    From the ESESES Administraon Welcome

Welcome to the 2015/16 school year at Internaonal School

Manila. It has been great to see so many new and returning

students starng to sele into their new classes and learning

communies this week. We know that transions looks

dierent for dierent ages and students. Our goal is to support

all in feeling safe, valued and ready to learn. It has been

equally pleasing to welcome so many parents onto campusthis week. We held a new parent coee morning on Tuesday

for the Early Years (Preschool, Kindergarten and Grade 1),

where we were able to introduce some key personnel in the

Elementary School, and also start some dialogue focussed on

transion, learning and play in the Early Years. We will be

holding a similar event for new parents in Grades 2, 3 and 4

next Tuesday morning at 7:45 am in the Lile Theater (email

    invitaons will be sent).

Building Learning Communies which Foster Inquiry

As an Elementary faculty we have been focussing on one big

idea over the past three weeks, as we have prepared for thestart of the school year and the welcoming of our new and

returning students. We know that for learning to occur,

students need to feel a sense of membership in, and shared

ownership of, their classroom. This applies whether you are

moving grade levels, schools or even countries. The role of the

teacher in helping create these classroom communies is

pivotal. We have used some provocaons from Kath Murdoch

an on-going consultant to ISM and world leader in inquiry

based learning pedagogy, to provoke and promote teachers

thinking in this area. The provocaons were:

How will you ensure the classroom is ‘owned’ by the students? How will you involve them in creang the learning

    space?

How will you use quesons to drive learning?

How will you nd out about your students’ interest?

How will you prepare the way for inquiry to grow in your classroom this year?

How will you help students learn and use the language of learning?

How can you make some of your beginning of the year ‘acvies’ more inquiry- based?

How will you ensure that curiosity thrives in your classroom?  Connued in page 2

    Connued from page 1

How will you foster strong relaonships in your classroom from day one?

How will you make room for the unexpected?

    How will you get connected?

Hopefully you will ‘noce’ some of these learnings in coming weeks in our classrooms.

    Mr. Travis O’Neel

This week we held a community service for Travis. It was a ng tribute to such a wonderful husband, father, teacher,

colleague and human being. This morning our Counseling Department also held a parent workshop on ‘Talking About

Grief in Your Family’. Once again, a hearelt thank you to our community who have extended their support for both

the school and to Travis’ family at this me. One quote from this morning's presentaon resonates strongly at this

    point in me.

Grief is a journey, oen perilous and without clear direcon, that must be taken. The experience of grieving cannot be

ordered or categorized, hurried or controlled, pushed aside or ignored indenitely. It is inevitable as breathing, as

change, as love. It may be postponed, but it will not be denied.

    Molly Fumia

Our teachers and counselors connue to act a crical level of support for both you and you children. Please do not

hesitate to reach out at any me.

Elementary School Program Guide & Handbook

Last week you will have received our Handbook and Program Guide for 2015/16. The Handbook contains some useful

logiscal informaon and the Program Guide provides a broad overview of our curriculum framework.

We look forward to discussing this further with you at our Open House on Wednesday, 2nd September, 2015. A more

detailed outline of the evening will be forthcoming shortly.

Once again, a very warm welcome to the 2015/16 school year in the Elementary School!
