JANUARY 6, 2019 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Epiphany Proclamation NOTES FROM DR. ROBERT WOLF– Director of Music

In the midst of the Christmas Season celebrations, filled with the singing of joyous and pro-found Christmas Carols, we encounter the Epiphany. At our liturgies today we experi-ence an ancient practice of the Holy Church: the sung Procla-mation of the Date of Easter. This is proclaimed by a Cantor at each Epiphany Mass follow-ing the Gospel.

Here is what the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops writes about Proclamation:

"The proclamation of the date of Easter and the other moveable feasts on Epiphany dates from a time when calendars were not readily available. It was necessary to make known the date of Easter in advance, since many celebrations of the liturgical year depend on its date. The number of Sundays that follow Epiphany, the date of Ash Wednesday, and the number of Sundays that follow Pentecost are all computed in relation to Easter.

Although calendars now give the date of Easter and the other feasts in the liturgical year for many years in advance, the Epiphany proclamation still has value. It is a reminder of the centrality of the resur-rection of the Lord in the liturgical year and the importance of the great mysteries of faith which are celebrated each year.

Each year the proper dates for Ash Wednesday, East-er, Ascension, Pentecost, the most holy Body and Blood of Christ, and the First Sunday of Advent must

be inserted into the text. Those dates are found in the table which is included with the introductory documents of the Roman Missal...

On the Epiphany of the Lord, after the singing of the Gospel, a Deacon or cantor, in keeping with an ancient practice of Holy Church, announces from the ambo the moveable feasts of the current year"

ANNOUNCEMENT OF EASTER AND THE MOVEABLE FEASTS FOR THE YEAR 2019:

Know, dear brothers and sisters, that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God's mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the sixth day of March will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the twenty-first day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the second day of June will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the ninth day of June, the feast of Pentecost. On the twenty-third of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the first day of December, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. May God Bless Your New Year With All Good!

Traditional Latin Mass The Extraordinary Form of the Mass is offered at Old St. Patrick on the second Sunday of each month at 12:30pm. The next Mass is being offered by Fr. Joe Campbell on Sunday Jan. 13th. Fr. Joe is an Ann Arbor native who was just ordained this past June for our diocese. Come experience the

beauty of the “Mass of the ages” celebrated on the high altar at our parish. This beautiful form of the Mass, celebrated in Latin, with chant and silence, can help one grow deeper in appreciating the sacred nature of the Eucharist and grow in the Faith.

Priestly House Blessing

Epiphany marks the occasion of a time-honored Christian tradition of

“chalking the doors.” This can be done either by the parish priest or the head

of the house. This week Father Tom would like to bless as many homes of

parishioners as possible and mark them with chalk for the New Year. If you

are interested in having Father visit your home and give the Epiphany Blessing, leave your name, phone

number, and address on the sign up sheet in the back of the church, or email [email protected].

You will be contacted by phone to arrange the visit. The Roman Ritual blessing takes about 15 minutes,

after which Father marks the door of your home with chalk, and moves on to the next house. If you are

not able to have father come over, we have blessed chalk available in the church, take a piece home and

say the following prayer, use the blessed chalk to mark the main entrance of your home:

20 C + M + B 19

The letters have two meanings. First, they represent the initials of the three Magi: Caspar, Malchior,

and Balthazar — who came to visit Jesus with gifts. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus Mansionem Benedicat: “May Christ bless this house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “20” at

the beginning and the “19” at the end mark the year. Taken together, this inscription is performed as

a request for Christ to bless the home so marked and stay with those who dwell therein throughout the

entire year.

Leader: Be enlightened, be enlightened, O Jerusalem, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord

is risen upon thee—Jesus Christ born of the Virgin Mary.

All: And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light and kings in the splendor of thy rising, and the glory of the

Lord has risen upon thee.

Leader: Let us pray.

Bless, O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory,

humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the

Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein.

Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen. ~From the Roman Ritual

On Monday, Jan 21st, the day before the anniversary of the Supreme court decision legalizing the taking of lives, place a lit candle on your porch around dusk and let it burn into the night to serve as a silent witness and memorial to over 58 million babies lives lost to and the millions of lives changed by abortion. The Knights of Columbus will be offering candles this weekend and next weekend, Jan 12-13 here at Old St. Patrick Church after all Masses.
