President’s Annual Report
By Nick Newton
A quick overview of the past season shows that we met our important obligations to
Newcastle City Council and Hunter Branch for the 2015 – 2016 season. This was once
again achieved by the dedication and keenness of our members meeting all our
patrol, manning and equipment requirement targets without incurring any
infringements.
As always thanks goes to the hard work of our education department, with their
ongoing training we once again had a number of new patrolling members come onto
our ranks to help boost numbers and offer new skills. Over the years the material and
scope of this training has increased greatly and it is showing in the quality of the new
members that are joining us on the beach.
Once again your committee team members have done a fantastic job in managing not
only each of their positions but the overall
running of the club, as I mentioned at our
awards night these guys are the hub of the
spinning wheel that keeps our club rolling
along smoothly as things just wouldn’t
happen unless they did their job and I
can’t thank them enough for their effort
and support over the year.
Over the season;
Following on from Nobbys SLSC receiving
a significant funding grant to rework their
club house we have been approached by
the city council asset manager to consider what a potential club refurbishment would
mean to Merewether. There is a lot of discussion yet to be had as we come to fully
understand what that involves and how it would affect our club and future members.

Page 10
Sponsors Peter Glennie and Louise
Ormerod from Juice Plus+
This season sponsorship has been one of our strongpoints with Adrian (Harte)
working hard behind the scenes getting us some fantastic results. We have been
fortunate in gaining the much anticipated second grant from Port Waratah Coal
Services for $22k. Adrian is also trying hard to secure us a new grant with the
Stronger Communities Program and both
of these funding programs are aligned to
the ongoing Function Room kitchen
upgrade and if successful this would allow
us to complete the works in full.
We were also fortunate with the “Juice Plus”
company joining us as major sponsor
earlier in the season and CEO Peter Glennie
has been happy with our association and
as such has already indicated they will
continue this support in the new season.
The Beach Hotel continue with their long
term support of our club and John and Lyn
Twohill joined us on presentation night where they presented us with a $6,400
cheque for the purchase of one of our old surf boats that will be mounted on the roof
once the refurbishment of their premises is completed.
PRD have approached us to also continue their sponsorship in the new season, PRD
Safehands already have their name on an IRB and Director Mark Kentwell is keen to
keep their company flag flying at our club into the future.
Merewether Board Riders in an effort to form stronger ties between our clubs have
sponsored us with a new rescue board and they again ran the Branch Surf Board
Riding championships on our behalf.
It is not practical to list them all here but as we are aware our sponsors, large and
small, are a vitally important part of our club and their association with us is
something we very much appreciate and are very grateful for.
-
Page 11
During the season we performed some building maintenance and much needed
painting – thanks to those that helped and shortly the NCC will be undertaking the
repair/replacement of the Seawall and walkway between our club and south to the
rotunda. The work will match the concrete and finish of the existing walkway and
walls and is expected to be completed before Xmas ’17. From a beach management
perspective this should not impact on our patrol ability and the end result will
enhance that area of walkway.
With Dave and Lisa pushing the barrow and Bob Hawes selling corporate tickets we
saw another great effort with a return of $8k in “Ducks for Dollars” ticket sales this
season. Also the ever present Susan and Norm were kept busy running our function
room and bar and they again worked with the Surfest people with hall hire and
support of that event.
Again a big thank you to all our committee members and in particular Emma and
Dave who have done more than their share with organising and by keeping us on the
straight and narrow through the year and of course a big thankyou to all our
members for doing what you do and making
our club the great place that it is.

Membership Report
By Peter Campbell, Registrar
Active membership for 2015-16 season at Merewether Surf Life Saving Club was at
the 3rd of July 2016 is 667 active members, according to custom reports derived from
surfguard.
The WWCC (Working With Children’s Check) was mandatory this season for all 13
hunter Surf Lifesaving Clubs under the umbrella of Hunter Surf Life Saving.
NSW Surf Life Saving did not have WWCC as mandatory for Season 2015-16, which
caused angst and confusion from a number of our members.
Please note all members activated for the 2015-16 season on surfguard by the
Merewether Surf Club Registrar had a current WWCC (Working With Children’s Check)
prior to membership approval as per Hunter Branch directive and Merewether Surf
Club Committee directive at the season’s start.
Next season should be much easier with
respect to WWCC (Working with Children’s
Check) as the check lasts for 5 years from
date of application.
Electronic registration process worked well
for 2015-16 season at Merewether Surf
Life Saving Club; however some members
were given friendly assistance with
computing.

Education and Training Report
By Warren Sterling, Chief Training Officer
This season saw two groups of Bronze and one group of Surf Rescue Certificate
candidates achieve their awards and join patrols
on our beach. Existing members also obtained
further awards upgrading their skills to
strengthen their patrols and ensure the safety of
the public attending our beach. A number of
specialised awards were also obtained, including
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and
Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue. Details of
members’ award achievements are included at
the rear of this annual report.
Our club has continued to nurture and maintain our relationships with both Dixon
Park and Cooks Hill SLSCs to integrate the delivery of our clubs’ training. This has
been particularly necessary to support the fairly new “Lifesaver award”. We have
shared our club facilities and trainers for courses including Radio Operator Certificate,
Applied First Aid and Surf Rescue Certificate.
The Merewether SLSC education team has gained two new qualified trainers for
delivery of the Bronze Medallion and one additional facilitator for Advanced
Resuscitation Technique.
Thank you to the Merewether Education Team for their ongoing support of the
education process within our club, and to the Committee for their support of the
Education Team. Thanks to the Office staff at Hunter Branch for the help given to me
throughout my first season as the chief training officer.

February 2016 – Bronze Medallion Candidates and Trainers
IRB Report
By Nathan Wright, IRB Captain
2015/2016 Season was another great year of building on crew and driver’s numbers
with new drivers stepping up and fresh crew successfully completing the courses,
with the introduction of bringing in any suitable
new bronze course participants to include the IRB
crew course our numbers and the depth and skills
are coming along nicely and will continue, so as to
meet our patrol requirements. Thanks also to
Mark Owen and Dillan Houston for his assistance
in training the new drivers and crew and to Ralph
Foster for assistance with repairs, maintenance
and set up on numerous occasions throughout the
season. We have had a very active season using and training in IRB skills that’s really
showing results with the number of past and new operators showing more confidence
and care for the equipment.
-
Page 21
Skills Training will be again a major focus this year adding more crew and drivers to
ensure suitable coverage for patrols and water safety for events and nippers, with a
number of courses being run throughout the season and I encourage anyone keen,
contact me to get on the next available course. We now have a new registered trailer
making training at more suitable locations when the surf is up easier.
I’d like to thank PRD Newcastle’s Mark Kentwell for their generous contributions for
new Thunder Car IRB hull and Funda for supplying fuel, oils transport and
maintenance support.
We have many other sponsorship opportunities’ big and small every bit helps to run,
repair and replace the equipment if you or someone you know can help let us know.
Work Health and Safety Report
By Anthony Tietze, WHS Officer
Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) is guided by the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. As
such, MSLSC has duty of care to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health
and safety of its members, visitors and the general public. So, like it or not, from a
WHS perspective, MSLSC is effectively a “place of work”.
So how do you judge how well a place of work is performing from a safety
perspective? Compliance with audits and checklists is a no brainer, but a telling
statistic is the LTIFR or Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate. As the LTIFR is a function of
the number of hours worked, it’s difficult to apply this directly to MSLSC.
However the basis of this statistic can come from a review of our incident log book.
The following is a summary of the incident log entries.
14 entries total over the 2015-2016 season, made up of:
4 injuries from surf boards while in the water - members of the public.
2 shore break injuries - members of the public.
1 slip on rocks – member of the public.
2 slips on stairs – members of the public.
-
Page 22
2 heat related injuries – members of the public.
3 training injuries – members of MSLSC.
While our goal should always be zero injuries, none of these entries would be classed
as “lost time injuries”. The end result is that MSLSC has performed very well from a
safety perspective over the 2015-2016 season, given also that it is very difficult for
us to control the destiny of members of the public, other than through the use of
signage and general education. Please keep up the great work and be mindful of the
safety of yourself, your colleagues and the public in general.

Junior Activities Report 2015-16
By Mark Owen, Junior Activities Chairperson
The Merewether SLSC Nippers program continues to evolve thanks to the support of
all the age managers and assistants, volunteers, committee members, water safety,
BBQ helpers, coaches & trainers, who ensure that we continue to offer one of the best
surf education and junior surf sports programs in the region. I would also like to
thank and encourage all our Nippers and Nipper parents.
This year we continued with improvements to the operations of the nipper program at
Merewether SLSC by documenting procedures and developing a library of documents
and resources. We also focused on improvements to the communication process to
age managers and parents by using social media (Facebook) and SMS messages
through SurfGuard. Our water safety program continued with risk assessments in
conjunction with the Patrol Captain on Sunday mornings, also our water safety
coordinator would continually monitor the conditions and water safety ratios to
ensure the safety of all nippers during water activities. Thank you to all those who
helped with water safety. We are always after additional water safety, so any parents
of our nippers that are interested should enquire about doing their Bronze Medallion;
we need a ratio of 1:5 bronze medallion holders in the water with the juniors at all
times.
Next season there will be continued focus on the education and skills development of
all our age managers and assistant age managers.
On the competition side of nippers, this season saw only a few members participate
in carnivals. Congratulations to those that represented our club in competitions
throughout the season. Hopefully next season there will be an increase in the number
of competitors representing Merewether SLSC at carnivals.
The annual camp at Fingal Bay was once again a success with approximately 150
parents and children attending. The camp has been going for over 20 years and is a
great time to meet new people and for the kids to have some fun. Thanks to all those
-

who helped get the weekend organised. I hope this remains on the junior calendar for
a very long time. I hope all the kids have enjoyed themselves and met new friends this
year.
I would like to thank every committee member for a job well done this season. As this
was my last year as the JAC, I would also like to thank all committee members,
parents and nippers that I have been involved with over the past 4 years. I encourage
all the returning and new committee members to continue with the great work that
will result in the ongoing success of Merewether SLSC Nippers.
The Pumphouse Bar
By Susan O’Loughlin, Function Room Manager
It has been business as usual for the Function room over the past 12 months bringing
to life celebrations such as birthdays, weddings, engagements and parties. The
Function room improvements from our Port Waratah Coal Service’s grant last season
has given it a much needed face lift. I am happy to add the grant has been given to us
again this year, so we will be looking at a more commercial style kitchen makeover in
the months to come. Every little bit helps, and slowly our function room is becoming
quite competitive in the market place.
With an upgraded kitchen we will be hoping to utilize our space on Friday nights by
hosting pop-up restaurants. Just another way we can increase our income stream for
the club.
You may have noticed the increase of weekly hire at the club last season. We host
meditation, women’s fitness group, Karate, Tai chi and yoga. Starting soon will be a
Thursday night rock and roll dance group as well. Besides the weekly hire we have our
monthly users who are another meditation group, Sarah’s yoga and the Beach
Business Breakfast (BBB).

Page 27
BBB has grown over the past 12months from half a dozen people to over 50 now
attending regularly. This monthly business breakfast organized by Dave also provides
income for the club plus there are quite a few new hires stemming from this group.
It’s wonderful to have such a diverse group of people using our facility.
We have also had 2 quarterly Essential Oil Expos at the club with commitment for
future ones next year. I love how the club is so versatile and able to be perfect for any
occasion. A lot of that is to do with our great view I guess.
So as you can see the club is a hive of activity all week with various groups using the
room and then on weekends we further utilise the room for functions. To end the
week we have coldies each Sunday form 4pm run by Norm and this too is adding to
our income stream for the club.
Please come along and support coldies, it’s a great way to spend time with friends,
spread the word about the Pumphouse bar and show off our wonderful piece of
paradise.
I am happy to continue in my role as the function room manager and value your help
in keeping the room clean and tidy and presentable.
