Super S1J We are excited to be learning lots of interesting things in Term 4 and looking forward to
participating in all the end-of-year events. We have had a fun time learning about our
new Science Unit Machine Makers, learning about forces and simple machines. S1J will
be designing and making some very interesting machines this term. Keep an eye out to see their wonderful work.
We were lucky enough to visit Healthy Harold last week. We got to learn about how to
be sensible around medicines and how to look after our bodies by eating healthy food.
We have also been experimenting with different materials in art- using charcoal to
sketch a penny farthing bike and a modern bicycle. We are learning about how things
have changed over time in History.

Stars of the Week
This week I was visited by some very talented
students from S1J who shared a variety of
work with me.
This term, Mrs Conroy and her students are
learning all about ‘Machines’ as part of their
Science unit. They’ve also been learning about
persuasive texts and how they can be used to
convince the reader to support a certain issue
or topic.
Well done to the following students who were
chosen to show-off their work this week -
Jonah V-N and Leila R: these students
have been working on their persuasive
writing skills by developing convincing
arguments and learning about different
forms of persuasive texts. Jonah tried to
convince me that, ‘Students need more
playtime because kids come in from play
and need more time to eat their food.’
Leila presented a shopping brochure
advertising Coles Minis. She told me that,
‘We should collect Coles Minis because they
are fun to play with and are also free!’
Great work, guys!
George B has a fantastic understanding of
fractions and explained to me the concept
of ‘equivalent fractions’ by designing a
Fraction Wall. He confidently told me that 2
x halves, 4 x quarters, 8 x eighths and 10 x
tenths are all equal to one whole.
Jackson S and Skyla E both shared
some wonderful artwork with me.
Jackson’s artwork was inspired by the
Aboriginal Dreamtime story, ‘No Way
Yirrikipayi!’ He designed a painting of a
snake using water colours and crayons.
Skyla’s artwork was a charcoal sketch
of two bicycles. After researching how
machines have changed overtime, as
part of their Science unit, Skyla used
images from the internet to complete
her drawings.
Fantastic work, S1J!

Congratulations to the following students who
have recently received a ‘Personal Best Award’
for achieving one of their personal goals:
KA – Ivy S, Elsie B, Adele M and Elaina S.
S3K – Hayden B (x2), Samuel O, Tom R
(x2), Jazaya B (x2), Isaac H, Sonny B,
James B and Shanon H.
Principal’s Puzzle
Congratulations to Lachlan H (S3S) who
correctly solved last week’s Principal’s Puzzle.
The correct answer was, ‘mushroom’, however
Lachlan also came up with another great
answer, ‘chatroom’.
Use creative thinking to solve this week’s
brainteaser. The first student with the correct
answer written down next Monday can come
and claim their prize!
Q: What object is thrown out when you want to
use it, but taken in when you don't want to use
it?
Invictus Games Excursion
What an amazing day the students and staff
had from classes S1/2K, S2A and S2/3L. The
atmosphere was electric, the war cries
memorable and the athletes were inspirational!
It was a real privilege to travel to the Sydney
Aquatic Centre (Olympic Park) earlier this week
to watch one of our own parents, Luke Hill,
compete in the Invictus Games. Luke was
competing in the swimming and we couldn’t be
more proud of his achievements – he finished
3rd in his heat for the 50m freestyle, and 2nd in
his races for the 50m breastroke, 50m
backstroke and 100m freestyle. Luke qualified
for the finals for each of these events and we
are pleased to announce that he received a
bronze medal for the 50m breastroke –
congratulations Luke!
I would like to especially thank Mrs Lanning
for organising this amazing adventure for the
students and staff at Erina Heights PS – it is a
‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity! My thanks also
to our supervising teachers Mrs Bennett, Mrs
Battiston and Amanda Hampson who
ensured a safe and enjoyable excursion was
had by all students.
Foyer Display – S1/2K
Take a look at this awesome artwork on
display in the front foyer! S1F are certainly a
talented bunch of artists. After watching the
video, ‘Soar’, S1F created these plane artworks.
As part of this year’s Gulang Fest activities the
students also completed an Aboriginal painting.
Congratulations to Lara Mc, Will B, Ethan R
and Meeka G who are proudly exhibiting their
masterpieces!

between parents and their children. Central

to enrich our families lives on the Central Coast.

School Leadership – Student Parliament
It is that time of year when we are thinking
about school leaders for 2019. Year 5 students,
and the staff at Erina Heights PS, are currently
submitting nominations for consideration as a
student leader in the upcoming school year.
Along with the honour of being elected as a
Student Parliamentarian, there is also added
responsibility as they endeavour to balance
their new leadership roles with their academic,
extracurricular and social activities.
Erina Heights PS School Parliament is a very
prestigious opportunity for our Year 6 students
to extend their leadership abilities, as it is the
forum that supports the students’ ‘voice’ in the
decision-making processes of the school.
Nominees, and the elected School Leaders,
must always display appropriate behaviour in
accordance with the school’s values, Wellbeing
Policy and the NSW Department of Education’s
‘Behavior Code for Students’. I would like to
wish all Year 5 students who are eligible for
nomination as a member of the 2019 Student
Leadership Team all the very best in the coming
weeks.
Sun Safety for Students
As we head into the warmer months, I would
like to remind all students about the importance
of SUN SAFETY. Each public school in NSW has
a responsibility to provide a safe environment
for students and staff and this includes
providing adequate protection from the
sun. At Erina Heights PS, we take sun safety
seriously and implement a range of strategies
to support school environments that protect our
students.
All students are expected to wear sun-safe
hats during break times, PE lessons and during
outside sport. Teachers will be vigilant in
applying our sun-safe policy and students
without hats will be directed to play under the
COLA where it is shaded and provides
protection from the dangerous UV rays.
Teachers, parents, carers and visitors to the
school all have a role to play in supporting
students to understand why sun safety is
important and to take action to protect
themselves. These include, but are not limited
to:
wearing sun-safe hats, clothing and
sunglasses.
seeking shade during peak ultra violet
radiation (UVR) times during the school
day.
wearing SPF 30+ (or higher) broad-
spectrum and water-resistant sunscreen.
Please help by playing an active role in getting
the sun-safe message across to your children,
by reminding them to bring a sun-safe hat each
and every day and ensuring that their hats are
clearly labelled with their name so we can
return them as soon as possible, if misplaced!

newsletter, or you may wish to seek additional

School Planning – 2019
We are continuing our organisation for the
2019 school year. At this stage we anticipate
that we will have an enrolment of 330
students to start the new school year with 13
classes to be established if enrolment figures
remain the same. It is important for parents
and carers to inform our school office in writing
or by phone (4367 7608) should their child not
be continuing at Erina Heights PS in 2019.
Similarly, if you are aware of any students
moving into our area who will be attending our
school in 2019 please ask the families to make
contact with the school and commence the
enrolment process.
As you may be aware, forming classes,
arranging teams and deciding upon the finer
details of a new school year is always quite
challenging. Early notification of students who
are leaving our school very much helps our
organisation and assists with the smooth
transition into our new classes. Please
remember, if you have any concerns pertaining
to your child’s class placement next year,
please take the time to talk to your child’s class
teacher early this term and jot your concerns
down in writing so we can ensure we are
addressing any requests when classes are being
established.
I must stress, that any parents who request
specific teachers will be left disappointed,
however, I am happy for parents to outline
aspects of their child’s learning and
development that may need special
consideration when forming class compositions,
which may impact upon their academic, social
or emotional wellbeing.
Sporting News
Just a friendly reminder that all students in
grades K-2 have the opportunity to participate
in the ‘Sport in Schools’ program this term.
The cost of the program is $35 per student –
which has been subsidised by the school. All
students in grades K-2 will need to wear their
sports uniform on Thursdays during Term 4.
