What happen post- ENVISAT?

The ESA Living Planet Programme:

• created in consultation with the key players Europe’s scientists

• Industry• European Commission• EUMETSAT and many others

The mission classes and the programme elements

Dual mission strategy, two types of user driven, complementary missions:

Earth Explorer to better understand the earth

Earth Watch, to initiate long term monitoringsystem and services

Earth Watch

Key principles:

• Synergy of commercial and institutional market

• Integrated European capabilities: space, ground services

• Core initial capability defined mainly by institutional market

• Long term perspective required

Earth Watch

Advantages of a unique European initiative:

• Space segment: commonality of components, economy of scale

• Ground segment: sharing of facilities by different services

• Service segment: access to institutional markets across Europe, lower cost per service, critical mass to tackle non-European markets

The Earth Watch: Background

The ENVISAT will extend and enhance the services provided by ERS and open new opportunities

The ERS missions initially conceived for research generated soon high value products and services demanded by the users on an operational basis.

The Earth Watch: Operational Meteorology

The first ESA EO mission, Meteosat-1, 1977 would have been called Earth Watch

6 more European meteorological satellites have been placed in GEO in 20 years.

Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) is in phase C/D.

Activity started for Eumetsat on an Advanced Geostationary IR Sounder as alternative for post MSG-3 time

The Earth Watch: Operational Meteorology

The first MetOp satellites are being built for the Eumetsat Polar System (EPS).

The MetOp satellites already include capabilities developed under ESA research missions, OMI, ASCAT (from ERS GOME and AMI-SCAT) and GRAS (from Earth Explorer).
