DESCRIPTION
Erasmus guide for students who will attend Instituto Superior de Agronomia - Lisbon. English VersionTRANSCRIPT
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENCY
Dear colleague,
Before I get started, I want to welcome you not only to Portugal, but especially to Instituto Superior
de Agronomia.
I also wish you the best in this new stage of your academic journey. This semester that lies ahead of
you will be, without a shadow of doubt, an enriching and unique experience in your life.
ISA is a very particular college with its own individual environment. In the next 6 months, you will
have time to explore every little corner of ISA’s 120ha and to uncover lost secrets of Tapada da Ajuda. Not to
mention that you will find that ISA can be a very cozy “foster house”!
In a way of helping you out during this new journey of yours, AEISA gathered all the information you need to know about our beautiful city, our institute and all other institutes where you might need to go to. The next few months may turn out to be pretty restless due to the big integration process that you will find yourself caught in. There will be a lot for you to catch up with, not only studies, gatherings and news, as well as all the parties!
However, AEISA’s effort to help you doesn’t finish in the end of this guide: throughout the semester AEISA will be developing and planning plenty of activities that will bring you closer to the life in our college, as well as outside it.
At AEISA headquarters you can find the friendly, and always ready to help, Anabela. She is the one you can always look for in case you need help or if you’re having any problem during your stay in ISA. You may also want to take in consideration that AEISA headquarters is opened from 9:30AM until 5:30PM and that you can always just pass by if you have some leisure time to spend.
If you want to practice any sport you may enroll in one, or several, of AEISA’s sport teams. We have three male teams for: Rugby; Soccer 11; and Basketball. And two female teams for: Soccer; and Volley. To enroll in any of them, all you have to do is pass by AEISA secretariat.
Although, if your interest is more inclined towards science matters, then you may want to, be a part of one of ISA’s nuclei. Or, if you feel that maybe you’re more into cultural activities, then spend some time with our tunas; male (AgriculTuna) and female (Tunassa).
You also don’t want to miss out on the opportunity of becoming a member of AEISA. It gives you many benefits, such as discounts in: ISA’s bar; copyIs@; gyms; hotels; public pools; copy centers; adventure parks; museums; and more for only 10€! To do so, all you have to do is pass by AEISA secretariat.
Last but not least, I truly wish you the best semester of your life during your stay in our glorious Institute, and that you may experience, and retain, the best memories of all the good moments I’m sure you shall have during your journey here.
Agronomic greetings,
AEISA Presidency.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
The Landscape Architecture is based on the visual arts, physical and natural
sciences and the study of landscape evolution, seeking to apply scientific principles
and artistic planning, supervision, construction and management of the landscape, to
allow the rational use of resources needed for life and welfare of the population. The
objectives of the course require the acquisition of knowledge about the capacity of natural
systems, soil use, human behavior and the basic principles of planning and landscape
construction. During formation, students are encouraged to seek the best organization of
outer space while minimizing the negative impacts of their intervention in the environment.
BIOLOGY
Biology currently encompasses a huge range of areas that can go from
biomolecules to biosystems up, through the cellular structure, organisms and populations.
These areas are involved in important issues such as gene therapies, global change,
natural resource degradation, biodiversity loss, water pollution and air pollution,
treating and recycling waste, etc.
The skills acquired by graduates of the first cycle in biology have to be aware that
biology is an experimental science. Thus, they should:
o Master the scientific method and be able to undertake a critical way of thinking;
o Be able to understand the problems they face and have the ability to search for
information needed to address them;
o Be able to relate science, technology and society and have a humanistic view of
Biology;
o Be able to have discussions about intervention and the limits and dangers of
certain technologies and have an important role in educa ting the people
explaining the principles underlying biotechnology and ecological problems
that give rise to ethical problems;
o Have the technical competence to perform work in the laboratory or field under the
activities inherent to biology, particulary in the areas of biotechnology, nature
conservation and other specific applications such as ecology, health or environmental
conservation.Be able to understand the problems they face and have the ability to
search for information needed to address them;

FOOD ENGINEERING
The Food Engineering course aims to form Food Industry professionals with
extensive knowledge in the area of Quality and Safety, and appropriate skills to design,
planning and management of industrial units. The training in this specialty focuses on the
integrated knowledge of science and technology, enabling the interpretation and control of
phenomena associated with biochemical changes, physico-chemical and microbiological that
affect food, from row materials to final products.
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
The degree in Environmental Engineering aims to form graduates trained
professionally to solve the problems currently facing the field of a modern, sustainable
agriculture, based on technological systems aimed at preserving the environment and
natural resources. With the aim of further specialization, the degree gives a solid basic
preparation that enables them to pursue studies at master level. The degree provides
the skills necessary for graduates to interact with other professionals in the
implementation of agro-environmental projects, water management, environmental
protection, exploitation of natural resources.
FORESTRY ENGINEERING
The course aims to provide internationally recognized knowledge in Forestry
and Natural Resources. Specifically, in the 1st cycle, the course offers a unique
integration of knowledge in scientific areas such as Biology, Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry, Earth sciences and ecology, with knowledge of Economics and Social Sciences
and Forestry. This integration is instrumental to the development of skills to enable
future engineers to be leaders in planning, certification, management, conservation,
restoration and monitoring of forest ecosystems and industrial use of forest products.

inherent problems, develop, implement and master development policies with a view to
fulfilling the needs and preferences of consumers while ensuring safety in the food
chain, improve production systems used in animal production, capable of inspiring
advances in the areas of production, conservation and technological upgrading of
animal feed, animal breeding and reproduction, hygiene and sanitary control of
livestock buildings and, finally, to intervene in innovative by introducing new trends and
application of biotechnology in the production sectors. Being also mention that animal
production is now an extremely competitive business in developed countries and the EU
which represents over 50% of the gross value of agricultural production. Hence the
economic importance of this profession and the consequent need for greater
specialization and specific preparation in this productive sector. The career opportunities
may be targeting both the public sector, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries
and Rural Development (Directorates General and Regional Bodies of the quality
control of products, Research and Development Organizations), Ministry of Science and
