(VCP) is a project in our faculty. As a start, we decided to increase the awareness of peoplein villages against Avian Flu.Through our awareness campaign, people did not respond to us at first but after some time, they began to listen to our advice to slaughter the chickens they have at home, in order toprevent possible infections. Then, we started to visitpeople and check personally if they still have anybirds at home. We didnt forget to put on our labcoats, gloves and masks as a means of protection. Wewere shocked when we saw that some people threwthe dead infected birds on the streets and cats andother street animals gathered to have theirinfected meals! It was a good experience, and wewere happy that by the end of the campaign, most ofthe people responded to our advice and got rid ofthe birds they used to have, of course after theyknew the dangerous consequences they may face! So, I have brought you some ways ofprotection against Avian Flu, try to make use of them!

ProtectionYou must not be in contact with birds because humans catch the disease through close con-tact with live infected birds. Birds excrete the virus in their feces, which dry and becomepulverized, and are then inhaled. If you want to eat chicken it is safe but cook it till 70C and if you want eggs boil them tillthe same temperature and leave it for 10 min in boiled water.Wash your hand with water and soap.Take fruits especially citrus fruits to increase your immunity.Generally, the most important methods for protection not only for bird flu but also againstany infection are to use hot water, good ventilation so avoid closed places, hygiene also hasan a role in it, avoiding contacts, keep your hands away from the face.

    Bird flu in Egypt

Following the WHO precautions, the Egyptian government slaughtered 800 millions diseasedbirds, prevented people from raising the birds indoors and transferring them among the

governorates.Over the last few days, three people were infected with H1N5 virus. We hope the numberwont increase!

Being a pharmacist, you must have..!!! It is a recent approach inobtained from the leaves of the herb, the field of sugar alternatives

a perennial shrub of family, ) rebaudianum Eupatorium(rebaudianaSteviaAsteraceae that grows up to 1 m tall and has leaves 2-3 cm long , native tothe northern regions of South America. It has now been growncommercially in Brazil , Paraguay , Uruguay ,

Central America , the United States , Thailand and China. It was Antonio Bertoni who first discovered stevia in 1887 .

The leaves contain several glycosides, which taste sweet, but do not provide calories.

The major glycoside is called stevioside . To date, the FDA still refuses to allow stevia to be sold inthe U.S. but the recently-enacted Dietary Supplement

Health and Education Act of 1994 may prevent the FDAfrom treating stevia and other natural herbs as "food additives." .

The largest user remains Japan which began cultivating stevia plants inhothouses in 1954. When the Japanese government banned certainartificial sweeteners due to health concerns in the late sixties, the use ofstevia as a natural alternative increased dramatically.

Stevioside has also been approved as a food additive in South Korea and is

widely available in China, Taiwan and Malaysia. In China, teas are made fromthe stevia leaves which are recommended " for increasing the appetite, as adigestant for losing weight, for keeping young and as a sweet tasting low-caloric tea." In Paraguay and Brazil, stevia is widely tauted as a remedy fordiabetes, although current scientific evidence does not adequately supportthis claim. It is also used extensively in black teas and herbal teas as wellas other food applications. The main preparation method for stevia leavesis infusion or dry powder extract, and it has also proved to haveantinflamatory and antimicrobial properties, especially in treatment ofcandida infections and cleaning wounds.
