We talked about how together, we can best support your child’s growth in these areas - both at school and at home.  If there was a core message from both Kindergarten and Preschool, it was that every child’s positive self -concept about being a reader and a writer is critical. Our role as adults it is to create a ‘culture’ of reading and writing, both at home and at school, such that your children grow into this image. Lev Vygotsky, Russian psychologist, once said, ‘Through others, we become ourselves’. We need to create an environment where our children view themselves as real authors and readers. As well as developing skills in decoding, comprehending and in formal written notation, children as young as three years old can see themselves as readers and writers when they look at pictures and narrate their own story, or when they draw pictures and symbols as part of the first stage of writing.  Ron Ritchart, from the Harvard School of Education, talks about culture in terms of eight cultural ‘forces’ which define our classrooms. These are: time, opportunities, routines and structures, language, modeling, interactions & relationships, physical environment and expectations. It is his belief that culture is the hidden tool in transforming our classrooms into places of high level thinking and learning. When looking at these forces through the lens of literacy development, we must start to ask ourselves these questions:  How do we provide time, every day, for literacy development in our classrooms?   What purposeful and authentic opportunities in reading and writing do we provide for our children every day?  Do our routines and structures support literacy development?  Do we provide our students with the ‘right language’ at the ‘right time’ to able to be able to articulate and make visible the strategies that readers and writers use?  Do we model reading and writing every day and the thinking that goes into these processes?  Do we provide opportunities to talk about reading and writing every day? With each other and with adults?   Is the physical environment supportive of reading and writing? How accessible are materials? Do we have great, real literature at our fingertips?  Do we clearly articulate our expectations about reading and writing and make it meaningful, rather than ‘work to do’?

Literacy in the Elementary School

This week both our Kindergarten team and our Preschoolteam held successful parent information sessionson literacy learning and teaching at ISM. We talked abouthow together, we can best support your child’s growth inthese areas - both at school and at home.

If there was a core message from both Kindergarten andPreschool, it was that every child’s positive self -conceptabout being a reader and a writer is critical. Our role as

adults it is to create a ‘culture’ of reading and writing, bothat home and at school, such that your children grow intothis image. Lev Vygotsky, Russian psychologist, oncesaid, ‘Through others, we become ourselves’.  We needto create an environment where our children viewthemselves as real authors and readers. As well asdeveloping skills in decoding, comprehending and informal written notation, children as young as three yearsold can see themselves as readers and writers when theylook at pictures and narrate their own story, or when theydraw pictures and symbols as part of the first stage ofwriting.

Ron Ritchart, from the Harvard School of Education, talksabout culture in terms of eight cultural ‘forces’ whichdefine our classrooms. These are: time, opportunities, routines and structures, language, modeling, interactions& relationships, physical environment and expectations. Itis his belief that culture is the hidden tool in transformingour classrooms into places of high level thinking and

learning. When looking at these forces through the lens of literacy development, we must start to ask ourselvesthese questions:

How do we provide time, every day, for literacy development in our classrooms?

What purposeful and authentic opportunities in reading and writing do we provide for our children everyday?

Do our routines and structures support literacy development?

Do we provide our students with the ‘right language’ at the ‘right time’ to able to be able to articulate andmake visible the strategies that readers and writers use?

Do we model reading and writing every day and the thinking that goes into these processes?

Do we provide opportunities to talk about reading and writing every day? With each other and with adults?

Is the physical environment supportive of reading and writing? How accessible are materials? Do we havegreat, real literature at our fingertips?

Do we clearly articulate our expectations about reading and writing and make it meaningful, rather than‘work to do’?
