Cool roofs are distinguished among energy conservation measures because of the many environmental benefits they can provide. This is attributed to the fact that they combat the urban heat island effect

The urban heat island effect is a phenomenon that is characterized by a measured increase in the ambient air temperature in cities over their surrounding rural areas. This is due to roofs and other non-reflective surfaces that absorb and trap solar radiation — or heat

The excess trapped heat is gradually released to the ambient air throughout the day, evening and nighttime hours, warming up the urban core round the clock. The effect results in an environmentally negative and spiraling impact, including:

reflectance and thermal emittance

A cool roof minimizes the solar heat gain of a building by first reflecting incoming radiation and then by quickly re-emitting the remaining absorbed portion

As a result, the cool roof stays cooler than a traditional roof of similar construction

To be effective any cool roof coating must first act as a barrier to prevent chemicals and moisture from reaching the roof surface

In general, the more permeable a coating is to the passage of moisture as is typical of many water-reducible coatings, the greater its affinity for water and the greater the increase in transmission when tested in and exposed to high humidities …ASTM D 1653

Performance characteristics of coatings can be evaluated by laboratory

protocol

Specifically ASTMD 1653 for Permeability, ASTM D 714 for blistering and ASTM D 4214 for degradation or chalking

ASTM D 714:Resistance to chemical or water penetration. Ratings are 1-10 with10 representing no visible signs of blistering which is the highest/best rating

ASTM D 659 with the standard having four ratings: No. 2 (severe chalking), No. 4 (moderate to severe chalking), No. 6 (moderate chalking), and No. 8 (light chalking).

PROCESS RELIES ON SOLVENT OR WATER EVAPORATION

VOC’S ARE HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND ARE ALSO DETRIMENTAL TO THE COATING’S PERFORMANCE.

THESE COATINGS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ALLOW THE SOLVENTS OR WATER TO FULLY EVAPORATE RESULTING IN BLISTERS,VOIDS, PINHOLES OR SOFT SPOTS IN THE COATING
