    When, where,

    what?Event: Mexican foodfestival

It is believed that Mexican food waspassed down from Mayan Indians,

with whom corn and beans were astaple diet. It is through the Aztec

empire that honey, salt, cinnamon andchilli peppers made their way into the

cooking. The Spanish invasion in 1521 is what brought the pork and beef in. TheChinese influence on Spanish cuisine ismost obvious in rice. And so on and soforth.

This is why Mexican food is a multi-cultural cuisine, and agreeable to eve-ryone. What was on display at Caramelat Asiana Hotel for their Mexican foodfestival was a sumptuous spread that isa tribute to the historical influences onMexican cuisine.

To start with the appetizers, the sea-food ceviche, which had fish and prawnsmarinated in citrus juice, is a must-try,as are the blackened prawns, which areserved with avocado salad. The accom-panying dips or salsas lift the taste of

the main course, and this was partularly true with the vegetable chiichangas that were served with olsalsa.

From the live station, the enthusiasgourmand will be able to taste vegetaquesadillas, but most palatably the tashells with chilli con carne, which ismix made with minced beef.

More on the plate for non-vegetaria honey and cheese are substantial gredients in this cuisine, so either the crispy Buffalo wings with honey achilli or the honey glazed chicken bre

with avocado and lemon. Even the bbequed pork ribs had a coating of honon them.

And now for the afters Mexicaramel custard, which has a spictinge than its European cousin, becauof the added cinnamon and nutmSince stewed fruit is common in tpart of the world, the stewed fig wcinnamon and walnut or the almoand prune mousse fill fit just right inthat little space in your stomach, afthe fare is over.

Almost half the worlds mon-keys and apes are facing a

worsening threat of extinc-tion because of deforesta-

tion and hunting for meat, aninternational report showed onTuesday.

We have solid data to showthat the situation is far more se-

vere than we imagined, saidRussell Mittermeier, president ofConservation International andhead of the International Unionfor Conservation of Natures(IUCN) primate specialist group.

An assessment for an IUCNRed List of endangered speciesfound that 48 per cent of the 634known species and sub-speciesof primates, humankinds closestrelatives such as chimpanzees,orang-utans, gibbons and le-murs, were at risk of extinction.

In a previous report five yearsago, using different yardsticks, just 39 per cent of primates werejudged at risk. The IUCN includesgovernments, scientists and con-

    servation groups.

    ReasonsHabitat destruction, led by

    burning and clearing of tropical

forests for farmland, and thehunting of monkeys and apes fortheir meat were the main threats. Some species were literally beingeaten into extinction, a state-ment said.

Gorilla meat, chimpanzeemeat and meat of other apesfetches a higher price than beef,

chicken or fish in some Africancountries, Mittermeier told Reu-ters.

He said that deforestation wasaggravating hunting. Roads cut tohelp loggers and burning of for-ests to create farmland wereopening previously inaccessibleregions to poachers.

    Asia worstPrimates were suffering most

in Asia, with 71 percent of all spe-cies at risk, against 37 percent in

Africa. The report was to be re-leased at a conference in Edin-burgh, Scotland.

In southeast Asia, human pop-ulations were higher than in Afri-

ca and habitats for orang-utans,gibbons or leaf monkeys weregetting ever more fragmented.Demand for pets and Chinesehunger for traditional medicines

were adding pressures.Among species most at risk, or

critically endangered, were theBouviers red colobus, an Africanmonkey which has not been seenin 25 years, and the greater bam-boo lemur of Madagascar totall-ing only about 140 in the wild.

If you took all the individuals

of the top 25 most endangeredspecies and assigned each ofthem a seat ... they probably

wouldnt fill a football stadium,Mittermeier said.

    Three-stage scaleChimpanzees, the species most

like humans, stayed endan-gered, the middle of a three-stage scale of risk between crit-ically endangered andvulnerable.

The mountain gorilla, found in jungles in Rwanda, Uganda andDemocratic Republic of Congo, stayed critically endangered de-spite a rise in numbers.

In Brazil, the black lion tamarin

and the golden lion tamarin weredownlisted to endangered fromcritically endangered after con-servation efforts.

In The Mummy: Tomb of theDragon Emperor, Rick OCon-nell (Brendan Fraser) and wifeEvelyn (Maria Bello replacing

Rachel Weisz) are busy lead-ing respectable lives of

the British upper classin 1946 England. Rick

shoots fish whenhes bored and Eve-

icles to the lunching ladies. Add to this some exaggerat-ed expressions of boredomwith their new way of life.

And like his father (and without his knowledge),

son Alex is busy dig-ging up an empe-rors tomb in

playing the good cop inmartial arts film but inhis role of the Han em-peror lacks that intimi-dating presence of

Arnold Vosloo ofTheMummy. Not for once

do you see the savagerywith which Imhotep chose

victims one by one in a bid tobring to life himself and his be-loved Anck Su Namun.

Neither does Maria Bello haveRachel Weiszs feistiness thatcharacterised Evelyn so far. Thesaving grace, if you can call it,comes in the form of Michelle Ye-oh, who as the farsighted witch

lends subtlety and class to a sit-uation where everyone is harkingon melodrama.

The special effects here are avery paled down version of The

Mummy, which is sad consider-ingThe Mummycame about nine

years ago. Cinematography madeThe Mummy, along with thepharaohs, princesses and tombs, look almost exotic. No such thinghere except a firecracker-studdedsky over Chinese New Year.

Even if you stop comparingboth films, The Mummy: Tomb ofthe Dragon Emperoris dead fish.

The biggest problem with thefilm is it is caught between theOConnell family bonding drama

and the matter of urgency athand. So in the end, both sidesremain half-baked. The entirecomedy-cum-action thing, likeheadless skeletons falling overeach other trying to look for theheads, or Brendan Fraser makingfunny faces at skinless men, is be-ginning to wear off.

    Iam just back from Thailand.

The training sessions went onreally well. I had amazing funand also learnt a lot. I really

enjoyed the gruelling hours oftraining mixed with unforgettablememories.

Having learnt to handle 200kilos bikes, I now feel on top ofthe world. It was a little difficultin the beginning but I picked upafter a while. The tracks, thetrainers, the competition, theplace everything was so good.It was a very different and an ex-

citing experience. But you know what diary; there

were these two American guysthere. They were around 45 yearsof age and they kept putting medown. After a point I couldnttake it and was getting reallybugged with them. But I never ac-tually told them anything be-cause I knew that I would have tobeat them at the race to have thelast laugh.

Ultimately when the trainingwas over I did get to have the lastlaugh. I managed to beat the both

of them and that too riding a 20kilo bike (I repeat!). I was thrilleand so happy. It lifted my spiriand I felt so good after that. Th

was one unforgettable thwhich happened in Thailand. Atually I realize that I have ovecome the phase of taking sucpeople to heart. Pushing it asidand racing forward it the key anI am happy am doing it.
