Staying active in a difficult market

The 2008 comprehensive income for the Group was DKK -24.6 million compared to DKK 11.0 million in 2007.

The parent company achieved a comprehensive income of DKK -1.5 million as compared to 2007, where the comprehensive in-come was DKK 19.8 million.

The Company has reduced interest carrying depts with DKK 90.7 million in 2008, so that it constitutes a total of DKK 261.4 million compared to DKK 352.1 million in 2007.

The Consulting segment contributed with a comprehensive in-come of DKK 3.1 million. Technical Management contributed with a comprehensive income of DKK 4.5 million, while the Chartering segment achieved a comprehensive income of DKK 6.3 million. In 2008, the growth in the three segments exceeded an impres-sive 100% when compared to 2007.

The results of the vessels were unsatisctory with a comprehen-sive income of DKK -38.2 million compared to a 2007 result of DKK 7.8 million. The development was primarily caused by a slow down in the container market, especially in Q4 2008. De-spite a continued good level of chartering agreements, several

charterers suffered from the finance crisis and had problems with achieving the necessary payment guarantees. This reduced the chartering rates with 15-20%. 2009 will also be a difficult year, but the Company expects 2010 to show a positive comprehen-sive income.

Financial results of 2008

There is no doubt that the present situation in the market and the financial crisis has had an effect also on ERRIA.

2009 is expected to be a difficult year, and the general state of the market and the world economy will affect the income. How-ever, ERRIA is making many efforts in order to streamline the

company and gain market shares instead of hiding our head in the sand.

As a continued effort to modernise and optimize the fleet, unprof-itable tonnage will be disposed of during the coming years, and we expect 2010 to show a positive income. The present market situation with vessels being taken out of service makes it unre-alistic to expect profits from the sale of vessels in line with what we have seen in the past years. In addition to this there is some uncertainty as to the container freight rates, the US Dollar ex-change rate, and the fuel price.

In order to support the future need for liquidity, the board of Erria A/S has made a proposal to the general assembly of issuing bonds to the amount of DKK 20 million with confirmed agreement from the main investors. This agreement, supported by a long-term bank financing agreement, ensures the necessary financing for the company in order to survive the consolidation that will inevitably take place in the shipping market in the coming years.

On the positive side, we have 9 new vessels in commercial man-agement that will positively affect the 2009/2010 results, and we have taken over the management of 8 tugs and barges from Vattenfall that will contribute already in 2009. Also the consulting division and sale of vessels in Asia is progressing well, which you can read more about in this issue of ERRIA News.

When you have to act fast it is good to have the possibility to make use of a long-standing and trusting cooperation.

Within a very short time, Vattenfall Trading Services concluded the purchase of the major part of the tonnage from the bankrupt Britannia Bulk DK A/S in Svendborg, and as a result of construc-tive negotiations between Vattenfall and ERRIA, Erria A/S, on

Monday 8 December, took over the technical management of the 3 tugs and the 4 barges that on a daily basis ship coal from Rus-sia and the Baltic States to harbours in the Baltic Sea and the German North Sea coast.

The mission was clear and ”simple”: ”Man the 3 tugs and make them and the barges ready to sail”. The former crew members, a total of 36 seafarers, were all of-fered employment in Erria A/S and we are happy that most of them accepted, but new crew members have also joined us. The job was accomplished, the tugs and the barges are sailing. But it is not until now that the actual job begins, which is to make these vessels operate in the same manner as the rest of the fleet and to ensure that the crew members feel that they are a welcome and well-integrated part of ERRIA. This is the basis for ensuring that the vessels and barges will operate in many years to come.

We are convinced that in a close and constructive cooperation with the office staff, the crews will positively contribute to ensur-ing that we all work together towards the same goal. At the end of April, we will have our first Company meeting, and on that oc-casion we look very much forward to presenting the Company and – not least – to meeting our many new colleagues.

We welcome all new crew members on the VT Electron, the VT Neutron and the VT Proton to ERRIA and look forward to a long-standing cooperation.

Over the past two years Ibex Maritime Ltd. has been involved in contracting:

in the Far East, such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Even in the pressured economic situation work con-tinues on a number of projects.

AHTS Vessel for Middle Eastern Buyer

Millions of cubic metres of sediment are to be removed from the 27 km of access channel, dock and basins at the Port of Beira in Mozambique.

Mozambique has only three international ports, at Maputo, at Beira and at Nacala on its almost 3,000 km coastline. In addition to the Mozambican transportation needs, the Beria port serves the neighbouring landlocked countries of Malawi, Zambia, Zim-babwe, Botswana and Swaziland.

Access to the Beira port is made through a 200 metre wide ac-cess channel. After rehabilitation of the channel in the late 1990s, the port of Beira went for about 10 years without maintenance dredging, due to the country’s inability to pay for this work. As a result 2.5 million tonnes of sediment is washed into the harbour every year from the Pungue and Buzi rivers. This has drastically cut the size of ship that can enter the port. The port was designed to receive ships of up to 30,000 tonnes, but currently only ships of 15,000 tonnes can enter. Users of the port of Beira are seeking alternative ports because the silting of the entrance channel has made access to the port increasingly difficult.

EMODRAGA, Mozambique’s state-owned dredging company, has two dredges “Alcontara Santos” and “Aruangwa”, each with the capacity to hold 1,000 cubic metres of sediment in its hold. Those two vessels are only able to keep the channel accessible for small ships with a draft of about 6 metres. Beira port needs to be fully operational with a draft of at least 9 metres, if it is to handle the millions of tonnes of coal from Tete province, which in the near future will be exported every year.

DANIDA will fund a Tied Mixed Credit for acquisition of a seago-ing dredger and refurbishment of four service vessels.

ERRIA Consulting and IHC have formed a joint-venture partner-ship. IHC is one of the world’s largest dredging companies with own shipyard in Rotterdam.

In the middle of February it was announced that two joint-venture partnerships have been prequalified to bid for the project. Togeth-er with a competitor we were invited to meetings in Maputo and site inspection in the port of Beira. In Maputo there were meet-ings with CFM, Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique,

(Mozambique’s port and railway authorities), Emodrago, Mozam-bique’s state-owned dredging company, SAFMAR, the national maritime safety administration, and INAHINA, the national insti-tute for hydrographs and safety of navigation. The purpose of the meetings in Maputo was to give overall information and require-ments to the project. The main goal of the new dredger is that it must be able to remove 2.5 million tonnes of sediment per year.

In Beira, inspection of the four service vessels, which are to be refurbished, took place. The vessels are two tug boats built at Morsø Shipyard, one small tug boat and a pilot vessel. The two tug boats “Pungue” and “Buzi” need a general overhaul including new auxiliary engines, new navigation equipment and replacement of the entire accommodation. The third tug boat ”Chire” is smaller than “Pungue” and “Buzi” and too small as a tug boat. Therefore, it is the intention to convert the boat into a survey vessel for dredging operation. The fourth vessel which is to be refurbished is a fast going pilot vessel. Due to an accident there was fire in the engine room, and both main engine and the entire accommodation need to be renewed.

DredgingDredging is a very specialized activity. A trailing suction hop-per dredger trails its suction pipe when working, and loads the dredge spoil into a hopper in the vessel. It may be compared with a giant vacuum cleaner.

In order to start dredging, the ship reduces its speed to some 1 or 2 knots and then lowers the suction pipes all the way to the seabed. Sand pumps transfer the sand dredged up by the suc-tion head into the hopper. The excess water is drained off via the overflow pipes. When the hopper is filled with slurry, the dredger stops dredging and goes to a dump site and empties its hopper by splitting the two halves of their hulls on giant hinges. It takes around one hour to fill the vessel with sediment.

Having inspected the three tug boats and the pilot vessel, and after negotiations with CFM/Emodraga about their requirements for the new dredger, we will, together with our partner ICH, make an estimate for the costs of building a dredger and refurbishing of the four service vessels.

Kaare Vagner visited Latin America and the recently established ERRIA LATINOAMERICA S.A. in Caracas, Venezuela. The com-pany will be the new bridgehead of ERRIA focused on new build-ing consultancy.

The services are particularly aimed at the Venezuelan domestic trade and the Caribbean islands. Venezuela’s fleet of merchant vessels is relatively small in number, and therefore the services are aimed at the fleet of many smaller dry cargo and tank ves-sels.

It was a pleasure to meet Mr. Joel Naranjo owner of Marchart Shipping and shareholder in ERRIA LATINOAMERICA S.A. and Mr. Julio Yanes, General Manager, ERRIA LATINOAMERICA S.A., who was formerly employed with Maersk Venezuela.

Search and rescue operation by M/T ERRIA HELEN

On the night between December 13 and 14, 2008, M/T ERRIA HELEN was approaching the port of loading - Marsa El Brega in Libya. The weather near the coast was as usual warm and the sea calm. Our vessel was only a few miles from the port and was approaching to anchorage. All in all a usual situation, but that was only the start of a great adventure.

At the time 0350 all crew members, except those on watch, were tightly asleep, but suddenly the bridge receives a MAY DAY alert. At 0353 the captain sounds the vessels general alarm and by public address speaks “Attention! Man Over Board alarm!” Dur-ing the time when the alarm was sounded, the vessel changes the course in the direction of the vessel in distress.

Regardless of the fact that it was night, it took only a few minutes before all crew members of M/T ERRIA HELEN were ready and stand-by according to muster list. Looking out across the sea we quickly saw some light near the vessel in distress - the light from the rescue boat with all crew members onboard.

At 0425, the rescue boat with 7 persons is on the starboard side of M/T ERRIA HELEN, and one by one, all are brought on board and seated in the mess room. Our first impression was of 7 peo-ple in shock, some did not even understand what was going on. Within a short time, the cook and the messman of M/T ERRIA HELEN provided hot tea, coffee and some food, and the bosun and crew ratings brought dry clothes.

Of course, everyone on M/T ERRIA HELEN wanted to know what had happened, but nobody could tell anything, because the dis-tressed crew did not know anything either.

At 0505, the tug boat “Benghazi” was alongside ERRIA HELEN, and all crew members were lowered to the tug boat one by one, using safety belts. Everyone of them were appreciative saying “Thank You”, and one of them even wrote down the name of our vessel. At 0520, all crew members from the vessel in distress were on board the tug boat, and all united in greeting us “thank You” before proceeding to shore. At this time M/T ERRIA HELEN finally proceeded to anchorage.

So, that is what our little adventure looked like. All in all the crew of M/T ERRIA HELEN can say that “We are not heroes, we are responsible seaman.”

On March 24, ERRIA Crew Manager Kirsten Hansen, passed a significant milestone when she celebrated her 50-year birthday.

That is not, however, a subject of much concern for her. Being a keen and very active athlete she feels fit for fight and full of en-ergy to handle her daily tasks in the Company. And these tasks no doubt require that she is able to keep her head cold and that she manages to stay focused when the jigsaw-puzzle of the crew members has to come together to ensure that the right man is on the right vessels at the right time. This task is handled in co- operation between Kirsten and the Company’s agents around the world, and further to this she is also in charge of ensuring that the certifications of the crews are currently updated.

Kirsten has been working with ERRIA for about 3 years. She came to the Company from a similar position in the Dampskibs-selskabet NORDEN, a position she took over in June 1985 when she disembarked to work in a land-based job after having sailed as a radio officer in the NORDEN for a number of years.

”I am really pleased with working at ERRIA, not least due to the fact that the Company is not too big – which means that every-body know each other. And that does not only involve my land-based colleagues, but also the sailing staff whom I have come to know really well in connection with our current contact when they are at sea as well as when they are at home. It was a little like coming home when I started working here – a kind of family feeling, you may say. I have very nice colleagues, all of them kind and pleasant people, and we are happy that we also have a good managing director who very much contributes to maintain-ing the informal atmosphere that is characteristic of our daily way of communicating – also when the board is visiting the office”.

”The big challenge of my daily work is, of course, to make eve-rything run smoothly and, not least important, to ensure that the employees choose to stay in the Company. In all lines of busi-ness it has for some time now been highly tempting for many em-ployees to seek new pastures where conditions perhaps seemed more interesting – and, of course, it is frustrating when that hap-pens, but we usually find a way of solving the problems, not least

thanks to the fact that everybody is very helpful and prepared to make things work. I am also pleased with our office facilities with the open-plan office that makes it possible to be up-dated on what is going on, who is presently at the office etc. And the loca-tion close to the airport makes it easy to arrange brief, informal visits from e.g. crew members on their way out or home. I think that I have a really nice workplace with a constant high level of activity – and it is situated close to where I live.”

Her leisure time is mainly spent on sports activities, from spin-ning to football and – not least – handball where Kirsten is in charge of the handball section of the Danish Shipowners’ As-sociation’s club and holds the position of cashier in the Valby I.F. And although she travelled extensively all over the world when working as a radio officer there are still new adventures to tempt her – like e.g. her latest trips to the Philippines and Malaysia.

The home base furthermore includes two wonderful teenage daughters who give Kirsten a good basis for keeping up with the pleasures and sorrows of young people today. Both girls attend upper secondary school so Kirsten has actually no time to worry about the subject of “age”.

The birthday was celebrated in the appropriate manner with an open-house arrangement for friends, family and colleagues.

After a tough starting up/working period in Ghana, ERRIA Con-sulting, together with our partner GRONTMIJ/Carl-Bro, on June 15, 2008 delivered the detailed draft Feasibility Study Report for the entire LAKE VOLTA FERRY PROJECT including the 5 spe-cific sub-projects:

Design of new RO-RO ferries1. Rehabilitation of the floating dock, positioned in Akosombo 2. on the southern part of Lake VoltaRehabilitation of the port facilities including necessary 3. dredgingRehabilitation of the landing facilities4. Clearing of the waterway for safe around the clock opera-5. tion

The final Feasibility Study Report was approved in the autumn of 2008.

Since then, a lot of verifications have taken place with local stakeholders and other parties involved, and for the ferries and the floating dock, for which ERRIA Consulting is responsible, the following subjects have been discussed and clarified:

One or 2 ferries• Actual size of ferries• Double/single ended operation• Maneuverability of the ferry• Propulsion machinery• Berthing/port facilities• Rules & Regulations to be complied with•

Based on this, ERRIA and our partner have started up detailed design works, preparation of Building Specifications and other technical documentation works, which has involved Naval Archi-tect Ricky Holm Larsen, Senior Naval Architect Vagn Skaarup Christensen and Director Torben Ravn – all part of the ERRIA Consulting team/office in Copenhagen.

Due to the sallow draft at the landing/port facilities, and the im-portance of avoiding grounding damage, especially the main propulsion system for the new ferries has been investigated in detail, and after serious technical evaluations, it has been de-cided to use retractable azimuth thrusters, turning 360 degrees. Among other works, the following have further been prepared and presented:

The strategy of being a “Global one stop shop for the maritime World” starts to pay off and seems to be the right strategy, mean-ing that today ERRIA can offer all the different aspect of the global shipping market to our in-house as well as to our exter-nal customers, including Commercial management of vessels, Project and planning of conversion of all kinds of vessels, Techni-cal management at a high level, Vetting and QA, and Sale and purchase of vessels

This all together will most probably be one of the major benefits in the shipping market as several customers first of all need to have one partner that they can count on and, secondly, need to have a partner that can act fast and be reliable. The above was demonstrated in the case of the Ingrid Jakobsen that has been converted from a traditional chemical tanker to a bunker tanker able to make Ship-to-Ship transfer.

IBEX Maritime had the connection and needed a vessel that could fulfil the charter’s requirements. On February 1, 2009, IBEX Maritime contacted ERRIA Consulting in order to have some sug-gestions for the conversion and to know whether the conversion could be carried out within a very short time limit. ERRIA Consult-ing presented a solution, and in cooperation with ERRIA Techni-cal and Dano this was indicated to the charter. He was interested in the vessel and the solution, and therefore wanted to inspect the vessel as a Pre-on-hire inspection.

On February 15 and 16, the representative from the charter, Mr. J.F. Scott Phillips, inspected the vessel in Bilbao in Spain, together with the representative from Erria Technical, Mr. Carl Peter Ipsen, and the representative from Consulting, Mr. Jørgen Thuesen, in order to go through the vessel in general and to dis-cuss the charter’s demands and the possibility to outfit the vessel accordingly.

One of the major demands from the charter was to fit the vessel with some big fenders, with fender diameter of at least 2,5 m, in order to protect the two vessels from damaging each other during ship-to-ship transfer. The major problems with fenders of this size was the weight, as each fender has a total weight of 2,300 kilos and the vessel crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 1,000 kilos.

It had to be possible to take the fenders on deck, when the vessel is in transit from terminal to vessels and also be able to do normal trades between terminals as this was another requirement from the charter.

The easy way of doing this was to change the existing crane onboard with a bigger one. This, however, was not possible with the short period of time that was available, no one could deliver a crane at such short notice, and in addition to this it would be very costly to do so.

A solution with a cradle on deck as a kind of ramp was approved by the charter, meaning that the fenders can be pulled up on theses ramps and secured here.

In order to install these ramps and the other requirements of the charter, such as Close Panama chocks on main deck, and on forecastle deck for mooring, specifications were made in order to get the approval from class and to find a yard that could install the different items within the short time limit. So time, expenses, and - most important - the yard location had to be found very fast. Deviation of vessel route was also a very important issue in order to meet the time of arrival in the Caribbean, so a yard in Malaga was found that could carry out the conversion within the time frame.

Ingrid Jakobsen left the yard on 22 March, ready to do bunker trade with all equipment installed, and ready to meet the on hire survey from the charter upon arrival in the Caribbean – only 1½ month after the idea was born.

The above shows that it is possible to have all departments with-in ERRIA working closely together with the huge benefit that we have all the know-how in-house and can offer this as a final pack-age to our internal as well as to our external customers.

Implementation of double hull vessels

It is generally known that the finance crisis has taken its toll in the shipping business. And we have certainly also felt it in our fleet. However, there are indications that our vessels in the chemical segment are not as seriously affected as other segments.

In the short run, the demand on the chemical tanker market will be dictated by the world economy. There is reason to believe that the present financial situation may lead to a postponement of investments in new refineries. However, the long-term demand factors will probably remain intact. E.g. we notice a constant in-crease in the distances between refineries and consumer cen-tres, an increased complexity in trade patterns, stricter and highly varied demands to standards in major consumer centres, etc.

On the supply side, the IMO demands on phasing out of single hull tonnage from the year 2010 are expected to result in lower growth rates. Certainly, the IMO regulations allow the individual flag nations to permit navigation and call of ports for single hull tonnage until the year 2015. But in consequence of the serious oil pollution accident in South Korea in December 2007 many flag nations have significantly changed their opinion concerning single hull tonnage, and it is therefore expected that the phasing out will take place mainly in year 2010. The analysts at Clarkson (Clarkson Research) estimate that single hull vessels make up approx. 18% of the existing world fleet/tonnage. Although some of this is made up of larger vessels it is expected also to have a positive effect on the segment for small chemical tankers.

Further to this, it is expected that the crisis has accelerated the scrapping of old tonnage, and it is assumed that parts of the or-der books will not be delivered as a consequence of the finance

crisis. Various analysts state that, at best, up to 40% of the order books will be very much delayed and, at worst, will not be deliv-ered at all.

In addition to the pressure from the IMO phasing out, also the demands on the technical specifications of the vessels and on the qualifications of the crews are being continuously tightened.

These tightenings and the increased demands to the perfor- mance of the vessels make it difficult to operate old tankers in the USA and in Europe. As ERRIA’s fleet of modern double hull chemical tankers has a very low average age, and as our crew is highly qualified, there is reason to assume that this will ensure us a competitive advantage in the market.
