Introduction to Epson PrintCertification

Epson PrintCertification is integrated into ColorBurst and SpectralVision Pro to certify your system and individual prints. PrintCertification targets can be printed from ColorBurst and measured using your spectrophotometer and SpectralVision Pro to certify that your printer is performing within an accept-able range. If you print a PrintCertification target with a print job, the individual print can also be mea-sured and certified. A PrintCertification label can be printed to affix to each certified print.

nOTE All phases of PrintCertification must be performed with the same spectropho-tometer. A UV-filtered device is required—you will need a UV-filtered device to relinearize because all ColorBurst profiles were created with a UV-filtered spectrophotometer.

The following label printers can be used to print PrintCertification labels:

dyMO LabelWriter 400 series LabelWriter 300 series

label Printer Setup

Before printing PrintCertification labels to the DYMO LabelWriter you will need to do the following:

Create a PrintCertification Reference

Before you can certify your system or individual prints, you must create a PrintCertification Reference. This reference stores information and measurements for your system that can be used for comparison at a later date. When this reference is used to certify your system, you are certifying that your latest prints closely match the original prints made when you created your reference file.

IMPORTanT You must make sure that your system is printing at optimal levels before creating a PrintCertification Reference file. Use your printer’s front panel to do a nozzle check, and clean the print heads if necessary. You may also want to do a test print to make sure you are satisfied with your output before creating the reference.

1. Create the initial environmentThis environment will be used as the base environment for the PrintCertification Reference.

a. Load an existing environment from the Environment menu in the ColorBurst Job Manager window.

b. Select Environment menu > Save As. Give your environment a unique name.

c. Relinearize the environment. For a relinearization tutorial, see the SpectralVision Pro documentation, found in the ColorBurst folder.

d. Assign your Input Profiles and change Printer Settings to suit your workflow, as necessary. For more details on changing these settings please refer to the ColorBurst Quick Start Guide.

e. Save your environment to lock in your new settings.

. Open the PrintCertification ManagerSelect ColorBurst menu > PrintCertification Manager to open the PrintCertification Manager dialog.

Certify your System

After creating a PrintCertification Reference and enabling PrintCertification in the Ink & Color Settings dialog, you can certify your system to prove that it is performing in the same manner that it was when you created your PrintCertification Reference file. You will be printing a target to compare to the origi-nal reference measurements.

IMPORTanT The “system” that you are certifying includes the printer, ink, paper, and ColorBurst environment. Before running PrintCertification, make sure you have loaded the correct ColorBurst environment and are using the same ink and paper in your printer. Also perform a nozzle test at the front panel of your printer to ensure that there are no clogged jets before PrintCertification.

1. Click the PrintCertification buttonThe PrintCertification button in the toolbar is now active because PrintCertification was enabled in the Ink & Color Settings dialog. Click the PrintCertification button to perform a system PrintCertification test.

Figure 4.1. Click the PrintCertification button in the toolbar to certify your system.

. Print a targetSelect your device from the list and click the Print Target button. The target file is sub-mitted to the Job List. Keeping the PrintCertification window open, go to the Job Manager window to print the file (make sure the RIP is On and Activate the file if necessary). After your target has printed, return to the PrintCertification Manager window and click the Next button to continue.

Figure 4.4. Click the Load Data button to load the .CTG file.

. Review the resultsThe data from the original reference file is compared to the data you loaded in step 4. The Delta E values show the difference in the color measurements. If the difference is less than the Delta E threshold set in the PrintCertification Reference, the PrintCertification will Pass. If any of the Delta E results are too high, the PrintCertification will Fail. Click Next to Continue.

If the PrintCertification has failed, try the following suggestions:

• Try reading the target again.

• Make sure you are using the same spectrophotometer that was used to create the PrintCertification Reference.

• Make sure you are using the correct environment, paper, and ink for the PrintCertification.

• Go to the front panel of your printer to perform a nozzle check. Clean the print heads if necessary.

• Relinearize your environment using a UV-filtered spectrophotometer (see the SpectralVision Pro documentation for instructions).

• If you receive a Linearization Warning when loading the new linearization file, go to the Ink & Color Settings dialog to adjust the Channel Ink Reduction levels.

If you have tried all of the suggestions and PrintCertification is still failing, please contact Epson Technical Support for assistance.

Certify Individual Prints with Epson PrintCertification Labels

After you certify your system, you may want to certify each individual print. For each print that is measured, you can print a PrintCertification label using a DYMO LabelWriter printer. The label shows whether the measurements passed or failed as well as the date and time, the Delta E values, the ColorBurst environment, and the PrintCertification Reference.

IMPORTanT The prints that you are certifying are compared to a reference that includes measure-ments based on your complete system — your printer, ink, paper, and ColorBurst envi-ronment. Before printing make sure you have loaded the correct ColorBurst environ-ment and are using the same ink and paper in your printer. Also perform a nozzle test at the front panel of your printer to ensure that there are no clogged jets.

label Printer Setup

Before printing PrintCertification labels to the DYMO LabelWriter you will need to do the following:

1. Install the labelWriter driverYour LabelWriter ships with a CD containing the printer driver. Install this driver before printing labels.

. Set Page Settings for the labelWriterBefore you print labels from SpectralVision Pro, select File menu > Page Setup.

• Select LabelWriter as the printer.

• The Paper Size must be set to 06 Shipping. The size of this label will be shown as 2.31” x 4.00”.

• Rotate to a landscape orientation (rather than the default portrait orientation).

Print each job with a PrintCertification target

To certify each print, you will need to add a PrintCertification target to the print. This can be accomplished by doing one of the following:

• add the target to your job manually in a layout or image editing program. This method is recommended when printing on sheet paper. Create a template file in a program such as InDesign or QuarkXPress that is the same size as your paper, and place the PrintCertification target in a margin. Each job can then be placed or imported into the template and printed to ColorBurst. When printing directly to ColorBurst from applications, your print settings must be set as outlined in the Printing from Applications PDF documents (these PDFs are located in the ColorBurst folder).

• Print the target after your job. This method can be used with roll paper. Place your job in the ColorBurst Job List and add the PrintCertification target to the Job List directly after the job. The target will print after the job prints. Make sure to go to the Printer Settings dialog and turn off Cut Media so the target is not cut off of the print. Also check your printer’s front panel to make sure cutting is disabled.

PrintCertification target files are found in the ColorBurst\Images and Targets\EPSON PrintCertification Targets folder. The target for the X-Rite Pulse has been streamlined to be as small as possible. The targets for other devices are larger because they require more space to be read correctly by the device.

Figure 5.2. The Epson PrintCertification target for the X-Rite Pulse. This target can be added to individual print jobs to certify the print when using an X-Rite Pulse. There are different targets for each device.

IMPORTanT All targets must be printed at their full size. Targets can not be scaled or cropped.
