1;5 Sadie Thompson Module: OUGD301 Brief: Escobar Cantina Working on collaborative brief with Will Cotterill to create a range of artwork and design pieces for the Leeds based Mexican restaurant Escobar Cantina. The work had to compliment it’s surroundings and blend in with the restaurant’s existing layout and decor. Working to a live brief and dealing with existing clients meant that all work had to be designed not only to our personal tastes, but also had to cater to the clients wants and needs. Inuenced by Mexico’s Day of the Dead festival as a subject matter, the artwork produced consists mainly of wood etchings, complimented by various printing methods to add colour to reect the vibrancy of Mexican culture.

Three plaques displaying facts and information concerning Mexican culture etched into wood.

Plaques displaying information engages customers with the artwork.

Brief: Escobar Cantina

A two meter wide map of Mexico, made up of different pieces laser cut out of MDF to show the different provinces, glued and displayed on a large wall painted terracotta. Different sections were varnished to emphasize depth.

Four sugar skull illustrations etched into wood, layered by spray paint and screen printed colour.

Painting over old artwork and mounting new designs was a substantial part of the brief, taking up a lot of man hours.

Mounting work in an existing space on a large scale, meant a lot of thought and preparation went into composition.

Sugar skulls originally intended to be mounted in large steel frames, were later attached straight to the wall due to safety hazards and time allowance.

Wooden plaques, displaying etched imagery that relates to Mexican culture, and sign displaying the restaurant’s name.

Finished off with a small plaque crediting us as the designers and our contact details.
