It isnt always a smooth rideeven for the most successfulof entrepreneurs. They havehad their share of trials and

tribulations before achievingfame. The story of Hashnas A.,CEO of Thalappakattu, whoseoutlets are at every importantstreet corner or junction inChennai, is a case in point.Though fighting hurdles is so-mething Hashnas has got usedto, his entrepreneurial path re-mains poignant.

Starting outSeptember 2003: A crucial

period for students waiting fortheir visas. But, destiny had so-mething else for this New Col-lege graduate.

It was post-9/11. I get a re-ject from the U.K. Embassy

and my MBA dream isdoomed, Hashnas reminisces.

The bad luck phase contin-ues. He is forced to return from

Dubai within three monthsand, consequently, his plans to

support his fathers sinkingbusiness in Chennai are alsoquashed.

With the B.Com degreeHashnas comforts himself by

working with a mutual fundcompany for a brief period, on-ly to join LIBA later. Confidentthat destiny would not againplay spoilsport in his foreignplan, he discontinues thecourse. However, his Canadavisa is also rejected.

2003-04 was the worst peri-od of my life, recalls Hashnas,

who wanted to get a post grad-uate degree before taking uphis fathers business.

Dejected, Hashnas was left with no other choice but tohelp his father in his newly-opened restaurant business.

After my dads lodging busi-ness failed, he decided to ex-tend Highway Restaurant,

which he was running in Payolihis native town in Kerala, toChennai, he recalls.

That was pastThough it wasnt any cake-

walk, the 27-year-old entrepre-neur today is riding high withan empire he nurtured from

scratch. With Rs. 40,000 A.P. Abdulla (Hashnas father)along with his friends S. Sulai-man and P.V. Basheer openedthe first Thalappakattu (mean-ing turban) joint in Koyambeduat a small rented place. Withina month of its opening, Hash-nas joined in to overlook oper-ations and branding.

But, it was the opening of thePadi outlet which came in as aturning point. Since then everyfour months they have beenadding to the chain. Today,there are 14 Thalappakattu bi-riyani joints in the city.

Food chain

Hashnas recalls, I was like

any other kitchen staff in theinitial months. I learnt to cookbiriyani before giving orders tomy staff.

Identifying new locations, in-specting each of his outlets,hiring new staffers or personal-ly taking down orders, whichhe still does, have all been partof the ballgame.

From 200 customers whenthey started, today its outletsget around 5000 people a day.Hashnas is also gearingup to tie-up with cor-porates.

Interestingly,the Arumbak-kam outlet isthe first outlet

with an officespace for him. Iat least havetime to breathenow, he says, re-ferring to the cushylittle space and takingabout his craze for shoes and

watches. Hashnas is currentlywaging a war with others in thehotel industry who are runningtheir restaurants using hisname. I will even go to a high-er court if I dont get back the

name Thalappakattu, he says.

Back to schoolConfident that he will take

the food joint places Dubai,Singapore and Malaysia are topon his agenda Hashnas willsoon be taking a break to takeup a course in Hotel Manage-ment.

Now that I am in the foodbusiness, I need to exploremore recipes and a degreeshould make the difference,he adds, before the cell phonebeeps with a customer on line.

Weider and his olderbrother Joe founded the International Federationof Body Building in 1940, and spent six decadespromoting the sport once reviled as a fringeactivity, according to a statement by WeiderHealth and Fitness.Beginning in 1947, Ben travelled theworld, promoting his sport,organising exhibitions andcompetitive events, it said.
