remember the Coordinating Team in your prayers, that God would lead them in discerning His vision for this part of the Body of Christ. Finally, our Session voted last night to renovate and update our sanctuary while also addressing some other needs. The men and women that have gone before us in this place have provided a wonderful worship space. It is time, however, that we update this area, re- placing the aging heating, air conditioning and electrical systems, adding a men’s restroom, making the facility more accessible for people with mobility challenges, adding a covered drop off, and enhancing the chancel area. Thankfully, with the addition of the Jubilee Wor- ship Service, we do not need to add seating to the sanctuary. After over fifty years of use, it is time to replace the (original) boilers and otherwise update this space for the twenty-first century. The January 27 sermon will include a snapshot of some of the Vision 2020 ideas that we will test during Lent, while the February 3 sermon will share details related to the updating the sanctuary. Our Lord is at work in the world and in the Eastminster Church! Let us lean forward into the future to which He is calling us. Brad

Dear Friends,

This is an exciting time in the life of Eastminster church. Over the next several months we will be stepping forward in faith on several fronts. First, during the season of Lent we will undertake a church-wide study of the Gospel of John. This Lenten study will include a “sneak a peak” preview of a few of the ideas that have been shared during the Vision 2020 process.

Speaking of Vision 2020, the Coordinating Team would like those of you that did not participate in the small groups to provide input.

It is time, however, that we update this area, re-placing the aging heating, air conditioning and electrical systems, adding a men’s restroom, making the facility more accessible for people with mobility challenges, adding a covered drop off, and enhancing the chancel area. Thankfully, with the addition of the Jubilee Wor-ship Service, we do not need to add seating to the sanctuary. After over fifty years of use, it is time to replace the (original) boilers and otherwise update this space for the twenty-first century.

Eastminster Presbyterian Church 65th Anniversary

Eastminster will celebrate its 65th anniversary on Sun-day, February 3. In appreciation for the ministry of the church and all who have helped shape the church, we

will share a few snippets of our past history.

Peanut Butter Sunday

For years Eastminster has been a strong contributor to the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Co-lumbia. As an example, in December 1993 our church collected 710 pounds of food to support the food bank’s Christian distributions to needy families. In August 1994 our church began a program of collecting peanut butter once a month as a contribution to Harvest Hope. Peanut butter is high in protein and other nutrients, and, although relatively high in fat, it is “good” (monounsaturated) fat. Since its inception, Eastminster has contributed tons of peanut butter to Harvest Hope, with one Sunday School class composed of some of our more senior members leading the way with collecting peanut butter as a major project.

2012 Habitat House DedicationThe Habitat House that Eastminster and friends built is ready to be dedicated! Please join

us at the house (1033 Crane Church Road, Columbia 29203) on Sunday, January 27 at 2 p.m. for the dedication. All are welcome, especially anyone who worked on the site or provided lunches. Directions to the site: From I-20 take exit 70, US 321 North, toward Winnsboro. After 1 ½ miles, turn left at the Fire Station onto Crane Church Road. The house will be on the right approximately half mile down the road.

Flowers for SanctuaryThe 2013 Flower Calendar is in the narthex. Contact Carol Anderson at jander7@bell-

south.net if you wish to place flowers in honor or in memory of someone. Also, if you have a standing memorial, please contact Carol to confirm that you still wish to reserve a date.

Not Employed or Under-EmployedCrossroads Career Network offers programs and opportunities for job seekers, career explor-

ers, employers and regular church attendees to get involved. We meet most Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. in the Christian Life Center, room C- 265. Contact Jim Hatchell for more information: [email protected].

Spring RHINO trip to New OrleansMarch 11 - 16, 2013

Eastminster will sponsor a Habitat build in New Orleans in coordination with St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. If you’ve never been on one of these trips, you might consider this a pilgrimage as well as a Christian out-reach project. We stay in a nice hotel, enjoy good Creole

cuisine, and assist a needy family in building the first home they will ever own. The weather is good in New Orleans this time of year, and the effort is something you will never forget. Contact Mark Rosenberg at [email protected] for more info or to sign up.

Peanut Butter Sunday, January 27Remember to pick-up your jar(s) of peanut butter to bring with you to church on the 27th.

We have a challenge this year, as we try to top the 4,970 pounds we donated in 2012!

Parents of Teens Class Presentation Open to AllThe Parents of Teens class welcomes Jack Claypoole as the January 27 Sunday

School class speaker, to discuss how parents can help prepare their youth to think before they act, especially as these deci-sions relate to risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use. The presentation is open to all (non-members welcome) and will begin at 10:10 a.m. in the CLC game room area.

Jack, a Midlands native, was formerly in Washington, D.C., with the Drug Free Communities program at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, first as administrator and then as associate deputy director (2006-12). Previously, he was CEO of the Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. A USC graduate, he returned to Columbia in July to become executive director of the Carolina Alumni Association.

Did you know . . . … Eastminster supports missions for all ages. We financially assist

the Conference Center at Montreat. We support the College Min-istry at USC and we give residential aid to the Presbyterian Home. Laura Long

Writers and Photographers Wanted!Would you like to write a brief devotion or reflection based on a Scripture

reading from the Gospel of John? In addition to emailing the Lenten Scripture readings as we have the past several years, we also want to provide a brief (roughly

100 words) devotion to accompany each reading. If you will consider writing a de-votion, please contact Thelma Carter ([email protected]), and she will provide you the reading chart so you can pick a passage to use for your devotion.

Do you enjoy photography? If so, please consider sharing your talent with the church family. Each Sunday

during Lent, February 17-March 31, we’d like to have a photograph on the Wor-ship Bulletin that will match the sermon. During these seven Sundays, we will walk through the Gospel of John, looking at the various “I am” sayings of Jesus. The “I Am” sayings we will be looking at (and thus should be the jumping off point for the photo) are:

-“I am the Way, Truth and Life” John 14:6-“I am the Vine” John 15:5-“I am the Gate” John 10:1-5-“I am the Good Shepherd” John 10:1-5-“I am the Bread of Life” John 6:35-“I am the Light of the World” John 8:12-“I am the Resurrection” John 11:25If you are interested in submitting a photograph, please contact Thelma Carter

([email protected]) at the church. Photos will need to be high quality and vertical in format.

Table BlessingsCookbooks are available for all, no pre-order needed! These book are available

for purchase in the parlor on Sunday mornings and make great gifts for birthday, graduation, shower, etc. If you are unable to pick one up on Sunday, contact [email protected] to find out how you may purchase one.

John Lenten Study BooksWe have ordered “John for Everyone” by N.T. Wright to use with our Lenten

study of the Gospel of John. The books should arrive by the end of January. The two-volume set is $20 and will be available in Julie’s office.
