LIVING OUR FAITH

To the Faithful of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, I know I speak for every person in the Archdiocese of St. Louis when I say how deeply saddened I am by the death and massive devastation our brothers and sisters in the South are experiencing in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. It is dif-ficult to comprehend how something so terrible can happen on such a scale and it is at times like these we turn in faith and ask the Lord to carry those who are suffering and who have lost so much. To help the suffering who survived this disaster, I am asking our nearly 200 parishes in 11 counties to have a second col-lection at all Masses this coming weekend September 9th and 10th. Funds raised will go directly to Catholic relief efforts via Catholic Charities St. Louis. I will offer a Mass for those who died in this tragedy, as well as their families and friends who mourn their loss. I ask you to please join your prayer to mine for our neighbors who must now rebuild their lives. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Revered Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

Thank you to everyone who is contributing to setting up the 10:30 am coffee hour. It has really added an element of fel-lowship to our Sunday experience. I love hanging out and getting to know everyone better after Mass. For you 8 am mass-goers, never fear, because Donut Sundays will be starting in November! The Piano Fundraiser is off to a great start. In 1 week we raised $1,500 toward our goal of $6,000. If you can contribute, we have special envelopes on the tables in the vestibule and at the side doors. I thank you for your generosity and I know that Elizabeth and the choir thanks you! Interested in becoming Catholic? Let me know, we can talk. RCIA is starting soon. Children's Choir is starting this Tue. Meet in Church at 6:30 pm for Mass and then Choir practice until 7:45 pm. 18 years to as young as they want to learn to sing... Mass Explanations - Vatican II Quotes Vatican II is the most recent teaching of the Church on liturgical renewal and our path forward as the Body of Christ in our worship. It has lots of interesting quotes in it about the Mass that I thought I might share because of how helpful they are. If you want to read more, I recommend reading the whole document, calledSacrosanctum Concilium. On each person's participation in Mass: “Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that fully conscious, and active participation in li-turgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. Such participation by the Christian people as "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people (1 Pet. 2:9; cf. 2:4-5), is their right and duty by reason of their baptism.” “To promote active participation, the people should be encouraged to take part by means of acclamations, responses, psalmody, antiphons, and songs, as well as by actions, gestures, and bodily attitudes. And at the proper times all should observe a reverent silence.” About using English and Latin: “In Masses which are celebrated with the people, a suitable place may be allotted to their mother tongue. This is to apply in the first place to the readings and "the common prayer,"...Nevertheless steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them.” About using the organ: “In the Latin Church the pipe organ is to be held in high esteem, for it is the traditional musical instrument which adds a wonderful splendor to the Church's ceremonies and powerfully lifts up man's mind to God and to higher things.” On singing chant: “The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.” How Mass is the heart of the Body of Christ: “Liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows.”

Though we will not be holding a second collection, we ask you instead to simply include your donations for the victims of Hurricane Harvey in the envelopes marked “Hurricane Harvey” or simply drop your

check in the collection basket with a note in the memo section for “Hurricane Harvey”.
