EPS Projects 2011-2012:

Company/Organisation Project

VDL Enabling Technologies GroupVDL ETG Eindhoven operates in the business of system integration of mechatronics(sub) systems and modules for OEMs in the high-tech capital equipment industry and in the area of production mechanisation.

www.vdlgroep.com

VDL ETG Eindhoven assembles a mechatronic system, the wafer handler in move rates between 2 and 8 a week. The assembly process was designed eight years ago (also based upon total productive maintenance, one piece flow and (pre) lean techniques. The wafer handler system has changed significantly (engineering changes) during these years. The current assembly process does not meet the requirements from market, customer and management team. The assembly process should be optimized using all relevant lean pillars. Objective is to reduce process-time from 180 hours to 90-126 hours.

The group made an analysis of the assembly process and proposed a different work flow and assembly lay-out, that could reduce lead-time according to objectives and reduce waste.

Company/Organisation Project

IHC Merwede, DordrechtIHC Merwede is focused on the continuous development of design and construction activities for the specialist maritime sector. It is the global market leader for efficient dredging and mining vessels and equipment, and a reliable supplier of custom-built ships and supplies for the offshore construction.

www.ihcmerwede.com

The assignment for the EPS project within IHC Merwedeincludes the analysis of the supply chain of one of their Beaver Cutter Suction Dredgers. The analysis should include an overview of the different companies in the supply chain, their view on sustainability and expectations they have from their suppliers and clients. The analysis should lead to a proposal of sustainable purchase guidelines for IHC Beaver Dredgers.

The group made an analysis of the present CSR strategy of the company and compared its procurement guidelines with that strategy and ISO 26000. Some suppliers were interviewed and an advise was given on adapting the procurement guidelines.

Process analysis of bottling line. Objectives: energy and resources loss reduction. Part of overall Heineken program and commitment to reduce energy and loss over period of 10 years.Final goal of this research project is to identify the optimal process parameters for a packaging line with the lowest energy consumption, while maintaining similar product quality. The group will use the Energy Reduction Route as TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) tool.

The group made an analysis of a bottling line and compared water and energy consumption with other lines. Next they came up with suggestions and proposals to reduce this consumption.

Make proto-type voice-coil actuator. Lorentz actuators, or voice-coil actuators require a different approach in drive and control with regard to common rotation/iron core actuators. Based on market research and practical approach/study in a setup of Nyce4000 with modified drive and actuator (e.g. image stabilization in a lens, floating isolated table (on loudspeaker), high resolution short stroke stage build upon a linear stage, etc.).

The group investigated the market for voice coil actuators and the specific requirements in terms of drivers, came up with a design for a driver setup and advised the company on follow-up actions.

Company/Organisation Project

Ensartech, St. OedenrodeEnsartech has the core competence of mastering high temperature processes in which highly polluted waste streams are converted in various types of energy and simultaneous mastering clean slag production.

Ensartech website

The project comprises an inventory of the available renewable technologies currently available, to be implemented in the mentioned product markets. For each technology the relevant technical and economical parameters will be derived to support the decision making process in selecting the projects to be funded. Ideally this results in a handsome tool.

The group did research on business opportunities in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Belgium based on Ensartech's technology and top industrial players within the chemical field and came up with specific location propositions for future plants.
