Monthly Board Meetings Each month the board of directors meets to discuss issues, concerns and the normal day to day activities of Erie Village. The meetings are held on the third Monday of the month beginning at 6:30pm at our office in the basement of the medical center next to DOOW Lumber. All residents are welcome to at-tend.

If you have an issue that you would like to discuss with the board, we ask that you submit it in writing ahead of time so that it can be added to the agenda.

Treasurers Report

Ed Bangel reviewed the financial statements for the 6 months ended June30th 2009. The Board reviewed an analysis prepared by Ed of general maintenance ex-penses identifying the unit, nature of the maintenance item and cost.

Board Highlights July 20,2009 Meeting Managers Report

Smoke and fire detector heads need to be replaced every ten years. There are 46 units needing replacement of some or all of the detectors. Time Warner has blocked out the week of September 14, 2009 to perform these replacements. Letters will be sent out in the next couple of week to the owner asking them to select a day and time for the work.

Smoke detector heads need to be inspected every 3 years. We have conducted more than 100 inspections so far this year. Wynn Collins is contacting the remaining 40 that need to be inspected.

The snow plow damage repair has finally been completed for this season.

Painting should be finished within the next couple of weeks.

Wynn also reported on the probable cause and remedia-tion of major repairs and maintenance items performed during the month.

Environmental Committee

As reported in last month’s newsletter, the first water testing for the big lake was made. The test results were excellent, well within the guidelines set by the State of New York for swimming areas.

Other Committee Reports

Street Lighting, Rubbish Removal, Snow Removal, Ar-chitectural, Covenants and Election Committees.

All gave the Board brief updates as to continuing issues relating to activities. There were no new issues to re-port at this time.

Please Drive Slowly in Village

There have been a number of complaints received about cars driving too fast thru the village. With the number of walkers, run-ners and bikers, we ask that you take extra care when driving thru Erie Village.

Highlights Continued

Grounds Maintenance

Bart Solenthaler gave an update on emerging tree dis-ease issues and the steps we are taking to control these issues.

At the last Board meeting it was decided to rotate the staging of lawn maintenance equipment among 4 desig-nated areas throughout the village. Board members ob-served the use of these areas over the past few weeks. They expressed their concern that the areas other than the area on Summerhaven by Oarlock were hazardous in part due to the size and number of pieces of equipment. The Board voted to revert to using the area on Summer-haven by Oarklock as the designated staging area. Resi-dents near this area will be advised of the Board’s deci-sion.

Trimming small trees, shrubs and bushes was completed by the end of July. There are a few large dead trees that need to be removed. Bart has a list of these trees. They will be removed in conjunction with our large tree trim-ming schedule scheduled for late September or early October.

General

We have received completed survey forms asking for contact information as well as additional information regarding units currently being rented in Erie Village from 50% of our residents. If you have not completed the form, we would appreciate you doing so as soon as pos-sible. The form will be available on our website and will also be included in the next newsletter.

Despite the rainy weather, most of our major projects for the summer are right on schedule. We continue to ad-dress residents’ concerns and attempt to be proactive in tackling some projects before they can develop into a bigger problem. We ask for your patience if there is any inconvenience to you while we work.

The grounds are in beautiful condition due to the con-tinuing efforts of our grounds maintenance contractor and the efforts of Bart Solenthaler who coordinates this work.

Common garden areas continue to flourish due to the efforts of Barb Whitney and her committee also!

Safety Notice Reminder

As published in the Manager’s report, we have a continuing program of inspecting and maintaining the smoke detectors that are a vital component of the Erie Village provided fire monitoring system in your home. The units are inspected on a scheduled basis every three years and each year cer-tain units that have reached the end of their 10 year service period are replaced.

These actions are mandated by the fire codes. If you re-ceive a letter requesting an appointment to replace your smoke detectors, or inspect them, please respond at your earliest convenience. This service is provided at no cost to the homeowner. We will try and schedule the work at a con-venient time for you. Failure to cooperate with this program not only places your home in jeopardy, but the adjoining units as well. It could also have an impact on your personal homeowners insurance.

Parking In Erie Village

There have been some recent issues with parking in the village expressed by homeowners. We’d like to remind resi-dents that there are published rules in our resident’s guide.

Each unit has minimally, two spaces available for parking. The primary spot is the garage with the driveway as the sec-ondary. In some areas there is parking available for the use of guests. Please do not use these areas as your personal parking space. Boats, trailers or unregistered vehicles are not permitted in these areas or any other areas of the Vil-lage. Please respect your neighbors and do not block ac-cess to or egress from their driveways.

On street parking is prohibited year round, as access is needed for service and emergency vehicles. This complies with the regulations within the Town of Manlius and adopted by the EVHOA in October 1999. It is your responsi-bility to direct parking for your visitors.

Whenever possible, please try to resolve parking issues with your neighbors. If a resolution cannot be reached or either party chooses not to make such a complaint to the violator, then complaints should be forwarded in writing to the EVHOA Board of Directors. A warning sticker affixed to the windshield of the vehicle will notify the violator of the parking violation. The make, model and plate number will be logged. If the vehi-cle is not legally parked within 24 hours the vehicle will be towed at the owner’s expense. The owner can ascertain the towing location by contacting the Town of Manlius Police De-partment.

Recycling Information

Breaking a fluorescent bulb releases harmful mercury vapors, so it is important to properly dispose of these types of bulbs. They should never go in your trash. OCRRA has teamed up with 14 ACE and True Value Hardware Stores to provide a free drop-off point for burned out fluorescents. Residents now have an earth friendly way for safe disposal of three types of fluorescent lights commonly found in their home. 4-foot fluorescent tubes (no 8-footers please), compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), U-shaped fluorescents. OCRRA will continue to accept all other residential fluorescent bulbs at any one of their three household hazardous days. The drop-off program is for residents only.

Paper, whether it is office paper, newspaper or cardboard, is the single most recycled item in our homes and businesses. When you put paper in your blue bin at home, it gets sorted and then brought to a paper mill, such as Solvay Paperboard, which is a local company. There it is mixed with water and chemicals in a large pulping machine. In time, the cardboard dissolves into liquid mixture or “slurry”. This slurry is pumped onto a conveyor belt that passes through a complex drying system. Water is evaporated out of the slurry and you are left with a roll of dry paper.

What goes into your blue bin can be transformed into many different things; a pizza box delivered to your door, tissue paper for wrapping gifts, or even stationary for writing letters. Add life to a valuable resource: recycle your paper.

Another option for recycling of paper—specifically your personal and confidential documents that you may no longer need. Consider the annual OCRRA Shred-O-Rama. This year’s event is being held at Alliance Bank Stadium on October 17th 2009, from 8am—Noon. This event is for residents only—no businesses please.

The next Household Hazardous Waste Day will be held on October 3rd from 8am—noon. Please contact OCRRA in advance to register at 453-2866.

Extra blue bins can be obtained at the Town of Manlius Highway Department located on Clemons Rd. off Rt. 290.

If you have any other recycling questions or concerns, you can contact OCRRA at 453-2866 or check out their website at www.ocrra.org.
