"They departed for their country by another way." Things
were different now. An encounter with the baby Jesus
changed the Magi. Before finding the child, they had
made a secret alliance with a worldly king, Herod. But
after seeing this infant resting in the arms of Mary, their
allegiance shifted. Now they became servants of the little
Lord Jesus. They had a kind of conversion through their
encounter with Christ, and they knew that they could no
longer serve the whims of a wicked ruler.
We call this Sunday "Epiphany" because that's
what the three wise men had: an epiphany, a moment of
realizing the truth about God. In this moment these three
men--kings that they were--"prostrated themselves and
did homage" to the King of Kings. Then they went home
by a different route, undoubtedly as different men. Now,
their own authority as worldly leaders took on a new
character. Now, they were men who served a power
greater than themselves. As it was prophesied in the Old
Testament reading from Isaiah, even kings would walk by
the "shining radiance" of the Lord.
Let us ask ourselves today how the Epiphany of
the Lord can redirect us. What worldly allegiances have
we made that need to be changed? Are we servants of
our neighbors' good opinion or of the power of money?
Are we secretly aligned with popularity or prestige? No
matter what "rules" our hearts, we are invited to change
our direction. We are invited to encounter the little Lord
Jesus and offer ourselves to his gentle and loving guid-
ance. After all, his is a kingship of concern for us. As to-
day's psalm says, this King "shall rescue the poor when
he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to
help him."
I would like to thank all those parishioners who volun-
teered and made all of our holy days possible during this
Christmastide, especially the choir, the children’s choir,
our Joyful Praise ministry and our young adult choir. I
also want to thank all the little elves who made the
church look so beautiful and their ingenuity in redesign-
ing things to work with the changes in the sanctuary. I
am grateful to our deacons, all the altar servers, the min-
isters of Holy Communion, the lectors and the ushers
who participated in the Masses. It really added to the
festivities and prayerfulness of all the liturgies. I am
looking forward to this again next year.
Father Vic and I thank the many people who have sent us
good wishes and prayers for Christmas and the New
Year. As you know this year is dedicated to the conse-
crated life. In a special way we will be praying especially
for the Sisters of the Resurrection and for vocations from
our own parish to help them grow. We also have one
seminarian in our parish and I ask your prayers for his
formation.
This Lent, we will be having a Parish Mission conducted
by Msgr. John Farley. He was the Spiritual Director of St.
Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, NY and currently is a
chaplain at Calvary Hospital. Also, the Missionaries of
the Poor are scheduled to perform a play in our parish
this spring. There will be more on this as the details un-
fold.
Being a scientist, I have a special devotion to the three
Magi. These scientists embarked on a quest for the
Truth with weak tools for their journey. The moving star
peaked their curiosity and they embarked on a noble
search for what it meant. As they leave the meeting with
the corrupt Herod, the star's behavior changes. It be-
comes a fixed point. They are now going to encounter
Divine Truth. While the Magi give physical gifts to Jesus,
Jesus is preparing to give them spiritual gifts for their
souls. As the Magi return, they no longer retrace their
steps by a star, but by God's will directed through an an-
gel. They, like Mary and Joseph, follow the message of
God's angel and go by another route free and enlight-
ened by the Truth.
Let us pray that our life’s journey is enriched by our quest
for the truth by reading the Bible and looking into the
Catechism of the Catholic Church for its deeper meaning.
