Equality & Diversity Officer Training2015Ice BreakerWhat's your nameWhat's your sportWhat's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you at Hallam? Session objectivesTo understand the role of a club committee and where you fit into itTo understand your responsibilities and commitmentsTo gain a better understanding of equity in sportTo understand the role of participation sport in making your club more open and inclusiveSo much information that everyone needs to know...Each sessions lead to conduct:

Ice Breaker Objectives of Sessions

Then progress into the following slides before covering role specific content4What does everyone need to know?Slide TitleYou need to know aboutClub CulturePosition of ResponsibilityRepresenting MembersPolicies & ProceduresSports Club ConstitutionRegistration & Membership ProcessUsing the Students' Union WebsiteBefore we start looking at what you need to know and do as a [insert role title] there is some information which is relevant to the committee as a whole.

This includes:

Club CultureResponsibiltyRepresentationPolicies & ProceduresSports Club ConstitutionRegistration & membershipStudents Union website

5Club CultureFirst up is Club Culture6Rate you club culture...Slide TitleDefinition of cultureThe attitudes and behaviour characteristic of a particular social group

Complete the slip stating your score and why you believe this is an accurate account of the culture within your club.

NegativePositiveThere are many definitions when it comes to the word Culture but for the purpose of today we're going to focus on this one:

The attitudes and behaviour characteristic of a particular social group.

Very quickly I want you to think about the culture within your club and rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 - 1 being a negative club culture and 10 being a positive club culture.

Then write down what specifically makes it either a negative or positive culture.

Once this has been completed ask them to think about what qualities/type of environment would contribute towards a positive culture before progressing to the next slide.

You could make a note of these on Flipchart paper if you like. 7An ideal club culture...Slide TitleFUNINCLUSIVEENJOYABLECHALLENGINGSOCIALPERFORMANCE DRIVENWELCOMINGFRIENDLY OPEN TO CHANGEDIVERSECompare what they mentioned to what is included in this slide.

Still need to add more

Clubs need to ensure that they are working towards all of these. 8ResponsibilityNext up is responsibility9You are responsible...Slide TitleAs a committee member you hold a position of responsibility. This means that if there is a disciplinary within your club, responsibility could fall on you, even if you weren't involved.

Consequences could be that you are stripped of your role and restricted from being on any committee in the future.

You could also have to face Students' Union and University Disciplinary procedures.

As a committee member you hold a position of responsibility. Essentially this means that collectively you are the face of the club and ultimately responsibility (could) fall on you if the club was to be involved in a disciplinary.

Even if you weren't involved!

You may be stripped of your role and prohibited from being on a committee in the future.

You could also be passed over the University and go through their disciplinary procedures.

This is a worst case scenario and we hope nothing ever come to this but you need to be aware.

You could make the comparison to a normal employment if that helps to explain.

10RepresentNext is Represent11Represent your members...Slide TitleThe committee exists to represent club members

What would you do in the following situations...

The club committee is discussing the option of buying a large piece of equipment from the clubs account and can't come to an agreement

Club members are unhappy with the time of one of their training sessions

Club members want their Sports Ball tickets subsidising by club funding

The committee exists to represent the members of the club - much like when a politician is elected!

**Ask them to shout out what they think this means.

**Answer - Listening to the needs of your members and acting upon what they have said by speaking to the SPAO or a member of SU staff to create change.

Ask them what they would do in the following scenarios based on what representing means.

There are no right of wrong answers we just want them to get used to the process of either asking their members for their opinion and making decisions based on that or taking members opinions and trying to act upon it. 12Policies & ProceduresSo whilst you maintaining or developing your club culture, being responsible for your club and representing your members you have to be mindful of the policies and procedures that the SU have.

We understand that this is a lot to ask but we know you are more than capable of doing it.

13There have been a lot of changes...Slide TitleYou have to do everything we have covered whilst operating within the Students' Unions policies and procedures.

Some Policies and Procedures will be covered in more detail shortly but I would strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with all of them.

They can be viewed on the Students' Union Website. We're not going to go through them all now. The majority will be covered in different role sessions but we would strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with them all.

They are available to view of the SU website on the Sports Club resources page. 14Sports Club ConstitutionNext...Anybody know what a constitution is?

**Answer - A document which includes principles and/or points in which an organisation has to be governed by.

Essentially details how clubs need to operate in order to be classed as an SU Sports Club. 15Your club constitution...Slide TitleIt includes details about:PurposeMembershipCommitteeMeetingsRolesFinanceWinding UpYou will all have to sign the constitution to show that you agree on and understand how your club should operate

It includes information regarding (just give a few examples):

Membership - who can be a member of your club? Information about associate members? The minimum number of members that you have.

Meetings - Annual General meeting and Emergency General meeting

We'll be sending this to you at a later date so keep your eyes peeled. . 16Membership & RegistrationWe'll cover Membership & Registration now17What's the process?Slide TitleThe process can be viewed on the Students' Union website and anytime.

Let's go through it step by step

It's vital that everyone registers on the SU website and pay's the appropriate membership and it's your responsibility as a committee to make sure members complete the process.

We will be doing spot checks at training and before fixtures!

Explain to those clubs who have a recreational membership have to just use the SU website. When they buy their membership they'll automatically be registered.

Recreational membership includes:ArcheryCanoeClimbingDodgeballCyclingEquestrianFMCBoxingSail & WindsurfSnowsportsSub AquaWomen's American Football

Plus those development squads from performance clubs. (Women's hockey, Women's lacrosse, Men's Football, Korfball, Netball)

Clubs with a performance membership need to follow this process (click link)

After going through process

Remind them that responsibility lies with them to ensure members have paid membership and registered.

We will be conducting spot checks at Training and fixtures. 18SU WebsiteFinally, the website.

Does your club focus on training for competing in BUCS?

Participation Sport at HallamDoes your club have a 'participation sport' session?

- if so, what is the relationship between 'low ability' participants and the rest of the club

- if not, what could you do to cater for 'low ability' participants?

Selection Policy Can you be more equitable?

Who is disadvantaged in sport?Barriers to participationChallenging inequitable behaviourDealing with inequitable behaviourAction plan for your role

"Sports Equity is about fairness in sport, equality of access, recognising inequalities and taking steps to address them. It's about changing the culture and structure of sport to ensure that it becomes equally accessible to everyone in society"

Sport England 2000Who is Disadvantaged in Sport?Although many different groups of people are disadvantaged in sport. There are particular groups of people who generally experience discrimination on a more regular basisDisabled peoplePeople from minority ethnic communitiesWomen and girlsEconomically disadvantaged peoplePeople of different agesGay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.Remember: some people may fall into more than 1 category. These aren't the only ones. It's important to identify who these people are and seek adviceBarriers to ParticipationLack of awareness of activities on offerInconvenient timesLack of spare timeDomestic/ work commitments taking priorityInconvenient venuesPoor facilitiesLack of transportFear for personal safety travelling to/from venueExpense of participationPrevious negative experiences (PE at school)Lack of motivationParental attitudes and influencesWhat do you think could be barriers to participation in your sport? Some barriers are relevant to people from key equality strandsEquality StrandBarriersDisabled peopleAssumptionsLack of informed coachesPoor communicationPoor facilitiesMinority Ethnic GroupsCultural/ Religious InfluencesFear of discriminationUnwelcoming environmentWomen and GirlsPractical - personal safety, lack of female coachesPersonal - body image, lack of confidence, peer-group pressuresocial and cultural - People of Different AgesAttitudes of othersOther commitmentsLow self esteemPoor communicationEconomically Disadvantaged PeopleCost of activityInconvenient venue - travel costLow self-esteemLGBTAttitudes of othersLow self-esteemFear of bullying1 more disadvantage group...Does your club have a trial process?Does your club solely focus on training for competing in BUCS?

You are not being equitable to: 'Low ability' participants or beginners

Can you be more equitable?

Is there capacity in your club to have development squads? Can you have more teams (if not entered into BUCS, a local league? Can you signpost them to other activity at the University?

Simple questioning at the sports fair can help filter out those who should trial, and those who should be signposted to 'recreation activity'. The way your club handles this should be done in an equitable way

Task 2In your groups..

1. List equitable ways a club could handle 'low ability'/ beginners

2. List inequitable ways a club would handle 'low ability'/beginnersChallenging Inequitable BehaviourAs Equal Opportunities Officer you have a responsibility to behave equitably yourself and promote equitable behaviour among your club members.Type of Inequitable BehaviourExamplesVerbalRacist, sexist or homophobic language. Ridicule or bullying because of a personal characteristic (e.g being disabled)WrittenAll of the above written in some way (eg mobile phone text, social media)PhysicalAction taken against somebody because of their race, gender, personal characteristics, sexuality. Examples include:

PushingPunchingbitingTripping up and pretending it was an accidenttouching somebody inappropriatelystealing or destroying other people's propertyexcluding somebody from taking partDealing with Inequitable BehaviourHaving a code of practiceAvoid confrontationselect the most appropriate time and place to challenge inequitable behaviourBe a good role modelUse language that is relevant, sensitive and appropriatedevise a way to punish persistent offendersdevise a way to reward fair play and equitable behaviourJust because one person doesn't take offence, others might - point this out.

If you feel you can't deal with a situation. Note down the problem and speak to Students' Union staff.Your RoleAction Plan:

If someone feels discriminated. How can they make themselves heard? Will you introduce yourself as Equal Opps? Be approachable?Promote how someone can contact you if they have a problem? If you can't deal with the situation, do you know who to go to for help? How will you make sure your club understands equal opportunities? How are you going to share the information your learnt today? What procedures are you going to put in place? already in place?Does your club have a selection policy? Is it fair?Who makes sure the policy is followed? (you? everyone?)Any questions?
