Centennial Campaign Tops $13 Million
We’re excited to announce that THe CenTennial CaMPaiGn FOR eSF has passed the $13 million milestone for donations, successfully closing out the first year of the public phase of the campaign.
Our many generous alumni and friends have made reaching this milestone possible. Gifts to the College range from cash, appreciated stock, and property to planned gifts including bequests, and charitable trusts.
Significant progress has been made in securing donations in several major fundraising objectives for the campaign.
• academic innovation. Over $7.5M of the $10M goal has been donated.
• Scholarships. Over $3.2M of the $4M goal has been donated.
• Flexible Resources. Over $1.9M of the $3M goal has been donated.
• Campus Facilities. Recent promotion of the completed Centennial Hall student residence and the almost completed Gateway Center have resulted in over $350K of donations.
To learn more about these campaign objectives, be sure to check out Giving to ESF on the ESF web site, and contact us anytime to explore ways of supporting ESF your way.

WilliaM M. SHielDS, an accomplished scientist, dedicated researcher and outstanding professor, has been inspiring ESF students for decades.
Dr. Shields, who has been teaching at ESF since 1979, was selected as the 2012 recipient of the ESF College Foundation Award for Exceptional Achievement in Teaching. “The Foundation Award” was established in 1999 to celebrate the accomplishments of ESF faculty, and winners receive a cash award of $1,000.
Dr. Shields, who is a professor in the Department of Environmental and Forest Biology, teaches the very popular Principles of Animal Behavior undergraduate course. He does not lecture in the traditional way, but instead poses important questions to engage his students. He is not interested in opinion, or necessarily a correct answer, but in carefully thought-out arguments. Whether in or out of class, he teaches students to think critically, which is why so many ESF undergrads have pursued careers in animal behavior and evolutionary biology.
Dr. Shields was Director and co-Director of the Cranberry Lake Biological Station for many years, where he also taught ornithology for 16 years and mentored dozens of undergraduates in their independent research projects. His emphasis on independent undergraduate research is an important legacy at this station today. He is also an expert on the use of DNA in legal cases and has consulted in many criminal cases that involve DNA evidence.

CHelSea anDeRSSOn, a third-year student in the Landscape Architecture department at ESF, is a recipient of the Nan Dorr Memorial and Syracuse Garden Club Scholarship.
A $100,000 endowed scholarship was created by a donation from Dr. Patrick (Paddy) Dorr, in coordination with the Syracuse Garden Club, in 2010 after the passing of his wife, Nan.
In remarks she gave at the 2012 Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon, Andersson said she was astonished to be honored with the scholarship, given that she’s surrounded by remarkable classmates at ESF.
“So many students at ESF are involved as club officers, team members, leaders, work part-time jobs and still manage to excel in their academics,” she said.
“These are the characteristics of an ESF student, and to us, these involvements are not weighty obligations, they’re just a part of what we do. We do these things because we love them.”
“Whether you are a designer of landscape, or paper, or a researcher, we all have an idea, a passion for what drives us to improve our world. But those ideas would only stay ideas if there weren’t people who believed in us. For this I want to tremendously thank all of the donors, and especially the Syracuse Garden Club who are here for me today, for their contribution to the students.”

More than a decade ago, then ESF professor and chair of Forest and Natural Resources Management Bill Bentley created two scholarship funds in memory of his parents to benefit ESF students.
The Jay anD Olive BenTley SCHOlaRSHiP is given to graduate students in professional masters programs in the Forest and Natural Resources Management department. The Olive M. Bentley Scholarship and Chair’s Award named after Bentley’s mother “a feisty, bright woman who combined botanical science with the liberal arts,” recognizes leadership and academic performance at the Ranger School and helps recruit female students. Bentley, now professor-emeritus, told the audience at the April 2012 ESF Scholarship & Donors Luncheon about his decision to create endowments in memory of his parents.
“My parents would have loved ESF and its mix of high-quality academics, practical skills and user-friendly size. As ESF’s centennial approached, I realized that we would also be celebrating the 100th birthday of both parents. And while they are no longer here, I think they would be pleased with the additions to the Jay and Olive Funds as a fitting birthday present.”

For aaROn R. vOGel – who grew up with a passion for all things outdoors – ESF was a perfect fit.
Aaron, a landscape architecture
graduate in 1992, in 1996 began working as an intern at the Thousand Islands Land Trust, which is dedicated to conserving the natural beauty, wildlife habitats and recreational opportunities of the Thousand Islands region.
Because of his obvious skills and love of the St. Lawrence River, he landed a full-time job as Land Steward, and then became a vital member of the leadership of TILT, ultimately being promoted to Executive Director in 2005.
After his sudden passing at the age of 39 in 2008, his wife, Robin Hoffman, at the suggestion of two of Aaron’s ESF classmates and friends – Richard Schipul and Warren Timlen – established the Aaron R. Vogel Scholarship, which supports students preparing for careers in land protection and those landscape architecture students studying abroad – a program he loved.
“He really valued the education he received at ESF,” said Robin, an ESF professor of landscape architecture. “The scholarship is the best way to honor his memory.”
Susan Smith, TILT president, said Aaron “always put his passion for the Thousand Islands ahead of everything else... he will certainly be remembered for his professional talents as well as his wonderful sense of humor. It was a privilege to work with him.”
Gifts are still being accepted to the Aaron R. Vogel Scholarship Fund.

When Bob Unsworth (class of ‘84) attended ESF; he spent a lot of time studying in the F. Franklin Moon Library. In fact, so did his future wife, Lisa, class of ‘84 at Syracuse University, whom he met freshman year.
Thanks to his hard work and great professors at ESF, Bob went on to get his master’s in forest science from Yale and today is an environmental economist with the Cambridge, Mass. consulting firm Industrial Economics, Inc. Lately, he’s been working on the Gulf oil spill, and he also does “damage models” on large-scale forest fires, among other assignments.
“I took full advantage of the courses at ESF,” said Bob, who particularly recalls lessons learned from professors Hugh Canham and Ralph Nyland. “I have extremely positive memories of the school.”
Bob and Lisa, who is an advertising executive, in the past year donated $25,000 to improve Room 103 in Moon Library and to create a quiet study environment. The room will be named THe UnSWORTH QUieT STUDy aRea.
“We spent a lot of time in that library,” Bob said. “We’re very aware that the modest tuition I paid in the 1980s didn’t cover the cost of the exceptional education I got. I felt like I was in a very special place.”

Does high boat traffic harm -- or otherwise affect -- local fish populations?
TeReSSa PUCylOWSki, an ESF senior in the Honors Program, is working on that topic for an honors thesis that she hopes will be published in a scientific journal.
Using an underwater camera, field laptop and other field measurement tools, Teressa this past summer recorded sights and sounds to calibrate the effect of boat and jet-ski noise on blue gill, yellow perch, and largemouth bass, the most abundant fish species in Oneida Lake north of Syracuse.
The Honors Program, which purchased those tools and will pass them on to other students for future studies, is being transformed through Centennial Campaign gifts from Doug ‘68 and Dana Dellmore and Jesse ‘79 and Betsy ‘79 Fink.
Their generosity bolsters a key goal of the Centennial Campaign -- to create an Honors Program that excites the imagination and motivation of students and provides them with experiences that promote exceptional academic and personal growth.
“I think it’s the best school for environmental science,” Teressa, a major in conservation biology, said of ESF. “It’s like one giant community learning center. It’s a good atmosphere here. It’s a small school, but not too small. I felt I could get the most out of it.”

During the 2012-2013 academic year, the SUny-eSF RanGeR SCHOOl will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. Established in 1912, the Ranger School established the very first forest technology program of its kind to be recognized by the American Society of Foresters, and is now the longest running program in the United States. Located in Wanakena, NY, students gain much of their education and experience on the 2,800 acre forest in the Adirondack Mountains.
The vision for the Ranger School of long-time director James F. Dubuar was “to train men to fill the gap between the average woodsman and the professional forester.” Through the years the School has evolved to fulfill this vision and so much more. In addition to its Forest Technology Program, a Surveying program was added in 1995, and a program in Environmental and Natural Resource Conservation began in the fall of 2011.
To learn more about the school and how you can support with your charitable donations, be sure to check out the Ranger School at www.esf.edu/rangerschool/.

Not too long ago, Bill and CaROl DUGan knew almost nothing about ESF. In fact, when Bill went to football games at the Carrier Dome, he had no idea he was walking across the ESF campus from his parking lot.
But the Dugans, who live in Tully south of Syracuse, learned a lot about ESF – and the quality of its teachers, staff and students – when their son, Mike, attended the college in the late 1990’s.
Today, they’re loyal donors to the annual fund, and they now have an unrestricted pledge of $15,000 to the Centennial Campaign over a period of five years. “To me, the five-year plan is perfect because it makes it easier for us to make a significant gift to the campaign,” Bill said. “Plus, our pledge payments are broken down into monthly charges that are automatically billed to our credit card. That makes giving really convenient and affordable.”
The Dugans have one other big connection to the college – son Mike is now Coordinator of Annual Giving at ESF. But even if he wasn’t working for his alma mater, Bill and Carol would support the college because of its quality, the environmental projects it tackles, and the fact that students get a hands-on education.
“We really appreciate all the things they’re involved with including the willow project and the (Onondaga) lake project,” Carol said. “Even if Michael wasn’t there, we’d still be interested in supporting ESF.”

The relationship between ESF and O’BRien & GeRe has been rock solid for years, even dating before Dr. Cornelius Murphy’s move from head of the Syracuse company to President of ESF in 2000: O’Brien & Gere has been generous in its financial support, and ESF has supplied O’Brien & Gere with a steady stream of fresh talent – the company now employs 42 ESF grads.
And this past year, O’Brien & Gere gave a $150,000 gift to support the Centennial Campaign. A graduate fellowship has been established to support students in Environmental Engineering, and a meeting room in the new Gateway Center conference facility has been named the O’Brien & Gere Room.
O’Brien & Gere, an engineering and product delivery company with about 900 employees and more than $200 million in annual revenues, was founded in 1945 in Syracuse.
“O’Brien & Gere believes that in order to be a good corporate citizen, the Company must participate actively by making financial and resource contributions, engaging in public policy dialogue, and providing education assistance to institutions like SUNY-ESF in the communities in which employees, clients, and other value chain partners work and live,” said Jim Fox, Chairman and CEO of O’Brien & Gere.

An excellent student, member of the ESF soccer team and recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Award for outstanding academic and athletic achievement, kaley DOnOvan, ‘12, last summer worked as the “Sage Apprentice” at ESF Adirondack Ecological Center in Newcomb, N.Y.
Established in 2002 in memory of Dick Sage, the former associate director of the AEC, the Richard W. Sage, Jr. Apprenticeship Fund provides meaningful professional field experience to the recipients.
Kaley led a field team that studied loons, owls, salamanders, mice and other small mammals to feed facts to a database of wildlife that tracks species’ populations and how they’re affected by different environmental factors on the 15,000-acre preserve.
A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Kaley learned a lot from the internship. “I learned a lot of field skills,” she said. “I gained a lot from it.”
Kaley’s internship ended at the close of August, but the following week, she began a new job as assistant program manager at the AEC’s interpretive center. In her new job, she talks with visitors at the center and develops new programs, among other things.
“I just hope to continue working in conservation and land protection to preserve biodiversity for wildlife,” she said.

After graduating from ESF in 1971, Frank Cean launched a career in the paper industry, culminating in his ownership of Knowlton Specialty Papers, in Watertown, which he sold in 2008. Over the years, Frank mentored many young people in careers in business, shepherding several to ESF, including some of the leadership of what has become Knowlton Technologies, Engineered Composites & Media. Last year FRank anD ann Cean made a major gift that will create a new residence for students and re-searchers at ESF’s Thousands Islands Biological Station (TIBS) on the St. Lawrence River. In making the new TIBS residence possible, Frank noted that “This gift brings together two of our passions – ESF and fishing the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.”
