NORTHERN LIGHTS EXPLORATION 2016/2017 – 8 days BEST SELLER TOUR IN 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015

Experience the best of Iceland’s winter! Our Northern

Lights Exploration series are designed to include the

highlights of Iceland and aim to maximize the

chances of seeing the elusive Northern Lights. In

addition to a seven night stay with breakfast, this

program includes our special six night Northern

Lights Academy, a combination of evening

presentations, lectures, film and guided searches for

the Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights.

Experience Icelandic winter as good as it gets. Head

to the countryside: from the regions of Snæfellsnes

Peninsula in the west to the Vatnajökull glacier in the

southeast. Profit to search for the Aurora Borealis

away from the big city lights.

HIGHLIGHTS and EXPERIENCES:

Climb a volcano crater and walk between two continental tectonic plates

Visit a traditional shark farmer, turf farmsteads and churches

Relax in the Blue Lagoon and learn about living next to Eyjafjallajökull volcano

See Icelandic horses, taste freshly baked hot spring bread and enjoy a fjord cruise

Six evenings Northern Lights Academy

Program offered in two group sizes: maximum 16 or 45 persons

ITINERARY: Day 1, SUN, TUE, THU or FRI: WELCOME to ICELAND (50 km/31 mls) Individual transfer (no guide) by Flybus shuttle bus from Keflavik Airport to your accommodation in Reykjavík where you spend the night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own.

Day 2, MON, WED, FRI or SAT: REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR & BORGARFJÖRÐUR SAGA VALLEY (245 km/152 mls) At 09:00 meet your tour guide who shows the group the highlights of Iceland's exciting capital. Then we head west. Borgarfjörður is known as the Saga valley because of its many important historical events. We get a chance to climb the Grábrók volcano crater and get warmed at Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring which produces 180 liters per second of water that is nearly boiling - 97° Celsius. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls pouring from beneath a wide lava field. Barnafoss – the Children’s falls, is nearbywith its own tragic tale. We spend two nights in Borgarnes, West Iceland. The afternoon includes a lecture about Northern Lights. Afterdinner, we step into the hotel garden in search of the Northern Lights followed by a hot cup of chocolate or tea.

Day 3, TUE, THU, SAT or SUN: SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA & FJORD CRUISE (250 km/155 mls) The Snæfellsnes Peninsula “the peninsula of the snowy mountain“ juts out from Iceland’s west coast, like a long arm with a clenched fist at its tip, and is in many ways a microcosm of the whole island. A rugged mountain chain runs its length. We travel to the charming fishing town of Stykkishólmur for a cruise in the Breiðafjörður fjord. After a light lunch a uniquely Icelandic “treat“ awaits us at Bjarnarhöfn, where they make Hákarl - the fermented shark. Depending on road and weather condtions, we visit the fishing village of Grundarfjörður, a place with an impressive coastline and mountains, lakes and waterfalls behind the village. Jutting out into the bay rises one of the most photographed mountain in Iceland, Mt. Kirkjufell. On the way back to Borgarnes the guide gives you some practical tips on how to photograph the Auroras as part of the Northern Lights Academy program. Naturally, once darkness falls, we are out in the hotel garden to chase the Northern Lights and to soak in the hotel’s outdoor hot tubs.

Day 4, WED, FRI, SUN or MON: GOLDEN CIRCLE, GEOTHERMAL TASTE & ICELANDIC HORSES (220 km/136 mls) Today we travel along the Hvalfjörður fjord. The first stop is at an Icelandic wool outlet store, just to see what they do with all those sheep! We continue inland to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We travel the Golden Circle route and see steam rising from the Geysir geothermal fields as we arrive. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at 5-10 minutes intervals. The chef of the Restaurant Geysir invites you to taste freshly baked hot spring bread served with Icelandic butter, geothermally boiled eggs and herring. It is best served with a small glass of Geysir Schnapps, very cold – nearly freezing. On we travel to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river and attracts tourists and travellers in summer and winter.

In the afternoon, you learn about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and history and visit a geothermal greenhouse, before we reach the accommodation in South Iceland. Tonight, step into the darkness and search for the elusive Northern Lights, while best enjoyed from a comfortable hot tub in the garden of the hotel, amidst the peace and stillness of rural Iceland.

Day 5, THU, SAT, MON or TUE: SOUTH ICELAND & EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL VOLCANO (220 km/136 mls) Today we travel along the South coast. At the Eyjafjallajökull Information Center we learn about living next to a glacier and an active volcano. Further east we visit one of Iceland's finest folk museums. This museum contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artifacts from Iceland's past and several turf-built houses. Nearby is Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. In the afternoon we take a stroll on the black lava beach and along bird cliffs at Reynisfjara in South Iceland. We spend 2 nights near Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the Vatnajökull National Park region, located in complete darkness and ideal for Northern Lights search.

Day 6, FRI, SUN, TUE or WED: SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK & VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER (280 km/174 mls) Today’s program is all about glaciers, ice and icebergs. We travel to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, and we explore the extraordinary site and might see seals swimming in arctic waters. You can walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs get stranded. In the afternoon we visit the tiny turf church at Hof and spend time at Europe’s largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe's largest glacier. In the evening enjoy a film presentation about the Northern Lights as part of the Northern Lights Academy program. Be careful not to go to bed too soon in this remote and quiet location or you may just miss out one more chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky.

Day 7, SAT, MON, WED or THU: SOUTH SHORE, REYKJAVÍK & BLUE LAGOON (370 km/230 mls) From Kirkjubæjarklaustur we head across the Eldhraun lava field to the village of Vík, where we make a photo stop. The black lava beach with high bird cliffs and pounding waves is very impressive. Further west we reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges from the mountain. In the afternoon we return to Reykjavik and have about 2 hours leisure time to explore Iceland's capital on our own, visit museums, do some shopping or simply rest after all this touring. In the evening we get to soak in the famous Blue Lagoon, followed by an Icelandic dinner at the Northern Light Inn Hotel and followed by one last nocturnal tour to seek more Northern Lights. Around midnight we reach Reykjavík for one last night.

EXTRAS COSTS FOR DINNERS TO BE PAID AT THE HOTELS: Fixed 2-course dinners with fish, meat or vegetarian main courses are available at the hotels starting at ISK 6.000 (about EUR 45) per person per night. Note, that the country hotels do not offer a la carte meals and there are no other restaurants nearby. Paying for a 2-course dinner directly at the hotel is less expensive than to have it included in the tour package.

NATURE FEES: There is a possibility that some of the nature attractions around Iceland might charge an entrance fee during the trip. These entrance fees are not included in the tour price and need to be paid by all tour members additionally on the spot, when entering any of these nature sites. Locations, amount of entrance fee, form of payment and other details are not known at the present time and are subject to change.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: This program includes a special six night Northern Lights Academy – which means that during 6 evenings there is a combination of presentations, lectures, a film and guided searches for the Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights. All countryside hotels in this program offer a Northern Lights wake up call for guests that register for that special service at the hotel reception. The Northern Lights Exploration series are designed to spend 6 evenings in the countryside to maximize the chances of seeing the elusive Northern Lights, still the tour is dependent on weather and therefore sightings are not guaranteed. The Northern Lights are in the northern hemisphere from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many natural wonders, the Northern Lights are ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await patiently this truly outstanding event. For the best photos we recommend using a tripod.

But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event.

ITINERARY: Day 1, TUE: WELCOME to ICELAND (50 km/31 mls) Individual transfer by Flybus shuttle bus from Keflavik Airport to your accommodation in Reykjavík where you spend the night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own.

Day 2, WED: REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR & BORGARFJÖRÐUR SAGA VALLEY (245 km/152 mls) At 09:00 meet your tour guide who shows the group the highlights of Iceland's exciting capital. Barnafoss – the Children’s falls, is nearby with its own tragic tale. We spend two nights in Borgarnes, West Iceland. The afternoon includes a lecture about Northern Lights. After dinner, we step into the hotel garden in search of the Northern Lights followed by a hot cup of chocolate or tea.

Day 3, THU: SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA & FJORD CRUISE (250 km/155 mls) The Snæfellsnes Peninsula “the peninsula of the snowy mountain“ juts out from Iceland’s west coast, like a long arm with a clenched fist at its tip, and is in many ways a microcosm of the whole island.

Day 4, FRI: GOLDEN CIRCLE, GEOTHERMAL TASTE & ICELANDIC HORSES (220 km/136 mls) Today we travel along the Hvalfjörður fjord.

Day 5, SAT: SOUTH ICELAND & EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL VOLCANO (220 km/136 mls) Today we travel along the South coast.

Day 6, SUN: SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK & VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER (280 km/174 mls) Today’s program is all about glaciers, ice and icebergs.

Day 7, MON: SOUTH SHORE, REYKJAVÍK & BLUE LAGOON (370 km/230 mls) From Kirkjubæjarklaustur we head across the Eldhraun lava field to the village of Vík, where we make a photo stop. Around midnight we reach Reykjavík, where you stay 2 nights.

Day 8, TUE: LEISURE DAY & NORTHERN LIGHTS FJORD CRUISE Enjoy a leisure day for exploring Iceland's capital, visit museums, do some shopping, go for spa treatments or take an optional whale watching tour. Included is a 2-3 hours Northern Lights hunt by boat to escape from the city lights.

Day 9, WED: VOLCANO CRATER, SEALS, FJORDS & MOUNTAINS (400 km/248 mls) Start the second part of the tour and travel west. Meet your tour guide and travel west, passing the town of Borgarnes and climb again the Grábrók volcano crater. We visit a natural history & seal museum and further north we stop at the turf church of Víðimýri. We travel along scenic fjords and over several challenging mountain passes until we reach Siglufjörður, Iceland’s northernmost town. We overnight at the new and beautifully located Hotel Siglo which offers spectacular geothermal hot tubs built into the local fjord. In the evening, if weather permits, we take a little walk or drive to search for the Northern Lights.

Day 10, THU: ICELAND'S NORTHERNMOST TOWN (170 km/106 mls) In the morning we explore Siglufjörður, Iceland’s northernmost town, known as the herring capital of the North Atlantic. In Siglufjörður we visit the herring museum, the largest seafaring and industrial museum in the country. In the afternoon we drive along Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord which offers an amazing mountain panorama and explore Tröllaskagi Peninsula. Along the way, we stop at a deserted fjord valley that even most Icelanders have not yet seen. Later we stop at a local brewery and taste one of Iceland's micro-beers. We continue to Lake Mývatn, a winter wonderland, where we stay for 3 nights. Join an evening lecture about Northern Lights and don't miss the chance to search for the magical auroras after dinner.

Day 11, FRI: SEARCH FOR THE TROLLS & SNOW ADVENTURES (30 km/19 mls) This morning we go for a snowshoe trip (or a normal hike if there is no snow) through the lava formations of Dimmuborgir “the dark castles”, hoping to get a glimpse of the trolls who are said to live there. The afternoon is free at leisure to explore the many pseudo craters or walk along the lake shores. Also available is an optional tour on cross-country skis or snow-mobiles. In the evening we take a relaxing soak at Lake Mývatn Nature Baths and get ready to chase the elusive Northern Lights.

Day 12, SAT: EXPLORE LAKE MÝVATN (50 km/31 mls) Lake Mývatn is known for its geological wonders and active bird life, but also for having Iceland's coldest temperatures. We take an easy walk through the bizarre lava formations and landscape with great views to the lake, bird life and trees. Later we explore the hot spring area of Námaskarð with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. We taste traditional dark bread baked underground in the geothermal heat. In the evening enjoy a video presentation about Northern Lights as a part of the Northern Lights educational program. After a delicious dinner, don't forget to keep an eye out for the Northern Lights.

Day 13, SUN: BIRDS, CHRISTMAS GARDEN & THE CAPITAL OF NORTH ICELAND (120 km/75 mls) We visit the Lake Mývatn bird museum and travel to Goðafoss, the waterfalls of the Gods. Next stop is the Christmas Garden, a small museum and shop where you find countless items connected to Icelandic Christmas traditions. The afternoon is free at leisure to explore Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland on your own. There are some excellent local museums and a great geothermal swimming pool. Depending on weather there is a short excursion into the darkness to hunt the Aurora Borealis.

Day 14, MON: HISTORY, DESIGN & HORSES IN SKAGAFJÖRÐUR (420 km/261 mls) We travel back west over the mountains to Skagafjörður, the valley of horses and home of many ancient farms. We visit the folk museum and turf farm at Glaumbær. Enjoy a guided tour through the only tannery in Europe which makes fish leather. Later we stop for coffee & cake at a horse farm, where we learn about the history and the special gaits of Icelandic horses. We reach Reykjavík depending on weather and road conditions between 18:00-20:00 where you stay one night in Iceland's capital.

But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event. ITINERARY: Day 1, TUE or THU: WELCOME TO ICELAND (50 km/31 mls) The Flybus shuttle (no guide) brings travelers from Keflavík International Airport to Guesthouse Borgartún or Hotel Cabin and Centerhotel Plaza in Reykjavík where you spend one night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own. Free shuttle bus from Guesthouse Borgartún/Hotel Cabin to downtown Reykjavík at 19:00 and back at 22:00.

Day 2, WED or FRI: REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR, THE BLUE LAGOON & REYKJANES PENINSULA (220 km/137 mls) At 09:00 meet your tour guide who shows the group the highlights of Iceland's exciting capital. Then head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, light houses and fishing villages. At the end of the day, we get to soak off our travels in the warm mineral waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. We stay for two nights in simple cottages in South Iceland. There is an option to upgrade to studio rooms at the Stracta Hotel in Hella. In the evening, we hear about the Northern Lights from our tour guide at Árhús Cottages. Naturally, once darkness falls, you are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights.

Day 3, THU or SAT: SOUTH ICELAND WITH OPTIONAL GLACIER HIKE (200 km/124 mls) Today we head along the south coast and reach the area near the active volcano that is beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. We stop at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which plunges from the mountain. Next we visit Skógar folk museums, which contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artifacts from Iceland's past and several turf-built houses. Nearby is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country; the 60 meter high Skógafoss waterfall. In the afternoon we offer an optional glacier walk. The Sólheimajökull glacier tongue extends from the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier, down to the sandy plains of the Icelandic south coast. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and majestic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. On this fun, safe and easy to moderate glacier walk you get to explore the wonderland of ice sculptures, water cauldrons, ridges and deep crevasses on the breath-taking Sólheimajökull glacier. While enjoying all the features of the glacier and its spectacular surroundings, you will learn more about the behavior of glaciers and their impact on nature. No technical requirements are needed for the tour as an experienced glacier guide will teach you how to use basic glacier equipment, such as crampons and an ice axe which are provided for glacier walk tours. The unique experience of a glacier walk on one of the many retreating glaciers of the world is sure to leave lasting memories. Duration of this activity is about 3 hours in total, about 90 minutes on the ice and about 30-40 min walk (one-way) from the parking lot to the glacier edge itself. Minimum age for the glacier hike is 10 years. You need to bring warm clothing, rain gear and hiking boots. We recommend to pre-book the glacier hike to secure space. The price is ISK 11.000 (about EUR 80 per person). Payment is due in Iceland with the guide.

If you booked the trip without the glacier hike, then the tour continues further south were you can stroll on the black lava beach to see the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara near Vík. In the evening there is another presentation about the Northern Lights. The grounds of Árhús Cottages and the Stracta Hotel in Hella are very large and dark and offer you a good location for Northern Lights search if the weather conditions are right. It requires patience, warm clothing and the excitement of "maybe there could be Northern Lights".

The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at 5-10 minutes intervals. Continue on to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá River and attracts tourists and travellers in summer and winter. Visit to the Volcano House in Reykjavík

ITINERARY: Day 1, SUN: WELCOME TO ICELAND (50 km/31 mls) The Flybus shuttle (no guide) brings travelers from Keflavík International Airport to the accommodation in Reykjavík where you spend the night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own, dinner suggestions too! Food lovers will be pleased and perhaps even impressed by the number of diverse restaurants in Reykjavík. Many award winning chefs create delicious Icelandic cuisine that is characterized by an imaginative use of local ingredients such as fresh seafood, organic lamb and wild game; but be sure to try the fabulous Icelandic hotdog and pizza too!

Day 2, MON: VOLCANO HOUSE & THE GOLDEN CIRCLE ROUTE (220 km/136 mls) At 08:30 meet our tour guide and start the escorted tour program with a short introduction to Icelandic geology while watching a striking film at the Reykjavik Volcano House documenting the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull and Fimmvörðuháls in 2010, which caused millions of people to be stranded worldwide as thousands of flights were cancelled. These films give a good insight into the general geology and volcanology of Iceland. At the Volcano House you can experience a hands-on geological exhibition and examine various pieces of pumice, ash and lava from Icelandic volcanoes. Later on we depart from Reykjavik and drive to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. Þingvellir is one of Iceland's most fascinating historical and geological places. The site is situated on the boundaries of the tectonic plates of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The faults and fissures of the area make the rifting of the earth's crust evident. Exploring the hot springs at Geysir is like watching a geography lesson in real life: natural springs bubble away in the ground until the pressure becomes too high and explode spectacularly. Geysir and Strokkur are the two biggest of the geysers there. While Geysir is no longer active, Strokkur still spouts every 5 to 15 minutes to the delight of visitors. Next we travel to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into a canyon. Further south we stop at the explosion crater called Kerið which is filled with water and resembles an ancient amphitheatre. After dinner we show a movie about Northern Lights as part of the Northern Lights educational program. Naturally, once darkness falls, we are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights. We stay for one night in simple cottages in South Iceland.

Day 3, TUE: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK & GLACIER LAGOON (385 km/239 mls) A long drive brings us to a world of glaciers, ice and icebergs. We travel to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs. We explore this extraordinary site and perhaps see seals swimming in the arctic waters. You can walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs get stranded. The Vatnajökull National Park is about 12,000 square kilometers and it is the largest National Park in Europe. In this area we find Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment and Europe's largest glacier. In the evening, you hear about the Northern Lights from our tour guide. Be careful not to go to bed too soon in this remote and quiet location, or you may just miss out one more chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky. We stay for one night in the Vatnajökull region.

Day 4, WED: SOUTH COAST (305 km/189 mls) We head across the Eldhraun lava field to the village of Vík where we make a photo stop. We take a stroll on the black lava beach and along the bird cliffs at Reynisfjara in South Iceland. We pass the glacier Mýrdalsjökull and the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajökull and continue to Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and belongs to the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Further west we reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall. In the evening you return to Reykjavik. An optional Northern Lights bus tour or fjord cruise can be booked on the spot, if the weather conditions are ideal. We stay one night in Iceland's capital.

INTINERARY Day 1, TUE: WELCOME to ICELAND (50 km/31 mls) Individual transfer by Flybus shuttle bus from Keflavik Airport to Icelandair Hotel Natura in Reykjavík where you spend the night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own. Dinner suggestions as well! Day 2, WED: BLUE LAGOON, LIGHT HOUSES & AURORA HUNT (220 km/136 mls) At 09:00 meet your tour guide and explore the Reykjanes peninsula with its many unusual geological features and moon-like landscapes. We stop for 3 hours at the famous Blue Lagoon for a soak in its warm geothermal water. We continue to the Reykjanes folk & maritime museum, located in a natural paradise, showing items which were essential for the livelihood on both land and sea. Next door to the museum are two beautiful light houses, surrounded by amazing ocean view. During the two hours journey to West Iceland our expert tour guide provides you with information about the Northern Lights and teaches you how to take photos of this natural phenomenon. Stay 2 nights Icelandair Hotel Hamar, near Borgarnes in West Iceland. After a 2-course dinner, join a torch walk into the darkness, soak in the hotel's outdoor hot tubs and check if the Northern Lights are visible. These spectacular sky-light shows are also known as the Aurora Borealis and are frequently seen in Iceland from September through April on clear and crisp nights. White and green are usually the dominant colours of Northern Lights but sometimes there are considerable color variations. They are ephemeral, however, sightings are not guaranteed. Day 3, THU: ICE CAVE EXPLORATION & BORGARFJÖRÐUR SAGA VALLEY (170 km/106 mls) Today we take you by bus and an 8-wheel drive monster truck to Langjökull glacier, Iceland’s second largest glacier, for a once in a lifetime adventure deep inside one of the world’s largest man made ice caverns. The caverns are composed of an extensive system of tunnels and chambers that stretch close to 300 metres into the solid ice cap towards a breath taking natural ice cave at the heart of the glacier. Making your way inside the glacier you are able to explore various nooks and chambers and see a huge ice crevasse. As you walk further along the tunnel, the ice gets older and its colour gradually changes from white to deep-blue. We also explore Borgarfjörður which is known as the Saga valley because of its many important historical events. We get a chance to visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring which produces 180 liters per second of water that is nearly boiling - 97° Celsius. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls pouring from beneath a wide lava field. Barnafoss – the Children’s falls, is nearby with its own tragic tale. In the evening, we step into the hotel garden in search of the Northern Lights followed by relaxing in the geothermal outdoor hot tubs and a hot cup of chocolate or tea.

Day 4, FRI: FONTANA STEAM BATHS, GOLDEN CIRCLE, SNOWMOBILE TOUR BY NIGHT (180 km/111 mls) Today we travel along the Hvalfjörður fjord. The first stop is at an Icelandic wool outlet store, just to see what they do with all those sheep! We continue inland to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and stop for a wellness retreat and lunch at the Fontana thermal baths. We travel the Golden Circle route and see steam rising from the Geysir geothermal fields as we arrive. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at 5-10 minutes intervals. On we travel to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river and attracts tourists and travellers in summer and winter. Overnight and dinner is at Hotel Gullfoss, a small countryside hotel in South Iceland. Tonight, we search for the elusive Northern Lights by snowmobile (two persons sharing a snowmobile), and experience a Viking winter wonderland amidst the peace and stillness of rural Iceland.

Day 5: SAT: KERIÐ VOLCANO AND GLACIER HIKE (230 km/143 mls) Today, we take you out along the South coast. The first stop is at the explosion crater called Kerið which is filled with water and resembles an ancient amphitheatre. We continue to Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. In the afternoon we take you on a glacier walk. While enjoying all the features of the glacier and its spectacular surroundings, you learn more about the behaviour of glaciers and their impact on nature. No technical requirements are needed for the tour as an experienced glacier guide teaches you how to use basic glacier equipment, such as crampons and an ice axe which are provided for glacier walk tours. Stay 2 nights Icelandair Vik in South Iceland. After a 2-course dinner, join a torch walk to the black lava beach and look out if the auroras are across the sky.

Day 6, SUN: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK & JÖKULSÁRLÓN GLACIER LAGOON (400 km/248 mls) Today’s program is all about glaciers, ice and icebergs. A long drive brings us to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, and we explore the extraordinary site and might see seals swimming in arctic waters. You can walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs get stranded. In the afternoon we spend time at Europe’s largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe's largest glacier. In the evening enjoy a film presentation about the Northern Lights as part of the Northern Lights educational program. Beware of not going to bed too soon or you may just miss out one more chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky.

Day 7, MON: SOUTH SHORE, REYKJAVÍK, PERLAN DINNER & NORTHERN LIGHTS BOAT TOUR (200 km/230 mls) From Vík we travel to Reynisfjara, a black lava beach with high bird cliffs and pounding waves. Further west we reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges from the mountain. In the afternoon we return to Reykjavik for a short city tour and some leisure time to explore Iceland's capital on our own, visit museums, do some shopping or simply rest after all this touring. Farewell dinner at Perlan Panorama restaurant, followed by a 2-3 hours Northern Lights hunt by boat to escape from the city lights. Around midnight we return to Icelandair Hotel Natura for one last night.

ACCOMMODATION Superior tourist-class hotels – in rooms with shower/wc. Reykjavík: Icelandair Hotel Natura for first and last night / West Iceland: Icelandair Hotel Hamar (2 nights) / South Iceland: Hotel Gullfoss (1 night) and Icelandair Hotel Vik (2 nights). This hotel list is subject to change. NORTHERN LIGHTS The Northern Lights are visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. The tour is dependent on weather and therefore sightings are not guaranteed. Like many natural wonders, it is an ephemeral spectacle – the Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event.

AURORAS & GLACIAL LAGOON 28.12.2016-01.01.2017 Iceland is the perfect place to enjoy a winter trip full of adventure, icy landscapes and the chance to see the elusive Northern Lights. This unique island in the North Atlantic is one of the world's most sparsely populated countries and has extensive volcanic and geothermal activity. Geologically speaking, Iceland is one of the youngest countries in the world since it only began to rise from the North Atlantic seabed about 25 million years ago. It is the product of volcanic eruptions that are still ongoing. On average, a volcano in Iceland erupts every five years, fortunately rarely where anyone lives. Why not explore the land of fire and ice with guided visits to volcanoes, lava fields, hot springs and magnificent glaciers? During this tour you visit Iceland's most popular sites such as the Golden Circle route, the South coast and Vatnajökull national park. On route you see cascading waterfalls, smoking geysers, colourful volcano craters, a spectacular ice lagoon with floating icebergs and black lava beaches, all set against a backdrop of glistering glaciers and restless geology. Besides, there is always a thrilling potential for the night sky to be decorated with the jewels of the amazing aurora borealis. Imagine the excitement to search for the most spectacular - and natural - light show on earth. Cross your fingers for clear skies, wrap up warm, and don't forget your camera with a tripod when you try to catch sight of the Northern Lights in Iceland. New Year's Eve is spent in Reykjavik including a festive dinner at Kopar Restaurant at Reykjavík down town harbour. This is a good location to stroll around Reykjavik at midnight, follow the crowd to the best party places and of course witness the "crazy" fireworks in Iceland's capital.

Highlights and Experiences: Golden Circle tour with Thingvellir national park, Geysir hot springs, Gullfoss waterfall and Kerið volcano crater

South coast with glaciers, waterfalls and lava beaches

Vatnajökull national park with Europe's largest glacier and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon

2-nights stay in the countryside, ideal for Northern Lights hunting

2 evenings of lectures, presentations, film and guided Northern Lights searches

Visit to multimedia presentation at the Volcano House in Reykjavík

Visit to Kerið volcano crater

Festive New Year's eve dinner at Kopar Restaurant at Reykjavik downtown harbour Day 1, December 28th: WELCOME (50 km/31 mls) The Flybus shuttle brings you from Keflavík International Airport to the accommodation in Reykjavík where you spend the night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's exciting capital on your own, dinner suggestions too! Day 2, December 29th: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE ROUTE (220 km/136 mls) At 08:30 meet your tour guide and start the escorted tour program with short introduction to Icelandic geology while watching a striking film at the Reykjavik Volcano House documenting the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull and Fimmvörðuháls in 2010, which caused millions of people to be stranded worldwide as thousands of flights were cancelled. These films give a good insight into the general geology and volcanology of Iceland. At the Volcano House you can experience a hands-on geological exhibition where you can examine various pieces of pumice, ash and lava from Icelandic volcanoes. Later on we depart Reykjavik for Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and where the Althing, the oldest legislative assembly in the world was founded. This is one of Iceland's most fascinating places both geologically and for the role it plays in the country's history and sense of national identity. Thingvellir is also remarkable for reasons of natural science, as the site is part of a fissure zone running through Iceland, and is situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The faults and fissures of the area make evident the rifting of the earth's crust.

Exploring the hot springs at Geysir is like watching a geography lesson in real life: natural springs bubbling away in the ground until the pressure becomes too much – and they explode in spectacular style. Geysir and Strokkur are the two biggest of the geysers there. While Geysir no longer is active, Strokkur still spouts every 5 to 15 minutes to the delight of visitors. Next we travel to Gullfoss, "the golden falls", which is a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river. Gullfoss is one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls. The explosion crater called Kerið is filled with water and resembles an ancient amphitheatre. In the evening, you hear about

the Northern Lights from your tour guide. Naturally, once darkness falls, you are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights. We stay for one night in simple cottages in South Iceland. Day 3, December 30th: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK & GLACIER LAGOON (385 km/239 mls) A long drive brings us to a world of glaciers, ice and icebergs. We travel to Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs. We explore this extraordinary site and perhaps see seals swimming in the arctic waters. You can walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs get stranded. The Vatnajökull National Park is about 12,000 square kilometers and it is the largest National Park in Europe. In this area we find Iceland's highest mountains, an alpine environment and Europe's largest glacier. Tonight you can enjoy a movie presentation about Northern Lights as a part of the Northern Lights educational program. Be careful not to go to bed too soon in this remote and quiet location, or you may just miss out one more chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky. We stay for one night at Fosshotel Núpar in the Vatnajökull region. Day 4, December 31st: SOUTH COAST & NEW YEAR'S DINNER (305 km/189 mls) Today, we head across the Eldhraun lava field to the village of Vík where we make a photo stop. We take a stroll on the black lava beach and see the bird cliffs at Reynisfjara beach in South Iceland. We pass the glacier Mýrdalsjökull and the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajökull and continue to Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and belongs to the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Further west we reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. There is a trail that goes behind the fall which is interesting – if you are prepared to get wet! In the evening you return to Reykjavik for one last night. A transfer bus will bring you at 20:15 to the New Year's Eve dinner at Kopar Restaurant, located at the downtown harbour. This is the perfect location to stroll in the center, follow to crowd to the best parties and enjoy the "crazy" and one of kind fireworks in Iceland's capital. Return to the hotel on your own. (Please note that this program is not suitable for visiting the Reykjavík bonfires on New Year's Eve). Day 5, January 1st: DEPARTURE HOME (50 km/31 mls) Individual transfer by Flybus airport shuttle from your guesthouse accommodation in Reykjavík to Keflavík Airport. It is also possible to extend the program in Reykjavík.

We spend two nights in Hella, a small village in South Iceland where you will be able to discover and experience how Icelandic countryside people celebrate New Year's Eve. We promise that even in a casual program the meals and drinks will be delicious. Oops, did we mention the Northern Lights? Árhús cottages in Hella are located in a large and dark garden where it is very easy to see the Northern Lights, also called Aurora Borealis, if the weather conditions are suitable. Our expert tour guide provides you also with a fact seminar about the Northern Lights and gives you some tips how to take photos of this natural phenomenon. On the 1st of January the program includes a 6-course culinary experience at the Perlan revolving restaurant offering amazing panoramic views over Iceland's capital. We look forward celebrating with you the start of 2017 in the Icelandic countryside. Note: there is an upgrade option for lodging at Hotel Plaza in Reykjavik and Stracta Hotel in Hella (limited amount of rooms available).

ITINERARY: Day 1, December 29th: WELCOME (50 km/31 mls) The Flybus shuttle (no guide) brings travellers from Keflavík International Airport to the guesthouse accommodation in Reykjavík where you spend one night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own. Free shuttle bus from the guesthouse to downtown Reykjavík at 19:00 and back at 22:00. Then we head out to the Reykjanes peninsula with its hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, light houses and fishing villages. At the end of the day, we get to soak off our travels in the warm blue waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. We stay for two nights in simple cottages in South Iceland. (Upgrade option with lodging at Stracta Hotel in Hella).

In the evening you have a presentation about the Northern Lights. If the night is clear, step out in the garden and check if the Northern Lights are visible. Also, known as the Aurora Borealis, these spectacular sky-light shows can frequently be seen in Iceland from September through April on clear and crisp nights. White and green are usually the dominant colours of northern lights but sometimes there are considerable colour variations. They are ephemeral, however, sightings are not guaranteed. The grounds of Arhús cottages and Stracta Hotel in Hella are very large and dark that offers you a good location for Northern Lights search if the weather conditions are right. It requires patience, warm clothing and the excitement of "maybe there could be Northern Lights".

Day 3, December 31st: SOUTH ICELAND & NEW YEARS CELEBRATIONS (200 km/124 mls) After breakfast we head along the South coast and get out near the active volcano that is beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. We stop at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which plunges over the mountain. There's a trail that goes behind the falling water and offers interesting views, if you are prepared to get wet! Further east we visit one of Iceland's finest folk museums. This museum contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artifacts typical of Iceland's past, as well as turf-built houses. Nearby is Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. We continue to the seaside and stroll on the black lava beach to see the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara near Vík.

In the evening we celebrate New Year the Icelandic way. Before dinner we join a guided bus tour to visit the bonfires in the villages of Hvolsvöllur and Hella. The traditional Brenna bonfires of New Year's Eve have their origins in the Middle Ages when people built bonfires to burn the old things they no longer needed. In Iceland there are bonfires all around the country where inhabitants gather, shoot off fireworks, sing and dance as they wait for the New Year to come in.

Your festive 4-course dinner starts around 20:30 and is served at Árhús Restaurant on the river banks in Hella, which is a small village in South Iceland. Around 23:30 one of the local rescue team members joins our group and lights our own small fireworks. Afterwards we walk through the village and celebrate New Year with a bang when at midnight the sky opens with thousands of fireworks set off across the village by the local inhabitants. This is an experience of a life time, you will never forget. Drink a toast of sparkling wine as you enjoy a real special Icelandic New Year's celebration. (Note that guests at Stracta Hotel join all festivities at Árhús Restaurant).

If the night is clear, you might be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens in dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes.

Day 4, January 1st: GOLDEN CIRCLE & CULINARY EXPERIENCE AT THE PEARL (210 km/130 mls) Today we travel the Golden circle route. You see steam from the Geysir geothermal fields as you arrive. There are a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. You continue to Gullfoss "the golden falls", a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river, and attracts tourists and travellers in summer and winter. We travel inland to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site before returning to Reykjavík for one night. Overnight at Guesthouse Borgartún. (Upgrade option with lodging at Centerhotel Plaza in Reykjavik).

In a glass dome set on top of hot water tanks on a hilltop overlooking Iceland's capital, you find the Pearl, or Perlan Restaurant.
