EQUIPMENT INTRODUCTION PROJECT 2D DESIGN AND LASER CUTTING
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Participants are introduced to the laser cutter by designing and fabricating their own nametag. This activity introduces the basics of 2D design and laser cutting. This project can be done at the beginning of a workshop to help students and educators to learn each other’s names.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Fabrication: participants learn about laser cutting as a method of fabrication.
Design: this project introduces 2D design.
SOFTWARE
Any vector drawing software may be used for this project. For example:
Inkscape | INKSCAPE tutorials
A free software program for designing vector graphics

EXAMPLE SESSION: 55 MINUTES + LASER CUT TIME
Introduction: 5 minutes
Explain to the participants that they will be working to create a nametag. Show examples of laser cut nametags and explain the laser cutting process.
It is recommended to have physical examples for participants to examine the size, shape and feel of laser cut material. This will also help when explaining the process and the properties of the laser cut material.
Introduce the 2D Design Software: 10 minutes
Spend time introducing the 2D design software. For example, show how to:
• Create, move, and rotate shapes and lines • Copy and paste objects • Combine and subtract objects 2D Design: 30 minutes Have groups create their 2D designs Fabrication: varies depending on the number of participants (usually 5 minutes per nametag) Have participants cut out their nametags on the laser cutter. It is recommended to assemble all the nametags onto one document and cut them at once to save time.
Reflection: 10 minutes
Have participants introduce themselves, share their nametags, and reflect on how they would improve their design or design process if they were to do this project again.
