It can never be said that things stand still at EPFL! Scientific research has always benefited from a cer-tain degree of flux: labs move, students and postdocs come and go, new ideas germinate, and the seeds

of discovery are carried far to thrive in new ecosystems.

Teaching is also evolving to match changes in student mobility and the need for multi-disciplinary curri-cula. EPFL’s newly introduced MOOCs, combined with our international networks such as RESCIF and

Eurotech, mean that global collaboration is now possible for teaching as well as research. In addition, I hope you will take full advantage of the newly formed Teaching Support Center (CAPE) that offers

a range of tools and assistance for teaching staff.

It’s not just about casting the net wider though; we are reinforcing our strengths through strategic deve-lopment in Europe with the Human Brain Project and in Switzerland, including EPFL Valais-Wallis,

the Fribourg Smart Living Lab and the Wyss Institute in Geneva, in addition to the creation of new research centers on campus centered on Risk Analysis and Governance (CRAG) and Limnology.

Within the VPAA, we hope to support you in all aspects of your academic life, and this booklet outlines the structures in place and some of the recent changes for those of you familiar with us. In particu-

lar I would like to welcome William Pralong to the team, in charge of Accreditation and Quality Assurance. We have now also brought all services for research staff together into the newly created

Research Office, and we hope this will improve the offering and allow you to focus on your main scientific activities.

Lastly, my thanks to you for your continued commitment to the quality of our school’s research and tea-ching and we remain at your disposal for any questions or suggestions.

Philippe Gillet Vice President for Academic Affairs and President ad interim
