In Flanders' fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high,

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies

grow In Flanders' Fields.

President’s Message:

November 2018 Upcoming Events We invite all to join us for a fun Family Halloween Activity from four to six p.m.

on Saturday, October 27.

On Saturday, November 3 the 34th Annual Ermineskin Community Craft Fair takes place. Last year over a 1,000 people dropped by to look at fabulous handmade

crafts from 50 exhibitors and then have some fresh homemade soup and cake.

Entry is by donation.

Crime In Our Neighbourhood Crime continues to be a concern in our neighbourhood. From July 13 to October

10 there were 50 incidents of crime.

As a Board we have reached out to the Edmonton Police Service and we will work with our Neighbourhood Resource Office to see what we can do to make our

neighbourhood a safer place to live.

The Edmonton Police Service has information on Home and Property Safety on their website. Follow this link to get helpful tips.

http://www.edmontonpolice.ca/CrimePrevention/HomePropertySafety.aspx.

We are grateful to members of the community who have started posting, on the Ermineskin Community League Facebook Page, pictures of property that has been

abandoned on greenbelts and parks. Hopefully the rightful owners are reunited with their belongings.

Please reach out to your neighbours and get to know them. Your personal safety

is more important than a possible stolen item, so please, if you think something or someone is suspicious take a photo and follow the Edmonton Police Services

advice.

Since this is the last newsletter for this year, the Board wishes everyone a happy

Holiday season, keep warm, skate, visit family and friends get out and enjoy the winter!

Respectfully submitted—Kent McMullin, President, ECL

WHY DO I VOLUNTEER?

Part 6 in a Series on Community Involvement

Communities are the places where young families grow roots, where we cultivate friendships, where families of all types and ages live side-by-side, and where we support one another through good times and hard times. They are where we live.

As a family we have enjoyed many of the community sports programmes, socials for both families and adults, playschool, skating, car rallies, cooking lessons, dance lessons, arts and crafts work-shops, fundraisers (bingos and casinos), bottle drives, Community celebrations, and Craft Fairs.

We have welcomed new neighbours and said goodbye to good friends. We have enjoyed many of the benefits of the community and the Ermineskin Community League and all of the volunteers' efforts over the 30+ years we have been here.

Having served on the Playschool Executive as well as the ECL Board in several different capacities, it comes as no surprise that we continue to support the ECL and I encourage you to grow your community roots through volunteering with the ECL.

You will form new friendships, gain experience, and ensure a strong community for the next generation.

Cheers,

Nancy Field

That says everything that needs to be said! Thank–you Nancy for all you have done, and still do!

ERMINESKIN ENLIGHTENER NOVEMBER 2018

Once again Ermineskin Community League will be accepting

donations of gently used, clean warm weather clothing for

those less fortunate.

Winter is hard for those who don’t have the basics.

There will be a box at the Community League office for donations and these

will be taken on a regular basis to Bissell Center.

Over the summer we had some work done to freshen our hall!

We want to thank Shauna Thomas for her painting skills,

Alberta Hardwood for the sanding and refinishing of the hall floor and

AMC Building Services for the strip and refinish on the tile floors.

As you use the hall, please help us keep the hall clean by removing your footwear

at the door .

Hanukkah

For eight days each No-

vember or December,

Jews light a special can-

dleholder called

a menorah.

They do it to remember an ancient

miracle in which one day's worth of oil

burned for eight days in their temple.

On Hanukkah, many Jews

also eat special potato pan-

cakes called latkes, sing

songs, and spin a top called a

dreidel to win chocolate

St. Lucia Day

To honor this third-century saint

on December 13, many girls in

Sweden dress up as "Lucia

brides" in long white gowns with

red sashes, and a wreath of

burning candles on their heads.

They wake up their families by

singing songs

and bringing

them coffee

and twisted

saffron buns

called "Lucia

cats."

Why are snow angels important?

More than 140,000 seniors aged 55 and over live in Edmonton. Approximately

75% of seniors over 65 live in their own homes. As well, approximately 5% of

the overall population aged 15 and older has severe or very severe disabilities.

For these people, shoveling snow can be difficult or even dangerous.

They also help seniors and persons with disabilities meet their responsibility to

remove snow and ice from their sidewalks as stipulated under the Community

Standards Bylaw #14600. The City of Edmonton re-quires this to be completed within 48 hours of

the snowfall. Call the office with the name of YOUR SNOW ANGEL!! (780-438-6623) or

call us if you need one!

Christmas

People celebrate this Christian holiday by

going to church, giving gifts, and sharing

the day with their families. In some parts of

Europe, "star singers" go caroling — singing

special Christmas songs — as they walk be-

hind a huge star on a pole.

Kwanzaa, which

means "First Fruits,"

is based on ancient

African harvest

festivals and

celebrates ideals such as family life

and unity. During this spiritual

holiday, celebrated from December

26 to January 1, millions of African

Americans dress in special clothes,

decorate their homes with fruits and

called a kinara.

New Year

In Ecuador, families dress a straw man in old clothes on December

31. The straw man represents the old year. The family members

make a will for the straw man that lists all of their faults. At

midnight, they burn the straw man, in hopes that their faults will

disappear with him.
