    COSMETICS PRODUCTION..

    – What do people use for making up small test batches of cosmetics (liuid, emulsions, etc!"#

    – $s there an alternati%e to the kitchen blender#

    – $n formulation de%elopment, &ould it be better to ha%e a homogeni'er or a mier (or both"#

    – )y company *ust &illing to order mier for making perfume (liuid"! +o&, $m *ust &onder se%eral things - What is the rpm of the

mier# also about the type of blade, &hat is the best type to get homogenous liuid # .nd &hat else to &atch#

    – $/m *ust &ondering &hat/s the most efficient type machine used for loose po&dercompact! $s it a combined homogeni'er and

    mier#

    – $/d like to kno& if &e can manufacture stable emulsions on an industrial scale &ithout using a homogeni'er of rotor stator

type! $n this case &hat type of miing de%ice must be chosen (shape, speed, diameter!!ect"#

    – Would like to get a decent filler and some type of homogeni'er or mier for lotions that $ don/t ha%e to stand there and hold the

    &hole time!

    – $ ha%e to get some kind of mier but not lab si'ed and not huge manufacturing si'e! tinks to be stuck in the middle but that/s

the reality of it! $ &ould like to get something $ can stick in the kettle &ith the emulsion and let it stir constantly to help cool and

colloid mill is needed to process this pigment not *ust 7mortir/

.ccording to their functions, &e can di%ide these euipments into se%eral categories, namely -

1! 8uipment to process color cosmetics!

6his euipment in the grinding process used to reduce colors, pigments and other color additi%es ( ecept pearlescent effect

pigments " do&n to their primary particle si'e of 35 microns! 9ou don/t &ant to grind pearls because a reduction in their particle

si'e reduces or eliminates their %isual effect! :rinding pigments is the most important part of producing color and decorati%e

    cosmetics!

The equipment available to perform this grinding process varies greatly  in both function and cost! 6hey are dependant on the

particular type of product or its application! ;ifferent euipment is needed if you ha%e a dry po&der, a free5flo&ing liuid, or a

%iscous paste! 6hese physical forms are all %ery similar as they are all dispersions of insoluble pigments in a suitable solvent

vehicle.6his dispersion, once it is ground, is then combined &ith the proper internal or eternal phase in the case of emulsions, or

blended &ith other components – mica and other fillers for po&der5based products, or &aes and oils in anhydrous lip products and

other lipophilic one5phase systems! 8%en though a lipstick is a hard solid at room temperature, color is added as a dispersion

    usually in castor oil!

to sufficiently grind the pigments! 6his dispersion is then added to the remaining ingredients in the formula, and heated to a

suitable temperature to allo& for uniform miing and homogeneity!

=or powders# which are dry particulate systems, a different type of grinding and dispersing method is reuired! @ere the pigments

are blended &ith either talc or a mica or sericite and then ground &ith hammer mill  or a canister type vessel with an internal high

speed intensifier bar ! 6his also reuires 2 passes to break do&n the pigments to their proper particle si'e! $n the hammer mill, the

force of the hammers mo%ing in a circular motion grinds the pigments and forced the dispersion through a screen &ith small hole

usually 0!100 inches! 6his screen usually has circular holes to allo& the po&der to pass or openings &ith a herringbone pattern!

6he net, and probably the most critical process, is that of grinding pigments for emulsion!type products! @ere the liuid %ehicle is

critical in determining &hich phase the pigments are to be dispersed! @ere, no matter &hat the liuid %ehicle, colloid mills and

e%en ball mills can be used to grind the pigments! .fter the grinding process is complete and the dispersion is free of any unground

pigments, this dispersion is added to the proper phase and the batch process is continued to completion!

. colloid mill/s grinding mechanism in%ol%es a rotor  and a stator ! .s the names imply, the rotor rotates at a high speed and the

stator is a stationary piece! 6he gap bet&een the rotor and stator can be closed to &ithin thousandths of an inch so that the

grinding process can take place! $n a ball mill, dispersions pass through a canister of tiny balls! 6he material that the balls are made

of can differ depending on hardness desired and &hat materials you are grinding! 6hey can be made of metallic or ceramic material!

6he friction of the dispersion passing bet&een all the tiny balls creates the grinding mechanism! 6his type of milling as compared to

a 35roll mill is more effecti%e in color de%elopment depending on the types of colorants being ground! Organic pigments usually

de%elop better in a ball mill! Ball mills can also generate some heat in the grinding process so precautions should be taken in order

    to pre%ent sol%ent loss &hen &orking &ith %olatile materials!

$n my o&n eperience &hen dealing &ith the nail polish, the milling of the pigment should use this kind of machine so the particle

si'e is around microns and they &ill easily kept dispersed in the product ( increase the stability "!

    2! 8uipment to mi, dissol%e or disperse

6hey *ust used for miing liuid, dissol%e solid material or dispersing solid phase in liuid phase! $n dispersing, the particle si'e

    do&n to 30 microns!

6he ;$P.G H8.I6OH is a high shear, three stage dispersing machine for the production of micro5emulsions and %ery fine

    suspensions! 6hree rotor5stator combinations (generators" in a series produce a small droplet or particle si'e, &ith a %ery narro&

distribution! 6he generators can be easily interchanged, offering the ultimate in fleibility!

    3! 8uipment to homogeni'e

6here are also homogeni'ers that can be used and are ideal for making dispersions or products uniform and homogeneous! They

smooth out the product and reduce emulsion droplet si$e %emulsifying&! 6his is also important for good product stability!
