ESCALATION – BIGGER GAMES OF WARHAMMER 40,000The Aegis Defence Line crumpled beneath the weight of alien dead. The Orks had expended thousands of Grots and Boyz to create a small hole in the Imperial lines and as they pushed through the broken gap in the wall, men and women died bloodily to keep the ravening aliens at bay.

As these brave troopers were torn apart, reinforcements arrived. Baron Augustus led his surviving Knightly Household in a charge, hurling the aliens back and sending tens of hundreds to oblivion.

A roar went up from the dying xenos as they were massacred by the Imperial Knights. Their bellows were soon answered by a horde of clanking, smoke belching monstrosities, unerringly making their way to the Knights in a lumbering charge. The war for Ruinatia was far from over.

WELCOMEWelcome to Throne of Skulls: Escalation. Ahead of you lies a weekend dedicated to the hobby of collecting, painting and playing large games with Citadel Miniatures in the grim darkness of the forty-first millennium.

Throne of Skulls events are perfect for all hobbyists, from brand new to veteran, as the focus is on camaraderie and playing in the spirit of the game; that is to say friendly competition and fair play are the order of the day.

WHAT IS THRONE OF SKULLS?At this Throne of Skulls, you’ll get to lead your army through 4 larger games of Warhammer 40,000 over incredible terrain, facing fully painted armies led by like-minded opponents. You will fight alone for personal glory in the arenas of painting, sportsmanship and more. Grab your collection of miniatures, head to Nottingham for a hobby experience like no other.

EVENT ESSENTIALSDate: 3rd - 4th DecemberSystem: Warhammer 40,000Army Size: 3,000 pointsNumber of games: 4Army Selection: Battle Forged or Unbound (you choose).Scenarios in use: Maelstrom of War (randomly determined).Publications in use: All Warhammer 40,000 publications from Games Workshop, including Black Library, White Dwarf and Forge World (excluding Horus Heresy publications).

A NOTE ON PAINTING AND BASING:Fully painted armies are a sight to behold. There is nothing quite like getting a whole army painted up and ready to go about the messy business of exterminating

the enemy. Even better is when that collection grows and grows and all of a sudden you want to play bigger and bigger games, just to see it all on the table.

Well - that’s what Escalation is all about – getting a large army finished (or started) and bringing it to Warhammer World to play against other fully painted armies. This glorious spectacle and all round fun weekend of relaxed gaming against like-minded opponents can often be the highlight of the year and makes for a great experience.

Do you have what it takes to fully paint and base 3,000 points and come down to Warhammer World and have a great time? Of course you do. Read on...

At registration we will ask you if your army is fully painted and based. If it isn’t don’t panic! We will do our best to give you the time and space you need to get your models finished before your first game. As we don’t allow anyone to play with unpainted or unbased models, but we understand that life gets in the way sometimes, we will do our best to help you get them up to standard.

PAINTING AND BASING A 3,000 POINT ARMY

We know that painting an entire 3,000 point army isn’t easy. In fact it can be downright tricky, with all those

‘real-life’ hazards that constantly try and get in the way of some hobby in the evenings, or on a day off.

So for this event, and this event only, we thought it would be good to give some guidance as to what fully painted

and based will count as, rather than just leave it to your own common sense and hobby virtue as we normally do.

In this instance, you ought to have a basecoat and wash on every part of the model (different colours where

appropriate please), and every base in your army (bar clear ones) ought to have a painted texture applied. This includes the large oval bases you typically use for Flyers.

This is so that everyone at the event will have a clear expectation of what they will be fighting against and so

that no-one is any doubt as to what the standard must be in order to take part.

If we see models that don’t adhere to this we will have no choice but to (regretfully of course) ask you to remove the offending models from the table, and get them painted in

between games.

ARMIESTo attend this event, you’ll need to bring an army of up to 3,000 points, selected using the “choosing your army” section of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook (page 116).

We require that all of the miniatures you bring have been produced by Games Workshop and are fully assembled, painted and based. For the sake of clarity for your opponents, and to avoid mid-game confusion, we also require that each model represents exactly what it is on your army list (including all weapons and equipment).

GAMESOver the course of the weekend, you will get to play four games of Warhammer 40,000, each lasting up to three and a half hours. Before each game, we will randomly select a mission from the Maelstrom of War section of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook (pages 148-153), which everyone in the event will play. Once the mission is played, it will be crossed off our list; each one will only be played a maximum of once.

All your opponents throughout the weekend will be randomly selected for you by the Events Team. Simply find out what table you are on, and make your way there to meet your opponent and start your game.

If you have a model which is unfinished, then we politely ask you to remove it from the table, as we are obliged to protect the experience of every attendant - we all want to play against fully painted armies, and this event is designed to give everyone the opportunity to do just that!

All miniatures in your collection must be produced by Games Workshop and be fully assembled, painted and based. Each model must fully represent what you have presented on your army lists.

SOME FRIENDLY ADVICE ON ARMY SELECTION

Bigger games often come with bigger models, so be prepared to take on the big guys! 3,000 points gives you plenty of choice, so you could easily take Super Heavy

Vehicles or Gargantuan Creatures and still have plenty of room for some Titan-busting weapons too.

Also, bear in mind that if you decide to ‘go big’ and take nothing but these incredible units, your games might be

very, very short indeed! Some of the games at our Throne of Skulls events that involve ten Imperial Knights (total, between two players) fighting each other tend to be over

in less than twenty minutes, with a glorious series of explosions causing chain reactions and destroying both

sides in short order.

So while this is truly epic, at this weekend it can mean you have nothing to do for up to four hours while you

wait for everyone else to finish and draw a new opponent. There is plenty to do in Warhammer World, but this

situation could happen multiple times over the weekend, so it’s worth bearing that in mind when choosing your

forces.

You can also multiple armies to the event too, so bring as much choice as you like!

SCORINGThroughout the event, you’ll earn Victory Points in your games. At the end of each game, simply record how Victory Points you earned for primary and secondary missions combined. How many Victory Points, combined with how many Favourite Game Votes (see below) you score will help determine your position in the final rankings of the event as a second sorter.

BIG GAME HUNTERThis weekend we will be recognising the player who choose to hunt the mightiest of prey. At the end of each game you will be asked to total up how many of the following units you have destroyed. Whoever has the highest running total at the end of the weekend will be awarded the Big Game Hunter award at the Award Ceremony.

The units being hunted are:

Super-Heavy Vehicles of any kind (Walkers, Tanks etc.)Gargantuan Monstrous CreaturesMonstrous CreaturesEnemy Warlords

FAVOURITE GAME VOTESFavourite Game Votes are simple - just pick the game you enjoyed the most that weekend. It’s a great way to acknowledge a really fun game, an opponent with whom you had a great rapport, or maybe it was just that their army looked fantastic. Votes are taken at the end of the weekend with the results of your final game, so please show your appreciation of your favourite opponent.

HOW TO WIN THE THRONE OF SKULLSAt the end of the weekend, we will call all of the players who have earned the most Favourite Game votes to the stage. Of these players, the one who has scored the most Victory Points will be awarded the legendary Throne of Skulls trophy.

Only players who themselves handed in a Favourite Game vote are eligible.

OTHER ACTIVITIES DURING THE EVENT

LUNCHWe will be providing lunch for you on both days - Saturday and Sunday. The menu is decided closer to date by our expert chefs, and we make sure that a wide variety of dietary requirements are catered for. If you can let us know before the event then we can easily accommodate any requests, but if you can’t (or forget!) don’t worry - we will also circle the hall during the first game asking for any specific requests and you can inform us then too.

voting for your favourite collection from those selected during Sunday lunch time. The player who receives the most number of votes will be earn the Best Army award and glory shall be theirs!
