But it is also said that man was not “ built ” to besitting, how surprising ! The cowherd who milks acow, the ploughman on his tractor, the schoolboybehind his table, the researcher before his testbench, the technician in his workshop, the web-master, the administrative person, the writer, thejournalist behind his workstation etc., are all sitting.We all sit unaware of the type of seat on which wespend such lengthy periods of time. We thensearch for a seat in public transports, after work,the armchair, the kitchen or even at the diningroom chairs are also to be found.We have reacheda point in which we are increasingly becoming evermore urban and sedentary. Rural people, haveexchanged painfulness liberating mechanizationfor the stress of the ever changing farm yields.The extended sitting stations gave birth to a rangeof mechanical pathologies, strongly degrading ourenthusiasm for work up till discomfort.This is why this issue will try to bring light to sometruths on how best to optimize the manner inwhich we use seating mechanism within the workenvironment . Be it with dorsal support offering“ permanent contact ”, be it with the maximumcomfort of a tilting mechanism, or making use ofan automated mechanism that synchronises seatand backrest adaptation to the user’s movements.All seats offer us adjustments options, allowing fora greater protection of the intervertebral discs,essential for a good support of our spinal column.After a time when the “ heavy ” design neared a“ prothesist ” aid rather than been a naturally inte-grated element of our environment, manufacturersof work seats helped by occupational doctorsand ergonomists, are now calling upon famousdesigners and architects, to reconciled health andaesthetics. As good evidence of the results, youshall find some images of work seats, startingwith the front cover, selected by ERGONOMAJournal editors.We wish that our choice, a non exhaustive one,allows you to give to each employee the comfortand safety one deserves for a more harmoniousway of life at work.

Mais ne dit-on pas aussi que l’homme n’est pas « construit » pour être assis, surprenant non ?alors que du vacher qui traie le pis de la vache oudu laboureur assis dans son tracteur en passantpar l’écolier derrière sa table, le chercheur derrièresa paillasse, le technicien dans son atelier, le web-master, l’administratif, l’écrivain, le journaliste derrière sa station de travail …, sont tous assis.Nous sommes tous assis sans même prendreconscience du type de siège sur lequel nous pas-sons de si longues heures, puis c’est la recherchedu siège dans les transports, et après le travail, lefauteuil, la chaise de cuisine ou de salle à mangersont encore là. Nous sommes devenus majoritai-rement urbains et sédentaires, et, pour les ruraux,la mécanisation libératrice de la pénibilité destâches à donné naissance au stress du fort rende-ment. Les stations assises prolongées ont fait naître, des pathologies mécaniques plus ou moinsgraves, mais qui dégradent fortement notreenthousiasme au travail jusqu’au mal–être.C’est pourquoi ce numéro va tenter d’essayerd’apporter quelques vérités sur la manière d’opti-miser l’utilisation des mécanismes d’un siège.Qu’il soit à soutien dorsal par le « contact perma-nent », qu’il offre un confort maximum par lemécanisme basculant, ou dispose d’un mécanismesynchrone pour une adaptation automatique del’assise et du dossier aux mouvements de l’utilisa-teur, tous nous proposent des options de réglagespermettant la protection des disques interverté-braux essentiels au bons soutien de notre colonnevertébrale.Après une période au design particuliè-rement « lourd » plus proche d’un appareillage« prothésiste » que d’un élément intégré à notreenvironnement, les fabricants de sièges de travailaidés par des médecins du travail, des préventeurset des ergonomes, en faisant appel à des designerset des architectes de renom, réconcilient santé etesthétique. Ergonoma Journal: How did theprinciples applied to the conceptionof work seats evolve in time?

TONE PETRELIUS (TP) : Third Milleniumwork chairs for office use must to a veryhigh extent match the user´s needs forphysical as well as mental variation. The traditional work chair was stable andsecure, offering limited possibilities to change work postures. We can now seethe results of a long term developmenttowards a variety of functions, dimensionsand designs. The market offers aim to pre-sent sitting solutions for dynamic varia-tion. More efforts are needed to makethese solutions much easier to understandand much easier to use.

ARMIN WINDEL (AW) : Sittinghas for a long time been conside-red as a privilege and as a desira-ble position. It is true that we don’tknow where and when a man saton a seat for the first time but it is likelythat this seat was a throne. Indeed, it wasalways the powerful people who wereseated. It is proven by the contemporarynotions of “Episcopal seat“ and ”Holy Seat”still in use nowadays. It is only with theReform that a fundamental transformationof posture took place. The seated profes-sions became more and more frequent.Office work grew and became the newsource of prosperity. One can say withoutexaggerating that with the FrenchRevolution of 1789, the sitting positionwas finally democratized, and that the seatbecame gradually of current use in allsocial layers. However one must know

that the seat is accepted as a current workequipment only since about 150 years. Itis true that, when compared with the seatsof the past, today’s work seats present someconspicuous differences, however, the fun-damental conception and the characteris-tic features are preserved. Up until now, inmany companies, the design and uphols-tery of a seat correspond unfortunately toits owner’s hierarchical position. And alsounfortunately the seats are not always cho-sen according to their users’ concrete needs.

DANIEL LAZENNEC (DL) : The princi-ples that are still in use today look a lot like the one of the T-square : “ right-angles everywhere ” : foot-leg, leg-thigh,

thigh-pelvis-spine, arm-forearm. For the lastfew years, things have begun to change andevolve towards an opening of the anglesand towards more mobility thanks to avariation in the sitting working postures.Still, the old ways of thinking endure…

EJ : How would you define the term « ergonomic » as applied to workseats ?

TP : An ergonomic work seat, as well asthe whole work chair, is a sitting solutionthat follows the individual needs for activesitting. This means that the chair followsthe individual movements and simulta-neously gives the body a good support.

AW : An « ergonomic » equipment musthelp a man to fulfill his task in an efficientand effective way, that is to assist him inthe best possible way, instead of beingharmful to the short-term and long-termuser’s health, contribute to the preventionof the user’s health (ideally) facilitate theuser’s satisfaction. These standards, whichmust be adapted as a general rule to allequipment, must also be fulfilled by theergonomic seats. I will explain further whatthis means in my next answer.

DL : During my work, the adjective“ ergonomic ” qualifies the optimization ofthe physiology.

EJ : Today, in the 21st century, what are the basic principles ofan “ ergonomic ” work seat ?

TP : The basic principles are : - To support the human bodyduring sitting work in a variety of

sitting postures.- To offer freedom and possibilities tochange between different sitting posturesand body movements.- To offer high usability solutions so thatthe chair is easy to understand from thefirst day and that it is easy to use.- To offer constructions, dimensions andfunctions for various individual sizes andpersonal needs.- To match the individual´s needs in wor-king mode, varied and active sitting, inwhatever working environment.

AW : In my opinion, it is first importantto avoid a misunderstanding : the seated

position is in fact a compromise, thatmeans it has advantages and disadvan-tages, and this is true for all types of seats.Indeed, the man was not born to remainseated and his physiology is not concei-ved to stay immobile in any position forlong periods of time. For a long time, itwas believed that it would be possible to eliminate the drawbacks of the sittingposition by designing “ the ideal seat ” and by maintaining “ the optimal sittingposture ”. However, many scientific studies which have been available foryears bring evidence that the negativeconsequences of the sitting position onthe human body – the load which isharmful for the spine and has negativeconsequences on intervertebral disks, onthe ligamentary system and on the musclesof the back, the rounded back resultingfrom a long held “ comfortable ” sittingposition, the compression of the abdomi-nal organs, notably of the breathing andthe digestive tract, painful contractions inthe nape and the head, often accompaniedby diffuse pains, the atony and in manycases the reduction of the abdominal,pectoral and hip musculature – can beavoided neither by THE seat nor by ANYsitting posture. It has been recently ackno-wledged that the negative consequencesof the continuous sitting position for thehuman body can only be avoided bychanging the posture, that means bymovement. The elementary fundamentalprinciple for the creation of an ergonomicseat is to encourage movement. A goodseat must encourage a dynamic sittingposition as much as possible. The meansto reach this objective (mechanical tiltingdevices or synchronous devices, activemovement modules, by opening the anglebetween the torso and the knees so as toapproach the standing posture) are lessimportant than the fact that the employeesuse this possibility of movement. The bestseat is pointless as long as a man doesn’tlook for the possibility of movementinstead of hoping to find THE ideal seat – hoping that it will spare him the negativeconsequences of the sitting position.Another fundamental principle is the factthat the seat must accommodate as manypeople as possible and this means about90% of the population. This means that itmust be suitable for a woman 1,51 metrehigh as well as for a man 1,91 metre high.It is important that the adjustment meansare multiple because the height is in relation to the length of the back, as wellas the length of the thighs and calves, etc.It is indispensable for an ergonomic workseat to correspond to these requirements.

DL : The first basic principle : Let’sconsider a human being as we would a

house : The first necessity is to give itgood foundations. This is represented bythe feet, legs, thighs and pelvis. It is neces-sary to position the center of the founda-tion (the pelvis) in such a way that its basicposition will be the one we have whenstanding, looking at the ocean’s horizon(adjustment of the height and of the natural-forward tilt of the seat, and thenof its mobility). It is then essential that the foundations have as much ability formovement as possible, and even formicro-movements. Each one of thesemovements will generate muscular work,an activation of the blood flow, a variationof the pressure on every single interverte-bral disk. These movements can originateat the pelvis and/or the feet and thus thelocomotive muscular chains are not restrained and can stay relatively active.The second basic principle : the loadrepresented by the trunk is to be placed asjudiciously as possible while distributingthe weight of the trunk on the whole ofthe pelvis. The projection of the gravitycenter of the trunk will then reverberate onthe rear and the top of the thighs, freeingthe pelvis of the support pressures, as wellas the coccyx or the sacrum (in the frequent case of the reversed pelvis whichprepares the ground for slipped disks andrespiratory, digestive and circulatoryconstraints of the lower members).The third basic principle : from the top ofthe pelvis to the basis of the head, to besupported as well as possible as soon asthe need arises. The support of a backrest,with naperest (for the moments of liste-ning, phone conversations, thinking andpause), adjustable in height and tilt, andperfectly moulding the back, is stronglyadvisable. The top of the backrest mustfree the arms of any restraints. The use ofarmrests, adjustable in height, width,depth and orientation allows to diminishthe effect of the arms and trunk weight.

EJ : Can we consider that there are « basic » principles and « comple-mentary » principles, and whatwould they be ?

TP : We must realize that the humanbody, his or her needs of constant varia-tion and motion, is originally not made forlong term sitting. It is made for walking,standing and for short periods of sitting.Today´s working environments are theproducts of work organisations that offerlittle physical variation. Thus the long termsitting, producing risks for physical strain and mental fatigue is a reality. Thechallenge must therefore be to developsitting solutions that reminds the body ofits original needs, which is variation andflexibility between short terms postures.

The parts of the body that take part in stabilization, for instance the feet and thespine, must have a broad motion varietyand simultaneously a comfortable supportThis means that the chairs design and func-tion should offer sitting solutions for avariety of purposes. It must also be easy togive rests and breaks from sitting, in favourof standing and walking. There are no spe-cific differences between basic and comple-mentary principles. The goal is a holisticvariation and motion, where the sittingsolution is only a part in the defined workplace solution. This way a variety of sittingsolutions are developed and offered, drivenby different applied experiences, researchwork and work environment competence.

AW : The best work seat can be madeless efficient by the lack of ergonomic efficiency of the rest of the equipmentincluded in the workstation. An ergonomicseat which would meet all the aboverequirements would not be very useful ifthe desktop cannot be adjusted to the sizeof the user as well as to the height of theseat itself. It has been well known forsome time that the work environment(such as noise, light and the atmospherein the office) have a psychic and physicalimpact on the human being. Recent studies show explicitly that multiple problems, due to work organization aswell as social problems at work, manifestthemselves in the form of musculoskeletalpains. It is important to take these factsinto account while designing the ideal seat.

DL : Several supplementary elements canhave a positive effect on the work position :- Several resting points for the feet.- Easy modifications of the height of the seat.- The seat should have a mobility of a fewdegrees around the vertical axis.- The pressure under the buttocks andthighs would be much better distributedby precisely calibrated foams. Specialattention must be paid to the shape of theseat, specially those with the sides higherthan the center : they induce an internalrotation of the thighs and this reverberateson the sacro-iliac articulations by redu-cing the contact surface therefore increa-sing the pressure. - A backrest moulding as closely as possi-ble the vertebral curvature with support ofthe para-vertebral muscles. Avoid thelumbar support which only concerns afew lumbar vertebras and leaves the lowdorsal and sacrum free.- A backrest fitted with an horizontal articulation around the level of the tenthdorsal vertebra would free the solarplexus, the diaphragm and lower the pressures on the digestive tract. - A system to massage from the thighs

to the nape would compensate effectivelythe adverse results of prolonged sittingpositions. The “governance” of our body isnevertheless a requirement because thebest seat won’t give all its benefits unlesswe use it consciously.

EJ : As a specialist, what do you thinkof the public’s eye image that pre-sents the “ ergonomic ” work seat asTHE solution to preserve health atwork ?

TP : In order to solve environmental problems the employer will haveto make work analyzes in view ofwork organisation, tasks to beperformed and individual needsfor a specified work environment.These problems often mirror workrelated illnesses and disuse of workchairs because of long term sitting.The design of work places, wherethe choice of a work chair is onepart, cannot compensate for a baddesigned work organisation. The employerowns the responsibility of setting up agood work place, whereas the individualowns the responsibility of using the workplace and the chair in a good way. In thepublic ´s eye, good sitting solutions clearlyopen up for possibilities of good indivi-dual working results, satisfaction and

efficiency. The design of a good chair istransparent in the means of efficiency :the user should not bother to find outwhat mechanism or handle should be usedto give physical or mental variation. The indi-vidual should use his/her efforts on the worktasks, not on finding out how to regulate achair. A good introduction and training isneeded. To make a comparing example :who expects a pianist to play good musicwithout thorough piano training ?

AW : Looking back on my previous answers, you will not be surprised when I

tell you that in my opinion, the ergonomicseat is only ONE condition to workhealthfully, but certainly not THE solutionfor health prevention at work. It is impor-tant to consider the organization of workfor the good health of man with a holisticapproach. In my opinion, we put too muchemphasis on the equipment (desk, seat,

computer monitor, software, etc.). It is muchmore important to aim at a suitable holisticsolution – together with every concernedprofession such as the suppliers, the retai-lers, the architects, the buyers as well as thehuman task force managers. It is only by acommon effort of every actor concernedthat visible progress will be achieved.

DL : It is the most widespread image.This may be due to the fact that in therecent past, before the computer era, theemployees moved more than now and theuse of the seats meant rest time. Maybe

also the seat manufacturersconcentrate their information onthis aspect. However, I affirm thatthe seat only represents a part ofthe solutions to put in place.Indeed, the height of the work toolswhich are watched and/or touchedby the hands as well as the heightof the work plan are two otherindispensable elements to take inaccount. Otherwise, the best seat

would be just a little “ less worse “ than theseats of the distant past… and the invest-ment it represents would be just anotherfinancial cost without any return on thepreservation of health, concentration, pro-ductivity, absenteeism, social costs…

Ergonoma Journal : Quelle a été l’évolution des principesappliqués pour la conception de sièges de travail au fildu temps ?

TONE PETRELIUS (TP) : Le siège de travail du troisième millénaire destiné à un usage de bureau doit autant que possiblecorrespondre aux besoins de mobilité et de bien-être de son uti-lisateur, tant sur le plan physique que mental. Traditionnellementun siège destiné au travail devait être stable et solide, ce quientraînait peu de possibilités pour changer de position de travail.Les sièges que nous voyons sur le marché aujourd’hui résultentd’un effort de développement de conception visant à permettreune diversité de fonctions, de dimensions et de modèles. Tous cesefforts ont pour but d’aboutir à des solutions d’assise dyna-mique. Il faut encore travailler pour rendre ces solutions plusfaciles à comprendre et à utiliser.

ARMIN WINDEL (AW) : La position assise a longtemps étéconsidérée comme un privilège et comme une position désirable.Il est vrai qu’on ne sait pas où et quand un homme s’est assis surun siège pour la première fois, mais il est vraisemblable que cesiège était un trône. En effet, c’é-taient toujours des gens puis-sants qui étaient assis. Cela estprouvé par les notions contem-poraines de « siège épiscopal » et« Saint-Siège » jusqu’à nos jours.C’est seulement au moment de laRéforme qu’une transformation de posture fondamentale estintervenue. C’est ainsi que les professions assises sont devenuesde plus en plus fréquentes. Le travail au bureau s’est développé etest devenu la nouvelle source de prospérité. On peut dire sansexagérer qu’avec la Révolution Française de 1789 l’assise s’estfinalement généralisée à toutes les couches sociales. Toutefois ilfaut savoir que le siège comme équipement de travail n’estaccepté d’une manière constante uniquement que depuis 150ans. Il est vrai– comparé avec les sièges d’autrefois – que les siè-ges de travail d’aujourd’hui présentent quelques différences sen-sibles, cependant la conception fondamentale et les traitscaractéristiques sont préservés. Jusqu’à nos jours, dans beaucoup d’entreprises le design et lagarniture d’un siège correspondent malheureusement à la posi-tion hiérarchique de son propriétaire. Et malheureusement aussiles sièges ne sont pas toujours choisis en fonction des besoinspratiques de leurs utilisateurs.

DANIEL LAZENNEC (DL) : Le principe dit « de l’équerre » desanciennes assises tant décrié aujourd’hui a la vie dure et persisteencore, « tout à angle droit » : pieds-jambes, jambes-cuisses,cuisses-bassin-colonne, bras-avant-bras. Toutefois depuisquelques années on observe une certaine évolution des chosesvers une ouverture des angles et vers le mouvement grâce à unevariation des positions de travail assis. Malheureusement, lesanciens schémas ont la vie dure.

EJ : Peut-on appliquer le terme « ergonomique » auxsièges de travail qui sont actuellement sur le marché ?

TP : L’assise ergonomique, de même que le siège de travail complet est une solution d’assise qui répond aux besoins indivi-duels pour une assise active. Cela signifie que le siège doit êtresuffisamment souple pour accompagner chaque mouvementindividuel et simultanément donner au corps un bon soutien.

AW : Les équipements « ergonomiques » doivent :- Assister l´homme dans l’accomplissement de sa tâche d’une

manière effective et efficace,c’est-à-dire l´assister le mieuxpossible, ne pas nuire à lasanté de l’utilisateur à court età long terme, et dans l’idéal,contribuer à la préventionsanté de ce dernier.

- Accéder à la satisfaction de leur utilisateur. Ces critères, qui doivent être adaptés généralement aux équipe-ments, doivent être aussi respectés par les sièges ergonomiques.Je vais démontrer en détail ce que cela veut dire dans ma réponsesuivante.

EJ : aujourd’hui, au XXIe siècle, quels sont les principes debase d’un siège « ergonomique » ?

TP : Les principes de base sont :- Soutenir le corps humain lors du travail assis dans des positions variées.- Permettre une liberté de mouvement et de changer de positionassise.

- Offrir un haut degré d’ « utilisabilité » de manière à ce que lesiège soit facile à comprendre et à utiliser dès le premier contact.- Offrir une variété de formes, dimensions et fonctionnalitésrépondant aux tailles variées et aux besoins individuels.- Apporter une solution aux besoins individuels de mode de travail,d’assise active et variée, quel que soit l’environnement de travail.

AW : À mon avis, il est d’abord important d’écarter un malen-tendu : l’assise est en effet un compromis, c’est-à-dire qu’elle estaccompagnée d’avantages et de désavantages – et cela est vala-ble pour tout siège. En effet l’homme n’est pas né pour être assiset sa physiologie n’est pas conçue pour rester immobile dansn’importe quelle position pendant de longues périodes. Pendantlongtemps on a cru pouvoir éviter les désavantages de l’assise enconstruisant « le siège idéal » et en « optimisant la posture ».Pourtant, de nombreuses études scientifiques sur l’assise, dispo-nibles depuis des années, mettent en évidence les conséquencesnégatives de l’assise pour le corps humain – la charge qui nuit àla colonne vertébrale et a des conséquences négatives pour lesdisques intervertébraux, le système ligamentaire et la musculaturedu dos, pour preuve le dos rond qui résulte d’une assise longueet « confortable ». La position assise provoque la compressiondes organes abdominaux, notamment de la respiration et desorganes de la digestion, entraînant des contractions douloureu-ses dans la région nucale et de la tête, souvent accompagnées dedouleurs diffuses, l’atonie et le cas échéant la réduction de la sangle abdominale, pectorale et des hanches – toutes ces lésionsne sont évitables ni par LE siège ni par LA tenue posturale.Dernièrement, on a reconnu que les conséquences négativespour le corps humain dues à l’assise permanente peuvent uni-

quement être évitées par le changement de position, c’est-à-direpar le mouvement. Le principe fondamental élémentaire pour lacréation d’un siège ergonomique est d’encourager le mouvement.Un bon siège doit encourager une assise dynamique autant quepossible. Les moyens pour atteindre cet objectif (mécaniques debalance ou mécaniques synchrones, par modules actifs de mou-vement, en ouvrant l’angle entre torse et genoux pour obtenirune tenue similaire à l’état debout) sont moins importants que lefait que les employés utilisent cette possibilité de bouger. Le meilleur siège est inutile, tant que l’Homme ne cherche pas lapossibilité de bouger au lieu de chercher LE siège idéal - espérantque celui-ci le protègera des conséquences négatives de l’assise.Le siège doit convenir au plus grand nombre de personnes possible, soit au moins à 90 % de la population. Cela veut direque le siège doit aussi bien convenir à une femme qui mesure1,51 m qu’à un homme de 1,91 m. C’est pourquoi il est importantque les moyens de réglage soient multiples, puisque la taille est enrelation à la longueur du dos ainsi qu’à la longueur des cuisses etdes mollets, etc. Il est indispensable qu’un siège ergonomique detravail corresponde à ces exigences

DL : Le premier principe de base pour l’humain comme l’onconsidèrerait une maison : retenons la nécessité de créer debonnes fondations. Les pieds, les jambes, les cuisses et le bassinles représentent. Il est nécessaire de placer le centre des fonda-tions (le bassin) de telle sorte à ce que sa position repère soit proche de celle que nous avons lorsque nous sommes deboutregardant l’horizon de l’océan (réglage de la hauteur et de l’incli-naison antérieure – naturelle – de l’assise, puis mobilité de cettedernière). Ensuite, il est maintenant indispensable que les

fondations soient le plus possible en mouvement, et même, enmicromouvements. Chacun de ces mouvements engendre un travail musculaire, uneactivation de la circulation sanguine, une variation des pressionssur chacun des disques intervertébraux. Les mouvements peuventpartir du bassin et/ou des pieds, ainsi les chaînes musculaires de lalocomotion ne sont pas inhibées et restent relativement actives.Le second principe de base : la charge représentée par le troncest à placer le plus judicieusement possible en répartissant lepoids du tronc sur l’ensemble du bassin. La projection du centrede gravité du tronc se répercutera alors sur l’arrière et le haut descuisses, libérant le petit bassin des pressions d’appui, tout commele coccyx ou le sacrum (dans le cas fréquent des bassins inverséspréparant le terrain aux hernies discales et aux contraintes respi-ratoires, digestives et circulatoires des membres inférieurs).Le troisième principe de base : du haut du bassin à la base de latête, être soutenu le mieux possible dès que le besoin s’en faitsentir. L’appui sur un dossier, avec appui nuque (pour lesmoments d’écoute, de conversation téléphonique, de réflexion et de pause), réglables en hauteur, inclinaison et épou-sant le dos est tout à fait souhaitable. Le haut du dossierdoit libérer de toutes entravesles bras : l’utilisation d’accou-doirs, réglables en hauteur, enlargeur, en profondeur et enorientation, offre durant leuremploi un allègement du poidsdes bras sur l’ensemble dutronc.

EJ : Y aurait-il des principes de base et des principescomplémentaires, quels seraient-ils ?

TP : Il faut bien comprendre que le corps humain, homme oufemme, a un besoin constant de changement et de mouvement etn’a pas été conçu pour rester assis durant de longues périodes. Il est fait pour marcher, se tenir debout, et uniquement pour decourtes périodes d’assise. Les environnements de travail modernessont le résultat d’une organisation du travail qui ne prenait pasen compte cette nécessité de mouvement. Ainsi, les longuespériodes en position assise qui entraînent des risques de tensions physiques et de fatigue mentale, sont devenues uneréalité. Le défi à relever consiste donc à mettre en place des solutions d’assise qui rappellent au corps son besoin de base,c’est-à-dire pouvoir bouger facilement et adopter une variété depostures tenues peu de temps. Les parties du corps qui jouent unrôle dans la stabilité, telles que par exemple les pieds et la colonnevertébrale doivent avoir une large palette de mouvements possi-bles tout en étant simultanément confortablement soutenus. Celasignifie que la conception et les fonctionnalités du siège doiventpermettre des solutions correspondant à une grande variétéd’objectifs. Il doit également être facile de faire de petites coupu-res pour se « reposer » de la position assise, telles que se mettredebout et marcher. Il n’y a pas de différences fondamentalesentre les principes de base et complémentaires. Le but est dedisposer d’une possibilité globale de variations et de mouve-ments, dans laquelle l’assise n’est qu’une partie de la solutionchoisie pour le poste de travail. De cette manière, on développeet propose toute une variété de solutions d’assise, sur la base de

différentes expériences pratiques, de travail de recherche et decompétences en environnement de travail.

AW : Le meilleur siège peut voir son efficacité limitée par lemanque d’efficacité ergonomique des autres éléments du postede travail. Un siège ergonomique, qui correspond à toutes lesdemandes qui viennent d’être énumérées ci-dessus, n’est pas trèsutile si le plan de travail ne peut pas être adapté à la taille de l’usager ainsi qu’à la taille du siège. Nous savons depuis quelquetemps que l’environnement, comme le bruit, l’illumination ainsique le climat au travail (physique ainsi que social) a un impactpsychique et physique sur l’être humain. De nouvelles étudesmontrent explicitement que de multiples problèmes, dûs à l’orga-nisation du travail ainsi qu’à des problèmes sociaux au travail, semanifestent par des douleurs du système musculo-squelettique.Tout en poursuivant la création d’un siège idéal, il est importantde tenir compte de ces faits.

DL : Plusieurs éléments annexes peuvent avoir un effet positifsur la position de travail :- Les points d’appuis despieds.- Plusieurs hauteurs d’assisefacilement mises en place.- Une mobilité de l’assise danstoutes les directions autour del’axe vertical.- Des mousses à supports decharges étudiés répartiraientplus efficacement les pressions

sous les fesses et les cuisses. Attention à la forme des assises, telles celle dont les côtés sont plus hauts que le centre : ils produisent des rotations internes des cuisses : cela se répercutesur les articulations sacro-iliaques en réduisant la surface decontact des ces articulations, donc en en augmentant la pressionsur une surface plus petite !- Un dossier épousant au plus fin les courbes vertébrales avecsoutien des muscles para vertébraux. Attention au soutien lombaire qui ne porte que sur certaines des vertèbres lombaireset laisse les autres basses dorsales et sacrum en « flottement » !- Une articulation horizontale du dossier à hauteur de la dixièmevertèbre thoracique environ autoriserait un dégagement duplexus solaire, du diaphragme et des pressions du systèmedigestif. - Un système de massage des cuisses à la nuque compenserait

efficacement les incidences néfastes des positions assises prolongées. La « gouvernance » de notre corps est néanmoins unbesoin car, le meilleur siège ne donnera tous ses bénéfices que sinous l’utilisons consciemment.

EJ : En tant que spécialistes, que pensez-vous de l’imagedu public représentant le siège « ergonomique » commeLA solution de la prévention pour une santé préservéeau travail?

TP : Pour arriver à résoudre les problèmes environnementaux,l’employeur devra envisager le travail sous l’angle de l’organisa-tion du travail, des tâches à accomplir et des besoins pour unenvironnement de travail individualisé. Ces problèmes reflètentsouvent les maladies liées au travail et le mauvais usage des siègesde travail dû à de longues périodes assises. La conception du lieude travail, qui inclut le choix d’un siège adapté, ne compenserapas les problèmes liés à une mauvaise organisation du travail.L’employeur a la responsabilité de mettre en place de bonnesconditions de travail alors que l’individu a la responsabilité d’uti-liser cet environnement et notamment son siège, d’une manièrecorrecte. Aux yeux du public, de bonnes conditions d’assise sontclairement liées à l’obtention individuelle de bons résultats au travail, de satisfaction et d’efficacité. La conception d’un bon siègedoit rendre son utilisation transparente : l’utilisateur ne devraitpas avoir à passer du temps pour trouver quel mécanisme ouquelle poignée il doit utiliser pour obtenir une variation physiqueou mentale satisfaisante. L’individu devrait consacrer ses effortssur ses tâches professionnelles et non sur la manière de réglerson siège. Pour cela, une bonne formation et un entraînementsont nécessaires. Pour faire une comparaison : qui s’attendrait à ce qu’un pianiste joue bien sans une entraînement approfondiau piano ?

AW : Au vu de mes réponses précédentes vous ne serez sûrement pas surpris si je vous dis que pour moi le siège ergo-nomique est UNE des conditions pour travailler sainement, maisnon pas LA solution de prévention pour la santé au travail. Il estimportant de tenir compte des chances d’une approche holistiquede l’organisation du travail pour la santé de l’homme. A mon avis nous nous fixons encore trop sur l’équipement (table,siège, écran, logiciel etc.). Il serait beaucoup plus important deviser une bonne solution holistique – en coopération avec toutesles professions : comme les fabricants, les distributeurs, les architectes, les acquéreurs et les responsables des ressourceshumaines. C’est uniquement par l’effort commun de tous lesacteurs que nous pourrons progresser visiblement.

DL : C’est l’image la plus répandue. Peut-être est-ce dû au faitque dans un passé récent, avant l’ère informatique, les salariésbougeaient plus que maintenant, et les sièges signifiaient lestemps de repos. Les fabricants de sièges concentrent leur marke-ting sur cet aspect. Toutefois, j’affirme que le siège ne représentequ’une partie des solutions à mettre en place. En effet, la hauteurdes outils de travail regardés et/ou touchés par les mains ainsique la hauteur du plan de travail sont d’autres éléments indispen-sables à prendre en compte, parmi un grand ensemble de facteurs divers entrant en synergie. Faute de quoi, le meilleursiège ne serait que juste « un peu moins pire » que les siègesd’antan… et son investissement ne serait qu’un coût financiersans retour sur la préservation de la santé et les souffrances, la concentration, l’humeur, l’absentéisme, la productivité, les cotisations sociales… The Chair for Life !

Action and anticipation films and books were the first whereone very often saw for the first time “ screenwalls ” monitoringand guarding sensitive places or in clean rooms data-processingwith their large monitors aligned and piled up looking like a cockpit, where the “ guardian ” of these rooms held the only fullinformation available. But 10 years later, this has become veryoften our daily information routine.

The multi-media that led to the screens multiplication in order toreceive simultaneously various sources of information is not any morethe prerogative of only one person but that of a team. It is all aboutsharing informations, for analyses in real time as the financial roomsof markets of quotation, or the research laboratories require it, thesafety rooms of the air, maritime or railway control towers as well asthe “ urban ” CCTV cameras, or demonstrations, congresses, showrooms or training centers large screens, etc. And as ERGONOMAJournal asserts it : “ behind the machines… the men ”, behind the“ walls of images ” men work, and requires quality screens whoseoptical surface allows a fast and comfortable visualization. About the GfA (German ergonomics Society)The GfA wants to contribute to the dissemination of ergonomic knowledge into the education of all thosewho need these contents either directly (f. e. production and product design, work organization and organ-ization development, labor protection and work design, personnel development and significant fields oflabor policy) or indirectly (f. e. education/training, investment planning, purchase, human resources depart-ments or management functions). Apart from that, ergonomic knowledge and matters of concern should beimparted by schools of all-round-education, but particularly by vocational schools. The GfA supports thetransfer of ergonomic knowledge by the organization of appropriate ‘“platforms” (f. e. congresses, work-

shops, publications, job fairs). The specific task of GfA consists in the promotion of scientific and professional interests ofErgonomics/Human Factors. For that reason GfA fosters the contact with those who are interested in Ergonomics within the German-speaking area as well as at an international level. A thermal and tourist resort located in the heart of the SouthernVosges, Plombières-les-Bains offers a protected environment atan altitude of 450 m. With a mild and temperate climate,

particularly restful and sedative, with pure, oxygenated air, and balsamic essences

extracted from the forests. Far from thestress, noise, urban agitation, in a protected environment, in the middleof a vast forest, brood in a remotevalley. Plombières-les-Bains, well-known since Roman times, is one of

the oldest thermal resorts in Europe.The water, which springs from

10 thermal springs, has extraordinaryproperties :

• Hyperthermal (between 50° and 85°C), which makes the waterthe hottest in Europe, with a flow ofover 400,000 litres per day. • High in rare gases, in particularradon, high in trace elements, in parti-cular fluorine (the richest in Europe). • Low mineralisation, soft, with a pHof around 8.5, rich in silica, with aslight sulphate, bicarbonate, sodium and calcium content. Deep granite in origin, the properties of the Plombières water arevarious, depending on the springs used : • Marked anti-spasm action, analgesic and antalgic action, anti-inflammatory action, muscle relaxant action.• Relaxing effect promoting greater joint flexibility Sedative andvasodilatory action. The study of clinical results observed after thermal cures atPlombières-les-Bains for many years, clearly demonstrates the quality of the water and vindicates the therapeutic referrals of the resort : • Clear decrease in medication consumption (anti-inflammatories,antalgics, anti-spasm and laxative drugs), (Less work interruption), (Fewer hospitalisations). • Clear improvement in symptoms observed, in particular withintestinal function disorders. Improvement in range and flexibilityof painful joints). Thermal treatment of rheumatology at Plombières-les-Bainsand thermal treatments for rheumatology are classified as sedativetreatments (baths, mud, steam), stimulating treatments (shower,massage, mobilisation) and rehabilitation treatments. They canalso be classified as water based treatments (pools, baths, showers), treatments with derived thermal products (mud, steam),and treatments by specialists (massages, rehabilitation). Main indications :Painful vertebral osteo-arthritis, osteo-arthritis of the limbs, the hipor knee, in addition to the normal medical treatment and in the absence of an operation indication in the short term.Tendonopathies : (shoulders, elbows, hips, heels), which havebecome chronic, after-effects of traumas and algodystrophy problems fibromyalgia and other chronic painful conditions. Chronic inflammatory rheumatisms : in particular rheumatisms linked to Crohn’s disease. Post-operation conditions: herniateddisc, osteo-arthritis of the hip, osteo-arthritis of the knee, shoulder.
