Staff news
We welcome some new members of staff to Linton Village College this month. Alice Norman joins us as a part-time teacher of dance covering Rachel Sims’ timetable while she is on maternity leave. Beckie Fleig has joined us on reception for the afternoon shift. We also welcome Jemma North and Kieran Collis to the kitchen team as part-time Catering Assistants.
Walking the walk to raise funds for LVC
The sun shone and the rain held off on a glorious autumn morning as students and staff joined
together on the last day before half-term to walk 7 miles through the local countryside. Many
students got into the spirit by wearing a variety of fancy dress costumes, and members of the
public out walking their dogs were surprised to come across colourful animals, superheroes and
book characters. So far we have managed to raise around £7,000, which will rise to £8,000 with
the addition of Gift Aid. Thank you to everyone for your support, and to the Friends of LVC for
planning and marshalling the event. Here are some photos of a memorable day.

We ended the first half term on a
high with an incredibly successful
sponsored walk. Not only did we
raise over £7,000 for the Friends
of LVC to invest into school
facilities, but we also came
together to celebrate the
school’s great community spirit.
The photos on page 1 showcase
some of the excellent fancy dress
efforts. Thank you to everyone
who sponsored our students.
As we return after the half-term
break, we enter into a busy and
productive time in the school
calendar.
Having settled into established
routines and expectations, many
students are in the throes of
assessments this half term,
including Year 11 mock exams.
Year 7 will be experiencing
modifications to classes in
response to benchmark tests and
all students will be engaged in
curriculum assessments to track
their acquisition and application
of knowledge and skills.
We encourage parents to
monitor their children’s progress
on Go4Schools in order to take
an active interest and to support
their learning. While fairly sparse
at the start of the academic year,
Go4Schools mark sheets will
become increasingly populated
as the term passes. You can log in
from the parent homepage, using
the email address registered with
the school, to explore the
assessment data available.
Parents’ guides are available on
the school website to support
with your understanding of data
and assessment.
In addition to providing an
overview of assessment data,
Go4Schools is also the platform
that we use for recording
learning behaviours. You are able
to review positive house points
accrued as well as any negative
behaviour events.
Although we are well into the
swing of the academic year, we
are continuing to experience
some ongoing uniform issues.
Having to repeatedly address
basic expectations is a distraction
from our core focus: learning.
Parents play an integral role in
helping children to adhere to our
code of conduct. While teenagers
will naturally try to push
boundaries, it is important that
we minimise students’ attempts
to assert and judge themselves
and each other on the basis of
fashion and peer pressure—one
of the fundamental reasons for
having a uniform dress code.
Please see further clarification on
page 4 of the May newsletter.
Thank you for your continued
support with this.
As always, please contact my PA
at [email protected] if you
would like to make an
appointment with me.

‘Sound of Music’ - the cast is announced
We are excited to announce that the cast for The Sound of Music has been decided and parts have been
chosen. We were extremely impressed with the talent and commitment students showed during auditions,
which made casting incredibly difficult because there were so many people to choose from. Over 100 people
put themselves forward and we are truly grateful to be working in a school where so many students want to
take part in the Arts.
We congratulate Reuben Kirkman and Sasha Petty who will be playing our leads as Captain von Trapp and
Maria Rainer. Isabella Osborn earned herself another lead role as the Mother Abbess, with Karina Beck, Emily
Hirst and Olivia Crawley joining her as the other lead nuns. Casting the Von Trapp children was by far the
hardest decision to make, so congratulations to Daisie Hadley (Liesl), Oscar Charlesworth (Friedrich), Olivia
Clarke (Louisa), Gilbert Dicks (Kurt), Faye Dower (Brigitta), Aliyah Haynes (Marta) and Akari Barter (Gretl).
We would like to thank everyone who auditioned. If students who did not get a role this time around would
still like to be involved, there are a number of other aspects of the production that they could help with. We
are always looking for enthusiastic and committed people to aid us with set design, hair and make-up,
lighting and sound, backstage and refreshments. We will be holding a meeting in
the New Year to give more information about these roles.

News from the Junior Leadership Team
I am writing as Press Secretary of the Junior Leadership Team. This year, we are emphasising how the JLT can really change things in the school. We have given assemblies to all year groups about how easy it is to have your say in how the school is run, simply by turning up to forums on Friday lunchtimes at 1.15pm. We are even in talks to have free chips for those who turn up first at the Environment Forum!
Our current projects are in the Ethos Forum—working towards helping local charities within school, including the ones we support at Linton Zoo—and the Environment Forum, whose alliance with the Zoo Club allows us to directly help the Zoo and donate to The Lion Guardians, a charity which pays the fees of anti-poaching agents, and The Snow Leopard Trust, which researches the endangered animals. Zoo Club runs after school on a Wednesday. In the works in the Learning Forum is an outreach programme to our feeder schools to ease the transition for Year 6, and also a Study Buddy programme in the Library for help with homework at lunchtimes. My fellow Press Secretary Lucy Wood and I are setting up a student-run e-magazine as well—if your child is interested in writing about books, film and TV or drawing comic strips and giving advice, or anything else they are interested in, please get in touch at [email protected] and we will help to edit it. This will hopefully create a thriving journalistic community and is a great attribute on a CV.
If you have any ideas or would like to help us fundraise for our current charities, please contact me. Thank you!

Attendance Matters: Linton Health Centre has advised us that if parents are taking their child for a medical appointment during the school day, an appointment card is all that is needed to show the college. Thank you for your support.

Chilford Hundred Education Trust news
On 1 November, we formally welcomed Linton Heights Junior School as a member of our Multi Academy Trust. We are excited by the opportunities that will be created by this partnership of schools, including Linton Village College and The Meadow School, Balsham.
We are pleased to invite you to our first e-Safety Parents’ Forum on Wednesday 30 November from 6.30-7.30pm. As you are aware, social media is an everyday part of many students’ lives. We would like to offer you some advice and guidance on how to manage your child’s safe online behaviour.

Could you be an on-call firefighter?
More on-call firefighters are needed to swell the ranks at our Linton Fire Station. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is hoping to encourage those who live or work within five minutes of the Balsham Road on-call fire station to consider taking up the role to help out their community. On-call firefighters are fully trained professionals who save lives in their communities alongside their day-to-day jobs and home lives. They carry a pager and respond to emergency incidents as and when they happen. You will receive an annual wage reflecting the time you are able to commit along with additional payments for attending drill night and incidents. We also offer:- • Paid holiday • Pension • Opportunities for progression • Employee Assistance Programme So, are you up for the challenge? If you are interested in becoming an on-call firefighter at Linton, come along to meet the crew and learn more about the role any Wednesday evening between 7– 9pm. You can also find out more and apply by visiting http://www.cambsfire.gov.uk/careers/have-you-got-what-it-1169.aspx or calling 01480 444500.

Dilemma?
It’s 3:30 in the morning and you receive a text about an 80-year-old man who has been missing since lunchtime the day before. What do you do? It’s Sunday at 4pm and you receive a text, a teenager has not been seen all weekend by his parents. What do you do? Can you re-arrange your day to help these people? If you are at work could you get off early to help?
These are the types of dilemmas that volunteers at CamSAR face. Cambridgeshire Search and Rescue (CamSAR) is the Lowland Rescue unit covering our county, and also assisting sister teams in the wider region.
We are a specialist team, called upon by Police in the search for vulnerable missing people: a child, an elderly person suffering from dementia or even someone who is considering taking their own life. In each case, and many others, an emergency response is vital.
Our Search Technicians, Team Leaders, Search Planners, Operations Managers and Search Managers turn out at all hours of the day and night to respond to the missing person’s emergency.
We are 100% professional
Working closely with our Lowland Rescue sister units and our partners at the UKSAR level, every team member is trained to exacting national standards and undergoes yearly re-certification through continual training.
We receive 0% pay
Available 24/7/366, the team is made up 100% of dedicated fully trained volunteers and receives no government funding, relying entirely upon one-off grants and individual donations – and team members’ own pockets – to continue to provide this service.
We are always on the lookout for new recruits and for ways of raising funds to keep our unit going. If you would be interested in doing either of these please contact us.

I am still collecting used black school shoes and blankets in good
condition to be recycled for the Kyangala Trust in Kenya, which I
visited last summer. Please clean the shoes, tie the laces together,
place in a carrier bag and give them to me or any student in 9SG.
Thank you.
