The ACTSmart Public Event program is an ACT Government initiative aimed to encourage public event organisers to implement recycling at their event. Good signage and easily identifiable bins can make a huge difference to the recycling result at an event and the following items are available Free of charge to all events signed up to the program.

2. A FrAmE siGns These signs are great for raising the profile of recycling at your event we recommend you place them at the entrance and exit of your event or in areas creating the most waste such as near food and beverage vendors.

1. Bin TOPs These covers are designed to sit over 240 litre bins (standard ACT domestic recycling bins) they are ideal for smaller events such as fetes, fairs and sporting carnivals.

3. A2/A4 COrFLUTE siGns These signs can be used in the same way as the A Frames and are best suited to outdoor events where they can be hung on a fence or a post.

4. A3 rECyCLinG VEndOr siGns These signs are used to inform/remind event patrons of what catering items can be placed in the recycling bins.

5. A3 COmPOsTinG VEndOr siGns These signs can be used to inform/remind event patrons which items can be placed in the compost bin at events using a three bin system.

6. CAFE siGns These signs are designed to sit on the counter of catering vans or tents and items such as coffee cups or plastic bottle can be sat on them to remind event patrons that they can be placed in the recycling bin.

7. A4 FOOd wAsTE siGns These signs can be used either above or stuck onto bins capturing food waste for composting. We have found they are mostly used back of house to help caterers separate their waste.

12. TrAiLEr ACTSmart has a secure trailer in which the recycling equipment for your event can be delivered and picked up. This is great at events where security may be an issue.

9. CrOwdEd ArEA siGnAGE These signs are designed for crowded areas where it is sometimes difficult to see bins due to the number of people, you can sit two or four 240 litre bins underneath them.

8. skiP siGnAGE These signs fit over the edge of a skip bin and can help to ensure that waste is separated correctly in waste compounds and back of house areas.

10. sPECiALisEd siGnAGE When needed specialised signage can be developed for particular events. The signs below were developed for the Nara Festival where many food vendors and patrons first language was Japanese.

11. wATEr UniTs The ACTSmart water units effectively act as a portable bubbler, they allow event patrons to refill their water bottles with FREE tap water. To use these at your event you need access to a potable water tap.

FACTSHEETACTsmArT PUBLiC EVEnT rECyCLinG PrOGrAm

What is it? This program is designed to help event organisers and patrons to implement recycling at a public event. Event organisers are provided with a best practice guide, bin covers, signage, education and support to achieve a reduction in waste to landfill whilst increasing materials recovered for recycling. Canberran’s are Australia’s top recyclers at home and they expect the opportunity to recycle at public events. Many events produce significant amounts of material, some of which is waste, but mostly consists of potentially recyclable material including paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastics and organics. The ACTSmart Public Event logo provides customer recognition of your waste management achievements.

Who can apply? The ACTSmart Public Event program is available to any event in the ACT. These events can range from small to large such as a school fete, festivals, fairs, shows or sporting events – any community based event. How will ACTSmart Public Event help my event? Reducing the amount of waste your event sends to landfill can have direct benefits for the event, staff and the bottom line. Here are some of the advantages: • can reduce costs – sending waste to a recycling centre is 50% cheaper than tipping at the landfill • reduces impacts on the environment which is very important to the public

How do I access it? To participate in ACTSmart Public Event program you will need to meet with the Public Event team and sign a memorandum of understanding between your event and the Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate (ESDD) to undertake the ACTSmart Public Event waste management process. It costs nothing to participate and we provide the ACTSmart Public Event guide, bin covers, advice and other resources to help you through every step of the process.
