I really didn’t start caring about being healthy until freshman year in high school when I decided I wanted to look better. So, I got my butt up and started doing some yoga while watching Anderson Cooper. Being healthy is important and finding time as a college student is sometimes hard. We live busy lives and fitting physical activity in is exhausting. We hope this issue inspires you to get active and to make your health a top priority. Evin and I will be running our first 5K Color Run next weekend in Austin. Wish us luck! (I’ll be the one coughing up a lung.)

For as long as I can remember I have played sports. Then I came to college and that time of my life ended. Not having practice to go to and not having exercise scheduled for me was daunting. I encourage everyone to find an activity they love and do it often. If you hate to run, don’t run but do something that will keep you happy. As my mom always says, “If you feel good, you look good.” Go out today and do something active. Then drink a protein shake or make some juice (pg. 12). At the end of the day, just be happy.

What’s in your
Bag?Getting ready to go to the gym can be a workout in its own right. Running around the house hunting for your left shoe, digging through the laundry to find socks that match (yes they have to match) or going back and forth from the kitchen three times to get snacks and water is a hassle. Here’s a list of eight things that should definitely be in your gym bag.
extra socks
Loose Change Ouch!
Water
a Snack
Deodorant
Jump, Jump, jump!
Menthol
Elastics
How much water should
you drink? Take your
body weight and divide by
two. That number
in ounces is the amount you should
drink daily. For example if you
weigh 140 pounds, you should drink 70 ounces
of water every day.

It’s OK if you do it. Everyone else does, too.
we’re breaking down the benefits of a major sweat.
Despite how gross those moistened shirt stains can look and feel, perspiration serves as natural a bodily function as breathing or going No. 1 (or 2). Mostly made up of good ‘ole H2O — as well as salt and minerals — sweat acts as the body’s cooling system in case of overheated emergencies like exercise or fever. As the liquid settles and evaporates with the heat, your body cools. But not only does sweating keep you from burning up with the heat of a thousand suns, it gets your blood pumping and removes unwanted toxins and chemicals (read: alcohol) from your body. Terry Hawk, who works at the Huston Huffman Fitness Center, finds working out boosts his mood, partly because of the added sweating cleanse. “I find sweating to be one of the greatest feelings because after I get done working out, I feel like all the toxins are out of my body, and it makes me feel rejuvenated,” said Hawk, chemical biosciences junior. Physicians such as Dr. Luke Fortney also recommend sauna therapy — sitting in a steam room for 15 to 30 minutes several times a week as a post-workout to relax the muscles. You also will sweat more buckets in a sauna than by exercising. However, no matter what you do to get that sweatin’ action on, stay hydrated with a bottle or two of water nearby and give yourself a pat on the sweaty back later.

Throw your notebooks in the air like you just don’t care! Skip everything, do whatever you want and get nostalgic about the year.
when it comes time for the bedroom,
i feel self-conscious about my body.
what should i do?
Join a gym, go running around your apartment complex – get off your ass and do something about it.
There is no reason to complain if you aren’t actively trying to fix the problem.
Everyone is self conscious every now and then so don’t dwell on it too much. If the person you are with really likes you, it shouldn’t matter.
Not to mention those spring break bathing suit photos are all over Facebook, so it isn’t like they don’t know what you look like under the baggy clothes.
i want my significant other to start
being healthy. how can i do that?
Work it into a date. Cook a healthy dinner in an attempt to find good foods they like and can replace their daily dose of Raising Cane’s with.
Another option is to go on a date in the great outdoors. Find a trail you can go hiking on or a lake you can kayak on. These are fun dates that are a lot better for you than heading down to the Olive Garden and eating a 1,000-calorie meal.
At the end of the day, you should be honest with them. “You’re fat” isn’t a good option, but “I think we should start being healthier” is a good alternative.
when it comes time for the bedroom,
i feel self-conscious about my body.
what should i do?
Oh, dear.Do some push-ups and move on.
You should be happy with how you look.
If it’s really an issue, turn the lights down low and get down to business. Tuck everything into some Spanx and don’t let your lady friend or chiseled hunk know what’s really going on. In the dark they won’t know what you are.
But really, if this person matters, this issue won’t matter. Take everything off and let it all hang loose.
Good luck!A tip: If you are in fact sleeping
with some beautiful specimen, take the time to feel around. Just don’t let them do the same. (It’ll spoil the fantasy.)
i want my significant other to start
being healthy. how can i do that?
Don’t bring home McDonalds. That may be a good start.
Good habits will start with you. If they see you eating carrots and laxatives, they will, too. (No, really, don’t ever take laxatives. Unless you’re trying to loosen something up, of course.) Let them see you eating healthy (go to Sprouts!) and going to the gym. Maybe they’ll ask to join in? If they don’t, force them. Use this line: “Get in shape. Or else! No more sex.”
when it comes time for the bedroom, i
feel self-conscious about my body. what
should i do?
Well at least you don’t make out with a mirror. But why are you self-conscious? Are you afraid she’ll be smothered or ... underwhelmed? Either way, if you’ve already gotten her to come back to your place and get naked, it’s pretty much game on. Unless you have some terrible deformity or are keeping a secret, she won’t go running out the door. So turn on the Sugar Hill Gang, and “Jump On It.” If you’re as ugly as you think, she won’t call back, and you get an easy out with a bonus one-night stand. Boom.
i want my significant other to start
being healthy. how can i do that?
Who are you, Richard Simmons? Get out of my face with that nonsense, vegetable Nazi. Why did you let this “other” become significant if you didn’t approve of her health habits?
Besides, this is Oklahoma, land of morbid obesity. The only things bigger than the waistlines are the portion sizes. And if you’re disgustingly fat, just blame it on the food, not your eating habits. Bonus points if you file a lawsuit.
If you wanted a girlfriend who shops at the vegan-organic-lesbian co-op and helps you bake granola, you shouldn’t have picked her up at the Waffle House. So take your thighmaster and shove it.

with rugby officially in its offseason,

equivalent to a football’s middle linebacker — reflects
on his final year as a Sooner and describes the
multi-faceted physical training that goes into the sport.

The sports gear I can’t live without is: my different sets of cleats.
When nobody’s around, I’d have to admit that I really enjoy: cooking.
The athlete’s muscles I’d most like to steal is: Patrick Willis, linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers.
The one place I’d rather be right now is: in the middle of a close game with the ball in my hand.
The rugby team escapes on the road by: dropping everything and just being silly.
My favorite rugby term is: blood replacement, which means a player substitution that occurs when a player has to leave the fi eld to attend to wounds.
The funniest memory I have with the rugby team is: Summer 7’s tournament in Stillwater. We played in jean shorts and neon socks to confuse our opponents.
In my spare time, I’m usually: partying it up and meeting new people.
continued on the next pageagainst the wind
Psychology senior dakota wilkinson runs
drills with his speed chute attached.
Height: 6’1”
Fifteen college men storm the rugby field, ready to face their opponents in the hot summer heat, wearing their typical jerseys and cleats. Only, this time, they’ve added a twist to their usual game-time attire in the hopes of distracting the opposing team: jean cut-off shorts and neon socks.
This is just one way the OU men’s rugby club team keeps the mood light, despite the physically arduous sport they play. And Dakota, psychology senior, has been part of the team’s ranks since his freshman year, wearing his No. 8 jersey loud and proud.
Dakota specializes in the 8-man position, which is rugby’s version of football’s middle linebacker. He started playing rugby, getting into biffs and restarting plays in scrums, his freshman year of high school and now hopes to play after college. He’ll be traveling and playing overseas in Scotland, picking up tips and tricks from more experienced players in Europe, where rugby gets more recognition than it does in the U.S.
“It’s hard to get people out to the games,” Dakota says. “It’s kind of frustrating, because you want to get big groups of people out there, but it just never really happens.”
And Dakota has proven he has the skills to make his dreams of joining a national team someday a reality — he’s ranked No. 5 in the
collegiate Top 10 Tries list and has earned a spot on the West All-Star team and regional Heart of America rugby football union team the past four years.
“It’s [success] definitely been through following the leader kind of stuff. The captain of my high school team my freshman year was a huge inspiration to me, because I used to be short, fat, out of shape, and he just refused to let me slack at practice,” Dakota says. “So, he dragged me through the dirt and made sure I got my stuff done, and I just took that mentality into it every year.”
The team practices constantly and travels to nationwide matches without the same funding an NCAA team would get.
“We were ranked highly the year coming into my freshman year, and
since then, we’ve kind of taken a dip. We’ve had a lot of good athletes graduate,” he says. “But to finally be back up there, it means that what we’ve been working for, it’s been for something.”
During practice, the team switches it up, from running drills on the field to attending yoga sessions to loosen up muscles. Although Dakota has never joined in on any downward-facing dog, he has hit the pool for a team workout.
When they aren’t battling it out at rugby matches across the nation or at OU’s home field, he and the team spend time bonding and making their own fun.
Dakota says the men push one another’s buttons all in good fun and create a general silly atmosphere. Sometimes they’ll play a booger, or a touch football game, showing their true passion for rugby. When they’ve finally put away the rugby ball, the team will host their own parties, where they’ll sing along to the music and socialize with all who attend.
Dakota also spends time catching up on TV shows, like “White Collar” or “Breaking Bad.” Otherwise, he’ll grab a sci-fi book like his favorite, “Ender’s Game,” or waste time on Stumbleupon.com.
In the f u t u r e , D a k o t a hopes to put his rugby skills to good use as a professional player.
“I want to make a career if it’s p o s s i b l e , ” D a k o t a says. “You can leave eve r y t h i n g on the field and know that at the
end of the day, that worst-case scenario, you gave it all that you had and you shouldn’t be upset with yourself.”

t wo-time marathoner Slayde Meyer worried college would make
running another race impossible, but after a strong 20-mile training run, Meyer now is confident he will finish his third marathon Sunday — and set a personal record doing so. “I hate it. I hate running,” said Slayde, University College freshman. “But the thing is, I love running in the marathon. And I love the benefits. Running for me is a have to.”
continued on the next page
runON THE
1 1the starting line
Slayde took up running in October 2008 to lose weight. The then high school sophomore from small-town Forgan, Okla., had been accepted to visit London as a missionary, and the program recommended participants have a certain body mass index.
At 6’4” and 286 pounds, Slayde didn’t think he had a problem, but he calculated his BMI and learned that he fell into the obese spectrum — a realization Slayde calls his “light bulb” moment.
“I had to change,” Slayde said. And so he did. After just a
month of running, Slayde had lost 25 pounds. By the end of 2008, he had lost 65 pounds and could run six miles without walking.
That’s when Slayde began running races. He started with a 10K, then ran two half-marathons, and by August 2009, he had set a goal to run a full marathon.
for the first timeTraining forced Slayde — who
weighed only 190 pounds after losing almost 100 pounds — to stop dieting.
Losing the weight and running the marathon changed Slayde emotionally, as well as physically, he said. It showed him the result of positivity and extreme dedication.
“Finishing my first full marathon is my proudest moment ever,” Slayde said. “Going over the finish line gave me such a sense of accomplishment.”
Slayde had his bib number from the race — 3902 — tattooed on his foot as a reminder of that moment, which he says symbolizes his journey.
third time aroundSlayde began training for Sunday’s
Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon
on Jan. 1 after making a New Year’s resolution to run a third marathon, mostly out of fear of gaining the infamous freshman 15.
In addition to completing long runs, Slayde has been cross-training on the indoor track at the Huston Huffman Fitness Center to quicken his pace. But after midterms hit in March, Slayde’s pace slowed from 7 minutes and 15 seconds per mile to 8 minutes and 30 seconds per mile.
Still, Slayde projects he will finish Sunday’s race in three hours and 45 minutes, a personal record if it happens.
inspiring othersOne of the most rewarding aspects
of his transformation, Slayde said, is pushing others to better themselves.
Being told by those who have seen his before-and-after pictures, “‘I think of you when I don’t want to run, and I know that I can’” makes Slayde want to do
everything with the hope that it inspires someone.
After Sunday’s race, he will rest a month before putting that idea to the test yet again. The test? Qualifying for and running the 2014 Boston Marathon.

The Harvey Wallbanger:Named for a Hollywood surfer, this cocktail usually requires some special ingredients, but you can make do with what you’ve got above the fridge.
• Vodka• Orange juice• Cream liqueur or Bailey’s• Sparkling wine.1) Mix it all up into a glass and serve over ice.
The Manhattan:A lot normally goes into stirring up a proper Manhattan, but there’s a way to get good results with what’s on hand.
• Whiskey (Scotch is bet-ter if you’ve got it)
• Half a glass of red wine (Best with Merlot or Cabernet
Sauvignon) • Lemon/lime soda
1) Mix together and serve in a wine glass.
Adult Popsicles:Summer is coming and it’s calling your name. Just gather up all that leftover rum and make a cool treat for a lazy Saturday afternoon or whenever you feel like taking this childhood favorite to the next level.
• 2 1/2 cups of Coke• 1/3 cup Spiced Rum • 1/3 cup Kahlua • Popsicle sticks • Popsicle mold or plastic cups1) Mix ingredients and pour into a popsicle mold. 2) Freeze for two hours or until the mixture is solid enough to hold the popsicle stick upright. *Note: It’s best to use flat Coke because this allows the popsicle to stay frozen longer (and what’s a better way to use up that leftover soda?).
Aztec:• Sparkling wine • Watermelon Schnapps• Gold tequila 1) Pour ingredients into together and serve in a Champagne flute.
Cabernet Cobbler:• Cabernet Sauvignon • Soda water• Sugar• Lemon juice1) Combine the sugar, lemon juice and soda water in a wine glass and then add wine and ice.

Each issue, we take a look back at the pop culture moments that made us gasp, cry and scream.
