Episcopal iPad Handbook Vision The Episcopal technology department is dedicated to maximizing our students’ futures through the development and mastery of 21 st Century Skills. We strive to empower students to take responsibility for their education, ensuring that they will become lifelong learners.  The Middle School iPad program will offer our students an expanded set of learning opportunities for both collaborative and self-directed learning. With an iPad available to them at all times, students will:

● Possess an integral learning tool to gain the 21 st century skills required to excel and compete globally ● Be empowered by and engaged with the curriculum ● Increase their knowledge and understanding of technology   ● Become constructors and designers of information and ideas

 1. iPAD HANDOUT AND RETURNS

Each student will be issued an iPad for school related activities. Before receiving the iPad students and parents must read and agree to the following policies, ensuring that there is a clear understanding of responsibilities associated with the iPad.  The Episcopal Responsible Use Policy (RUP). A signature on the School’s Enrollment Contract indicates that the signed party has read the terms and conditions of use, understands their significance, and agrees to abide by the terms of the RUP. Students and parents must also sign and follow the rules stated in the iPad handbook.

Individual school iPads and accessories must be returned to the Help Desk at the end of each school year. Students who withdraw, are suspended or expelled, or terminate enrollment for any other reason must return their school iPad and accessories in good condition on the date of termination.  If a student fails to return the iPad at the end of the school year or upon termination of enrollment, the school will withhold grades and transcripts until the property is returned. If the iPad is not returned, the student’s family must pay the full replacement cost of the iPad.

2. TAKING CARE OF THE iPAD  Students are responsible for the general care of the iPad they have been issued by the school. iPads that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the Help Desk office for an evaluation of the equipment.  2.1 General Precautions

● The iPad is school property, and all users will follow the Responsible Use Policy for technology.  ● Only use a clean, dry, soft cloth to clean the screen; no cleansers of any type, not even water, are

appropriate. Visit the Help Desk if you need help cleaning your iPad properly. ● Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the iPad to prevent damage.  ● iPads must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels.  ● iPads must never be left in an unlocked locker, a car, or any unsupervised area.  ● Students are responsible for keeping their iPad’s battery fully charged for school each day.  ● Do not use “skins” to “personalize” the school iPad.

Page 2: Episcopal iPad Handbook · 2019. 5. 12. · Episcopal iPad Handbook Vision The Episcopal technology department is dedicated to maximizing our students’ futures through the development

● Do not place anything on the iPad that could put pressure on the screen or the back. ● iPads must not be exposed to extreme temperatures, fire, or ultraviolet light. ● iPads must not be used in busy places such as gyms and playgrounds. ● Any unattended iPad on campus will be taken to the Middle School Office and consequences will

be issued. Do not leave your iPad on the ground outside any classroom. ● Do not take iPads near pools or tubs. ● The iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment.  ● Do not take the iPad outside in inclement weather. ● If the iPad is damaged, the student must immediately report the problem to the Help Desk.

 2.2 Carrying iPads

● The protective case provided with iPads has sufficient padding to protect the iPad from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the device within the school.

● Do not remove the iPad from the protective case, not even to clean it.

3. USING THE iPad AT SCHOOL  iPads are intended for use at school each day. Students are responsible for bringing their iPads fully charged to school each day, unless specifically instructed not to do so by their teacher. Any stored files may be erased if a factory reset is necessary; therefore it is the responsibility of the student to backup their own work.  3.1 iPad Left at Home  Students who leave their iPads at home will face disciplinary consequences. iPads are to be brought to school every day.  3.2 iPad Undergoing Repair  Loaner iPads may be issued to students when they leave their iPads for repair.   3.3 Charging the iPad’s Battery  iPads must be brought to school each day in a fully-charged condition. Students need to charge their iPads each evening by plugging them into an electrical wall outlet only. They must not charge the iPads from a computer port. Students are required to bring the iPad charger to school each day. All iPads must be returned with a charger; students who lose their chargers must purchase a replacement from the Apple Store.   3.4 Acceptable Use

● The presence of inappropriate images or language on the device may result in disciplinary action. ● Acceptable Use is governed by the schools Responsible Use Policy , this Handbook, and the Episcopal Honor

Code. Privacy : Users should not have an expectation of privacy or confidentiality for their electronic communications or files, and the school reserves the right to examine all data. All communications may be disclosed without prior consent.

● Teachers have the right and ability to monitor you in class iPad usage via Apple Classroom.

3.5 Sound, Music, Games, or Programs

● Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. Students are responsible for providing their own earbuds or headsets.

● All software/Apps must be school-provided. Data Storage will be through school email or school-approved storage apps on the iPad.

● Students are not allowed to use the iPad for personal entertainment. This includes streaming video, downloading, playing music, or playing games that are not part of class curriculum. Violating these terms will result in disciplinary action.

3.6 Home Internet Access  Students are allowed to set up wireless networks on their iPads. This will assist them with iPad use while at home. However, the Episcopal Responsible Use Policy must be followed while using a school owned device at home.

4. MANAGING FILES & SAVING WORK

4.1 Saving & Submitting work with the iPad  There are several ways to manage files on the iPad:

● Learning Management Systems: Teachers may have students submit work from the iPad to a learning management system such as Canvas. Usernames are created and accessible by the Helpdesk. Passwords are student created and can be reset by the student or administrators.

● Cloud-Based Services : Students have the option save to the cloud. The school provides access to a cloud based drive. Usernames and passwords are created and accessible by the Helpdesk.

● Email : Most iPad productivity apps support the ability to open and email documents, presentations, spreadsheets, PDF’s, images, or other common file types. Students and teachers can exchange course-related files through their school-supplied email accounts. We recommend this type of submission of work as a last resort. We recommend submitting your work via the LMS or Cloud based service first before using email.

● iCloud Backup : Students should connect their iPads to their home WiFi each night in order to complete an iCloud backup.

● Student Homework: When a student experiences a problem with his/her iPad at home, he/she still is responsible for submitting assigned work. The student and his/her parent need to email or call the teacher's Episcopal voice mailbox in reference to the problem. The student also is responsible for visiting the Helpdesk the next morning to gain assistance with the iPad problem.

4.2 Network Connectivity  Episcopal makes no guarantee that the school network will be up and running 100% of the time. In the rare case that the network is down, the school will not be responsible for lost or missing data.

5. SOFTWARE ON IPADS

5.1 Originally Installed Software  All software/apps originally installed by Episcopal must remain on the iPad in usable condition and must be easily accessible at all times. From time to time, the school may add apps for use in a particular course. The licenses for this software require that the software be deleted from iPads at the conclusion of the course. Periodic checks of iPads will be made to ensure that students have not removed required apps or changed installed software including changes to the iOS.    5.2 Additional Software  The Episcopal Help Desk will manage the applications & books on all student iPads. All apps will be distributed through a secure Mobile Device Management system that will act as a bridge between the iPads and the Apple App Store. Students are not permitted to connect their iPads to any computers and/or synchronize their iPads to any personal iTunes accounts for any purpose.  5.3 Circumvention of Managed Settings  All student iPads are provisioned by the technology department for the purposes of initializing and managing all iPads in a secure and organized fashion. Any attempts by students to circumvent any management settings (including removal of profiles) through software restoration, deletion, or jail-breaking will result in the confiscation of the iPad and disciplinary action.  5.4 Inspection  Students may be selected at random to provide their iPad for inspection.  5.5 Procedure for re-loading software  If technical difficulties occur or illegal software (non-Episcopal installed apps) is discovered, the iPad will be restored from backup. The school does not accept responsibility for the loss of any software or documents deleted due to a re-format and re-image. In addition, this may result in confiscation of the iPad with usage allowed only during the school day.   5.6 Software Upgrades  Upgrade versions of licensed software/apps are available from time to time. Students should keep their iPad operating system and apps up to date unless specifically advised not to by the Technology team. Updates will be centrally managed the Help Desk, and students are responsible for installing the updates in a timely manner so that class time is not interrupted.

 6. ACCEPTABLE USE

The use of Episcopal’s technology resources is a privilege, not a right. The privilege of using the technology resources provided by the School is not transferable or extendible by students to people or groups outside the School and terminates when a student is no longer enrolled in Episcopal. This policy is provided to make all users aware of the responsibilities associated with efficient, ethical, and lawful use of technology resources. If a person violates any of
