Three motel staffdie of asphyxiationon ECR

Three men attached to a motelon East Coast Road died ofasphyxiation after they fellinto the motels septic tank on

Monday afternoon.According to police, the incidentoccurred at the hotel inNeelankarai. Two of the deceasedwere identied as Iqbal (50) andhis son Ashraf (20) fromMuthumariamman Kovil Street inNeelankarai. The third victim wasSelvaraj (30), the owner and

manager of the motel and residentof Saraswathi Nagar in Neelankarai.The septic tank used to be clearedevery two days. On the day of theincident, when it was time to clearthe tank, Iqbal had gone to checkthe sewage level in the tank. Policesaid he had used a stick to gaugethe level and fell into the tankafter being hit by the poisonousgas from inside.Seeing Iqbal fall into the tank,Ashraf and Selvaraj ran in to rescuehim but fell into the tank afterinhaling the poisonous gas.Other staff of the motel alertedthe police and re servicepersonnel from Thiruvanmiyurrushed to the spot. After a 30-minute struggle all three bodieswere recovered and sent toGovernment Royapettah Hospitalfor post-mortem.Neelankarai police areinvestigating.

A malicious software programknown as Concker that many feared would wreak havoc on April 1is slowly being activated, weeks afterbeing dismissed as a false alarm, se-curity experts said.

Concker, also known as Downa-dup or Kido, is quietly turning thou-sands of personal computers intoservers of e-mail spam and install-ing spyware, they said.

The worm started spreading latelast year, infecting millions of com-puters and turning them intoslaves that respond to commandssent from a remote server that effec-tively controls an army of comput-ers known as a botnet.

Its unidentied creators startedusing those machines for criminalpurposes in recent weeks by loading more malicious software onto asmall percentage of computers un-der their control, said Vincent Weaf-er, a vice-president with Symantec

Security Response, the research armof the worlds largest security software maker, Symantec Corp.

Expect this to be long-term,slowly changing, he said of the worm. Its not going to be fast,

aggressive.Concker installs a second virus,known as Waledac, that sends oute-mail spam without knowledge of the PCs owner, along with a fakeanti-spyware program, Weafer said.

The Waledac virus recruits thePCs into a second botnet that hasexisted for several years and special-izes in distributing e-mail spam.
