MATERIALS/RESOURCESOne of the following books:Pig Pig Gets a Job by David McPhailBerenstain Bears on the Job by Stan and Jan BerenstainBusy Workers by Richard ScaryCurious George Takes a Job by H. A. ReyCurious George Jobs Game on the Smartboard or Promethean board. Go to:http://pbskids.org/cgi-registry/curiousgeorge/on_the_job.pl You could either do this in the computer lab where each child plays alone. Or, you could do this on the smartboard where each child comes up and touches the tool used that connects with the job shown.

Props-pencil, paper, eraser, Chart paper to do assessments

To begin the lesson:Begin with the Pre-test. Pre-test, Time one minute, ask students to name as many jobs as they can, list on the board or chart paper.

HOOK: Ask the following questions: Who can guess the main job of a 1st grader? What tools do you need to do your job?(props)What happens if you do not do your job?

State the Objective

State the objective. Students will know what tools are needed to help a person do their job. Next, read a Career book from the list. Spend time discussing the job name and the tools or materials that the characters used at their job.

Activity choice #1: Explain the Curious George game that the children can either play alone or come up to the smartboard one at a time to match the tool with the job.

Activity choice #2: Matching worksheet/Tools and Careers.

Activity choice #3: Prior to this lesson, ask the children to bring in an object from home that connects with a career of interest to them.)For example, a play hammer, spatula, calculator, etc. (Play 2/2 Game)In small groups, have them show the object and let their friends guess what job they would do with that object.

ACTIVITY/PROCEDURE Cont.

Pre-test, in one minute students will name as many jobs as they can and the counselor will list them on the board (count these e.g. 6).

Post-test, in one minute students will name as many jobs as they can and the counselor will then again list them on the board.

Data collection:- Subtract the number of jobs named in the pretest from the number in the post- test. This is the gain or loss Calculate the percentage as follows:

Summary: The goal of Career Lessons is to provide a core curriculum requirement for Careers for students in Cobb County Schools at each grade level. At the end of this comprehensive lesson, 1st grade students should have an increased vocabulary of different jobs/careers and know the tools associated with those jobs. Counselors will also have an assessment that can be shared.
