Medication Errors

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT’S TIME TO TAKE A MEDICATION?

The Bracelet RFID Reader will alert the user by beginning to vibrate, beep, flash its

screen, or a combination of the alerts to notify the user that it is time to administer a med-

ication. The name of the intended medication will also appear

on the devices display screen. When the correct medication

has been verified by the Bracelet RFID Reader the alert meth-

od will be discontinued and a green light will be illuminated on

the device indicating that the meds may be taken. If an incor-

rect medication is detected the alerts will continue and a red

light will be illuminated indicating the incorrect medication. If

the correct medication is not detected by the device after a 15

minute period the alerts will stop and a email or text message

will be sent out to the user’s emergency contacts. Notifying

the contact of the missed dosage and prompting them to con-

tact the user to see if any problems have occurred.

THE PROBLEM – MEDICATION ERRORS

What are medication errors?

Medication Errors are any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm, while

the medication is in the control of the health care professional, patient, or consumer. Sometimes they can be the wrong medi-

cation, the incorrect dosage amount, a shot can be given when a pill has been prescribed, or the medication could have been

already administered.

In the last five years, yearly averages of 1.5

million people were harmed by medications

administration errors. Over 100,000 people

die each year as a result of medication

errors and show more deaths annually than

breast cancer, AIDS, or traffic fatalities in

the Us alone. These errors translate to cost

in excess of $72 billion a year.

What is RFID Technology?

RFID (radio frequency identification) Technology has been around for some

time. It is the same technology used to prevent shoplifting, tack shipping

packages, and used in wireless keycards – just much smaller

HOW DOES ERROR TEC USE THIS TECHNOLOGY?

Error Tec takes tiny RFID tags, some so small they’re hard to seen with the

naked eye, and they attach them to individually packaged medications. they

then encode the tags with the attached medication’s Medicode (medication

identification number)

HOW DOES THIS PREVENT MEDICATION ERRORS?

When a medication is prescribed to a patient by a doctor in a hospital. A Nurse or another qualified staff member will retrieve

the prescribed medication and administer it to the patient. To prevent a medication error from occurring, Error Tec plans to im-

plement their Bracelet RFID Readers to read and verify the accuracy of the medication immediately prior to it being adminis-

tered. Once the medication’s RFID tag has been read by the reader the device will check with the patient’s records to see if the

medication and dosage size being verified matches with the one the doctor had prescribed. If the medications are a match and

correct a green light on the Bracelet RFID Reader will be illuminated and the administrator may continue with administration.

The device will then immediately log the verified medication as administered in the facility computer system. If the medication

being verified is incorrect or has already been administered a red light will be illuminated to the Bracelet RFID Reader, indicat-

ing that an error has occurred and to immediately stop the administration of that medication.

WHAT KIND OF PATENT PENDING TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS AN RFID READER?

An RFID Reader is a chip or circuit with the ability to

send out a radio transmission to a RFID tag. Once the

transmission reaches the tag it

picks up the tag’s information

(Medicode) and is sent back to

the Reader which then internaliz-

es that information.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS?

over the internet through video and

telephonic means, So people who trav-

el to the doctor a lot do not have to go

as often. Another added benefit is that

Reader chips, but if you do not have a

smartphone with a RFID Reader chip in it,

attachable RFID Readers that will work with

the application and your phone.
