About Swedish Choral Society

Choral singing is an integral part of Swedish culture. People have sung in choirs here for generations and Sweden now has an international reputation as a nation of choristers with both breadth and quality. Choirs and vocal ensembles can be heard in churches and concert halls, in workplaces and on public squares, in shopping malls and hospitals, in castles and cottages. It has been estimated that about half a million people in Sweden are regular members of choirs.

Sveriges Körförbund (The Swedish Choral Association) is an organization of mixed choirs, female choirs and male choirs. Theses, in turn, can be further divided into youth choirs, vocal groups, church choirs, chamber choirs, barber shop choirs, gospel choirs, operatic choirs and corporate choirs. The list of new types of choir is constantly growing!

The history of the society goes back to the end of the 19th century when choral singers began to organize themselves into regional and national associations. The men’s choirs formed their own society – Svenska Sångarförbundet – in 1909 and the mixed choirs formed Sveriges Körförbund in 1925. In 1997 the two societies amalgamated. Among the principle aims of the society is that of promoting the musical, cultural and social significance of choral singing.

This CD – The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir Live in Concert – introduces a unique collaboration between Sveriges Körförbund and Naxos. The aim of this collaboration is to document the activities of Swedish choirs in all their breadth and diversity and to make this documentation available in Sweden and the rest of the world.

A succession of recordings are planned over a ten-year period that will illustrate the many different genres and types of choirs represented by the members of the association. The series – Swedish Choral Society – is planned to comprise fifty discs of choral music. This is a very much more extensive documentation of contemporary Swedish choral singing than has ever been attempted before.

This CD has been made with grants from Stiftelsen Framtidens kultur and the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.

Eric Ericson

Eric Ericson

For a majority of choral directors and choristers all over the world, Eric Ericson (b. 1918) is the incontrovertible master in the sphere of choral direction. He has devoted his entire career to choral singing and his work has not only given his own choirs an enviable status but has also been vital in helping to establish choral singing as a culturally elevated form of music-making. And as professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm he fostered a new generation of choral directors.

Eric Ericson initially trained as a church musician at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and, following studies at the Schola Cantorum in Basel and elsewhere, he founded the Chamber Choir – now known as the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir – in 1945. This ensemble has, ever since, been his principal instrument for developing optimal a cappella performance. Parallel with the Chamber Choir he as also worked as conductor and musical director of the Swedish Radio Choir (1951-82) and the male choir Orphei Drängar (1951-91).

Internationally, demands on Eric Ericson have continued to grow. He has guest-conducted all of the really significant choirs in the world including the Netherlands Chamber Choir, Groupe Vocal de France, the BBC Singers, RIAS Kammerchor and the choir of the Wiener Staatsoper. He is particularly appreciated as a teacher and each year gives a number of master classes in various parts of the world. In 1991 Eric Ericson was awarded the Danish Sonning Prize, in 1995 the Music Prize of the Nordic Council and the Swedish Academy’s Royal Prize, and in 1997 he was awarded the Polar Music Prize. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Uppsala in 1983 and by Alberta University

1 Ludvig Norman (1831-1885) Jordens oro viker - Worldly misery shall give away (Johan Olof Wallin) © Gehrmans Musikförlag Ludwig Norman had an important position in the musical life of Sweden during the latter half of the 19th century. As a composer and lecturer at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music he was actively engaged in introducing new operas and orchestral works and he strongly supported his fellow composers, particularly Franz Berwald whom the musical establishment was reluctant to accept as a composer. Norman’s Motet “Jordens oro viker” is scored for double choir and was dedicated to the choir of the Royal Stockholm Opera. It is a setting of a short poem by Johan Olof Wallin (1779-1839) who was not only archbishop and a member of the Swedish Academy but a noted author of hymns. Wallin’s grave can be found in Stockholm’s extensive northern cemetery with the letters J.O.V. inscribed on the headstone. These letters are also the initial letters of the first three words of the poem: Jordens oro viker för den frid, som varar: Grafven allt förliker, Himlen allt förklarar. Worldly misery shall give away to everlasting peace. The grave shall forgive and Heaven all transfigure.

2 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Komm, Jesu, komm! - Come, Jesus, come! BWV 229 © CF Peters Musikverlag There was probably not much discussion in Johann Sebastian Bach’s family as to what profession he should choose when he grew up. Performing and writing music had provided a livelihood for several generations of Bachs. Research indicates that there must have been some seventy organists, cantors and official musicians in the extended Bach family during the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the province of Thüringen the word Bach was synonymous with musician at this time. J.S. Bach wrote six motets, all of them for special occasions. The texts of “Komm, Jesu komm” (Come, Jesus, come) are taken from a contemporary funeral poem. Copies of the motet have

A constant interest in finding new music to perform and new areas in which to work means that, today, the choir’s repertoire is extremely broad, stretching from the Renaissance to the most recent avant-garde compositions. For several generations of Swedish composers the choir has been an ideal ensemble with its typically Scandinavian sound and its extreme virtuosity.

Internationally the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir belongs in the top flight of professional ensembles and it has won various awards including the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis and the Edison Prize as well as no less than three Swedish “Grammis” prizes. Each year the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir undertakes a number of foreign tours and it has performed throughout Europe, the USA and Canada. The choir has made numerous recordings of a cappella repertoire and is represented in the catalogues of a range of record labels.

Besides its busy a cappella activities, the choir also works regularly with the Royal Swedish Philharmonic Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble with which it has toured widely and recorded Bach’s B-minor mass, Christmas Oratorio and the St. John and St. Matthew passions.

In 2007 the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir was awarded the Music Prize of the Nordic Council.

The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir

The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir was founded in 1945 by Eric Ericson and is a legendary and trend-setting ensemble with a worldwide reputation. Constantly invited to perform at the major music festivals and with frequent collaboration with the world’s leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic, the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir is something of a flagship for Swedish choral singing. The choir’s long collaboration with its sister ensemble, the Swedish Radio Choir, is a magnificent example of the impact of the Swedish choral tradition internationally.

been found that suggest an earliest date of 1732, that is from the period when Johann Sebastian was cantor of the Thomas Church in Leipzig. The first part of the motet is for double choir and is a gentle appeal to Jesus to come and fetch this body that has become ever more feeble. In the second part, the poet entrusts his soul into the arms of the Creator, certain that Jesus represents the way to eternal life.

3 Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf – O Saviour, tear open the heavens, Op. 74, No. 2 © Breitkopf & Härtel Johannes Brahms was born and grew up in a poor family of musicians in Hamburg. He learnt to play a variety of instruments at an early age with a view to contributing to the maintenance of the family. In due course he also started composing, giving piano lessons and conducting. From 1863 he was based in Vienna and, by the end of his life, had become an internationally respected figure in the musical world. “O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf” is one of two motets that Brahms wrote in 1878. The text is a prayer to Our Lord that, having waited for spring for so long, He will open the heavens so that light and water once again cause the earth to sprout and the flowers to bloom.

5 Francis Poulenc Exultate Deo © Ed. Salabert The French pianist and composer Francis Poulenc was a member of “Les Six”, a group of composers that included Arthur Honegger. He had a fine ear for melody and his œuvre consists primarily of chamber music, choral music, opera and ballet scores. The two choral pieces on this disc were written in 1941 at a period when Poulenc had rediscovered his Catholic faith and had, for example, undertaken a pilgrimage to the Black Madonna of Rocamadour. The text of “Salve Regina” is one of the four antiphons of the Blessed

Virgin Mary: Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. “Exultate Deo” is taken from the first verses of Psalm 81: Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob. Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery. Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

6 Sven-David Sandström (b. 1942) April och tystnad - April and Silence (Tomas Tranströmer) © KMH-förlaget Art music in Sweden would not be what it is today without the very considerable contribution made by composer Sven-David Sandström. He writes for all sorts of musical combinations, from solo pieces through choral settings to large orchestral works and operas. He frequently chooses to compose round a text. And he has also made an important contribution to musical education, not least in being responsible for initiating the Composition School in Visby. The text of “April och tystnad” comes from a collection entitled “Sorgegondolen” by the noted Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer. The poet finds himself beside a dark ditch, surrounded by yellow spring flowers, but unable to formulate the experience in words.

5 Francis Poulenc Exultate Deo © Ed.

on him (cf. track 10) and he developed a personal twelve-note technique. His setting of “Snabbt jagar stormen våra år” dates from 1953. Karlfeldt’s rhythmically song-like poem from 1929 describes the passing of time, human ageing and our longing for security. The poem was included in the Swedish hymnbook of 1937 for use in private prayer at the turn of the year.

Förvårskväll - Spring Evening (Ragnar Jändel) © Nordiska Musikförlaget

David Wikander was a music teacher, composer and organist in Stockholm. He wrote primarily sacred music for choir, organ and string orchestra but he also composed a number of secular choral pieces in a romantic nationalist, lyrical vein. In “Förvårskväll”, the working-class poet Ragnar Jändel (1895-1935) paints a moving picture of a spring evening in Sweden. Everything is calm and peaceful but, beneath the surface, nature is almost quivering as it waits to burst into bloom.

9 Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960) Aftonen - Evening (Herman Sätherberg) © Gehrmans Musikförlag

Hugo Alfvén was a violinist, conductor and choral director. Together with David Wikander he is responsible for many of the indispensable settings and arrangements of Swedish choral music. “Aftonen” is a text by the physician and poet Herman Sätherberg who gives a moving description of a summer evening by a lake in the forest when the sun is about to set and the only sound that can be heard is the echo of a distant herder’s horn.

0 Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) Friede auf Erden - Peace on Earth (Conrad Ferdinand Meyer) © Schott Music

Arnold Schönberg was an Austrian composer and one of the Second Viennese School at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time he started writing atonal music, that is to say, music without melodic and harmonic tonality. In due course he started writing twelve-note music, music in which all twelve notes of the scale are given equal weight in a specific order.

“Friede auf Erden” was written before Schönberg abandoned tonal music but the piece was considered so advanced that Schönberg was obliged to write instrumental parts as support for the choir so that the work could be performed in public for the first time in 1911. Nowadays the work is performed a cappella, just as Schönberg intended. The text of this piece was originally published in a Swiss Christmas magazine in 1886. It is a poem in four verses that begins by describing the shepherds in attendance on the Virgin Mary and the newborn child while a choir of angels expresses the message of peace on earth. In the second verse things have developed so far that the angelic message of peace risks being drowned by the noise of constant human warfare and bloody conflicts. The third part gives an intimation of a light beyond the constant fighting and the final verse is a magnificent vision of a coming paradise when peace shall reign eternally.

5 Francis Poulenc Exultate Deo © Ed.

The first part of the motet is for double choir and is a gentle appeal to Jesus to come and fetch this body that has become ever more feeble. In the second part, the poet entrusts his soul into the arms of the Creator, certain that Jesus represents the way to eternal life.

This CD has been made with grants from Stiftelsen Framtidens kultur and the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.

in Canada in 1996. Eric Ericson is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and honorary president of the International Federation for Choral Music.

Eric Ericson
