EARTHSHINE PURPOSE STATEMENT
Earthshine is a private preschool that is devoted to providing your family
with the highest quality early care and education available. The
administration and staff mutually support each other and work together to
create a healthy, safe, and appropriate environment for young children. We
share a theoretical and practical ideology called “best practice” and our
policies, procedures, and daily routines are created to help us best
adhere to these principles. Earthshine follows enhanced program and
educational standards to ensure higher quality care and developmentally
appropriate education. We believe that children learn best through play
and positive interactions with others. Providing hands on learning
activities and opportunities to develop appropriate social interactions
are keys to successful learning experiences for the children at
Earthshine.
EARTHSHINE’S PHILOSOPHY
Our method of teaching is a “hands-on” approach. Children, as most
people, learn easiest and have more fun when they learn by open-ended
exploration of the concept. All materials and activities provide the
child with opportunities for learning through the use of an activity or
material that encourages the child to repeat until mastery of the task is
developed. Children are guided through learning at their own pace,
interest level, and individual needs and abilities.
Our main educational goal is to foster a desire for learning within each
child and enrich his/her self-esteem. Therefore our teachers work closely
with our children to insure that each child is treated fairly and has the
same opportunities as other students to learn and play. We expect children
to have good behavior and we teach them how to interact with others
appropriately. Our goal is to teach them to use kindness and patience when
interacting with others, including teachers, friends, and family members.
We present information through games and activities which involve the
child. Your child may not necessarily bring home a paper or craft every
day; please understand that does not mean “they did nothing” at school
that day. What it means is that the child is a participant, not just an
observer, and is involved in a variety of creative learning activities.
CURRICULUM STATEMENT
Earthshine Learning Center uses the curriculum guide: Explorations with
Young Children; A Curriculum Guide from the Bank Street College of
Education along with a strong emphasis on the Montessori philosophy and
model of education. The goals of our curriculum are multi-faceted. Our
goals encourage children to be enthusiastic, self-confident, independent
learners and we believe that play is the primary mode of learning. Our
curriculum also respects individual learning styles and ever-changing
interests. Through our curriculum we promote growth in all areas of
development including:
social: to help children learn from adults and one another by observation,
imitation, and interaction.
emotional: to provide a safe and secure environment where children can
develop pride, self-confidence, independence, self-control, and a positive
attitude toward life.
cognitive: to promote curiosity and to help children acquire learning
skills, such as the abilities to solve problems, make choices, ask
questions, and express their ideas, observations, and feelings.
physical: to help children develop and enhance their small and large
muscle skills and feel confident and comfortable with their own bodies.
Our curriculum goals are achieved through integrated, theme-based
activities and conversations with adults and children. Opportunities exist
within the classroom for the child to engage in one-on-one activities with
the teacher, small group and large group activities, solitary and
independent play allowing for opportunities to experiment and explore.
Whole group activities are for short periods of time and are suited to the
age and ability of the children. Supervised free play and small groups
predominate as a means of encouraging educational interaction.
THE DIRECTOR
Earthshine Learning Center is owned by Julie and Paul Turlington. Julie is
the on-site director and responsible for the daily operations at the
Center. Julie has a Masters of Education in Child and Family Studies and
Special Education from UNC Charlotte. She also has an early childhood
credential from the North Carolina Center for Montessori Teacher Education
and is a certified early childhood educator by the American Montessori
Society. Julie has worked in many aspects of early care and education
since 1996 and Earthshine is the best parts of all of them. Paul and Julie
have a son, Cole and live in Eastover. Our family is devoted to providing
a great place for your children to learn and grow every day. We respect
the trust you place in us.
OUR TEACHERS
Earthshine teachers and assistants are educated in early childhood
education and work hard to provide a safe and happy learning environment
for the children. Our teachers are devoted to preparing the environment,
the children, the schedule and themselves to ensure they are providing the
most appropriate learning experiences for the children. Each teacher
adheres to a professional development plan and participates in a yearly
performance evaluation to ensure continued success. Earthshine teachers
are devoted to providing a nurturing and comfortable place for your child
to come every day.
OUR CLASSROOMS
Our students are divided into three groups. The infant/toddlers, the wee-
schoolers and the preschoolers. They are all multi-aged, fully inclusive
learning environments. The infant/toddler classroom is for children ages 2
months to 30 months. Most children in the wee-school room are between the
ages of 2 and 3 and the preschoolers are 3.6 and up. The physical space,
materials and equipment are designed specifically to meet the needs of
young children. Each child is supported so they are able to fully
participate at their own pace and in a manner that meets their individual
needs. Observation rooms are available to allow parents and other
observers to watch the classroom without interrupting them.
ENROLLMENT PROCEEDURES
Registration takes place in May for the following school year that begins
September 1. Currently enrolled students will be placed in the first
available spots, in their age group, for the year they are enrolling.
Siblings of enrolled children will be placed next as space is available.
If no space is available the siblings of enrolled students will be placed
on the list with priority. Other children will be placed in order of paid
registration and placed on a waiting list in the same order. Children will
be offered a position as they become available in your child’s age group.
Prior to the child starting at Earthshine parents must attend a meeting
with the Director to discuss policies and answer questions. A non-
refundable registration fee must be paid and all application forms must be
returned fully completed prior to the meeting with the Director. The
child’s medical exam and immunization records must be returned within 20
days. Any child without a current medical exam form or proper immunization
forms in place will not be able to attend after 30 days until the form is
completed and returned to the Director.
The registration fee and the place on the waiting list are forfeited if
the available spot is not accepted within 2 weeks of the center notifying
the family of the open spot. If the child is not able to attend when their
spot is available the parent may request the child be placed on the bottom
of the waiting list. It is the parent’s responsibility to inform the
center of any changes to the contact information available to us. We are
not responsible if the contact information is not correct and your child’s
space is given to the next available child on the waiting list.
Children are required to visit the center at least one time prior to
enrollment. The Director and/or the teacher may request additional visits
to help the child acclimate to the environment.
Earthshine Learning Center does not discriminate against any child or
family based on race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, national
origin, religion or disability.

Resource Section
DISENROLLMENT
Children that do not register by the registration deadline will not be
allowed to return to school after the last day of the current registration
term. This date varies and written notice will be given to parents.
Children with recurring behavior problems may be dismissed at the
discretion of the director.
TWO WEEKS NOTICE: A 2 week written notice is required to terminate
enrollment.
INCLUSION AND DEVELOPMENTAL THERAPIES
Earthshine is a fully inclusive child care center that attempts to meet
the needs of children with special needs. We will make every effort to
provide care for children with physical, mental, behavioral, and emotional
delays or disabilities. There are limitations to the care we are able to
provide, so special needs should be discussed with the Director prior to
enrollment. Earthshine provides space for developmental therapist and work
with the therapy providers to help meet the developmental needs and
IFSP/IEP goals of the children in our care.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT REQUIREMENTS
Both parents are requested to attend the parent/ Director Enrollment
meeting to insure compliance and understanding of the policies of
Earthshine Learning Center.
Parents are encouraged to provide feedback about the things you like and
the things you think will help us to serve our children and families
better. Any feedback or suggestions will be discussed among staff at our
monthly staff meetings.
Parents are a big part of the learning process and the success of their
child’s educational experience. Parents and other family members are
encouraged to visit and volunteer their time to the center or come by for
lunch. Our doors are always locked but you are always welcome. Visitors
should call ahead and ring the bell upon arrival. Visitors must also sign
our guest book and may be asked to show proper identification.
Earthshine provides many enrichment experiences for our families. Field
trips, special events, and other activities are planned throughout the
year and parents and family are encouraged to participate and support your
child’s experience at Earthshine.
Parent/teacher conferences are held in the Spring and as necessary during
the year.
Parents are asked to read to their child every night for at least 10
minutes. Children who are encouraged to listen to and participate in
stories and books become better readers. It is important to help them
enjoy reading at an early age to promote lifelong readers.
DROP-OFF/ PICK-UP
Morning Drop-off: Full day children may be dropped off beginning at 6:30
am. Parents are required to sign children in upon arrival. Parents should
escort their child to the classroom unless a teacher is in the lobby to
greet you. Preschool only and part-time students may be dropped off
between 8:10 and 8:30am.
Preschool only children are to be picked up between 2:20 and 2:35. Parents
should use the circle pick up line to wait for students to be brought out
to the car. Note late fees apply to children not picked up by 2:40.

are permitted additional time if arrangements are made in advance.
Children who are required to be picked up at 2:30 will be charged at a

Parents may make arrangements prior to leaving the child to ensure space
is available and to avoid the late fee. If arrangements are made before
9:00 am on the day care is needed, the rate for extended care is $10.00
per hour or any portion of that hour.
LUNCHES AND SNACKS
Lunchtime begins at approximately 11:15 each day. Parents are responsible
for providing their child with a simple but nutritious lunch in a soft
lunchbox. The lunch should include an ice pack in a zip lock baggie with
any items that must be kept cold until served. The baggie and the outside
of the lunchbox should be clearly labeled with your child’s name and the
DATE. Candy and sweets are not permitted. Lunches are required to meet the
Meal Patterns for Children in Child Care Programs as recommended by the
USDA. All lunches will be supplemented with additional food unless you
sign a waiver to opt out of the nutrition program. A copy of the meal
patterns and the “opt out” form will be provided in your admission packet.
Your child’s special dietary needs should be addressed with the child’s
lead teacher.
All snacks are nutritious and served with water. Children in care for more
than 10 hours will be provided an additional evening snack.
Birthday snacks are permitted with approval from the teacher. All items
brought to share with others must be purchased from a source that is
inspected by a local health department or other government regulatory
agency (grocery store, restaurant, bakery, etc.) and in its original

OTHER IMPORTANT POLICY INFORMATION:
Discipline and Behavior Management
Earthshine’s goal toward behavior management is not to punish children for
wrong behavior but rather to set expectations for behavior and teach them
appropriate and acceptable behavior. Setting expectations, allowing
freedom to make choices, and learning from their actions are how children
learn how they are supposed to behave and are key to preventing
inappropriate behaviors. Discipline and behavior management are an ongoing
daily part of classroom management by the teachers.
Children are encouraged to resolve conflict with compromise. Talking about
the problem and solutions with an adult present and being certain that
everyone is satisfied with the result or outcome are helpful in allowing
children to have less conflict in the first place and learn to avoid
conflict in the future.
Training appropriate behavior management techniques, practicing these
techniques, and supporting each other when a child’s behavior is not able
to be managed alone. Earthshine teachers are consistent with expectations
for the children and work together to support the children following the
rules. We have a nurturing and responsive environment that supports social
and emotional development in the young children in our care.
Inappropriate behavior that is unable to be corrected through appropriate
behavior management techniques, as determined by the director, will be
cause for disenrollment from the program.

teachers of any injuries your child may have when you drop them off.
No Smoking or Tobacco use is allowed on the premises of Earthshine
Learning Center by Parents or Staff.
Emergency Care and Information
Emergency numbers and information is posted by each phone and in a
notebook in each classroom. Included in the notebook, which is to be taken
with the teacher in the event of an emergency, is a copy of each child’s
emergency contact information and other important emergency contact
information.
The Director and Lead teacher will make every attempt to contact each
person on the child’s emergency contact form, however, in the event no-one
can be reached in a timely manner we will make every effort to provide the
best possible care for your child and all the children.
In the event there is an emergency at Earthshine the staff will make all
attempts to provide safety and supervision for the children first. Parents
and/or emergency contacts will be contacted as quickly as is prudent for
the situation.
All emergency procedures are reviewed with the staff twice each year and
as needed during the year. The EPR plan will be followed for Ready-to=go
files will be maintained in each classroom.

Learn to play…play to learn…love to
learn!
WELCOME TO EARTHSHINE
We are excited to be starting a new school year at Earthshine Learning Center. For the
first several weeks we will be discussing expectations for the classroom. We will be
explaining procedures and how things work in the classroom. Sharing, being kind to
others, respecting other people and the work they are doing and other aspects of
“classroom management”. In our classroom, we call all the items on the shelves, “work”.
We feel that a child’s play is “work” and that we should respect it in that way. The
objective is to provide your child with hands on practice with a “work” for every
learning experience. Our goal is to provide your child activities that are based on
skill level and individual interests…”follow the child” (Maria Montessori), while
providing an overall view of the world and being a good citizen in it. A few items you
need to know:
✓ Arrival: Drop-off is begins at 6:45am for full day children and at 8:10 for all
part-time and preschool only students. Please be sure you sign your child in and
escort them to their room unless a teacher is present to accept your child in the
lobby or circle drive.
✓ Attendance: Please be sure to sign your child in and out every day. It is helpful
if you call or let us know in advance that your child will not be at school
✓ Parent/ Teacher Communication: Drop-off and pick-up are very busy times. Teachers
are not usually available to discuss things with parents during drop off and pick
up times. If you would like to speak with your child’s teacher please leave a note
and she will get in touch with you as quickly as she can.
✓ Lunch: Parents are responsible for their child’s lunch. Please use a soft
lunchbox with an ice pack and include nutritious food. Each meal should include
protein, fruit, vegetables, and dairy. Please put items that need refrigeration in
a baggie and clearly label with name and date. Limited or no sugar and no
chocolate, please. We provide juice, milk, and water.
✓ Snacks: We serve a morning and an afternoon snack daily. Please provide snacks
for both. Special snacks are permitted for special occasions but must be purchased/
prepared in a commercial kitchen and you should notify us in advance if you are
planning to bring a snack.
✓ Inside Shoes: You may send a pair of slippers of comfy shoes to wear while we are
inside.
✓ Extra Clothes: Please send your child an extra set of clothes including shirt,
pants, underwear, and socks in a plastic bag labeled with your child’s name. Please
check your supply often to be certain they still fit and will be appropriate for
the season.
✓ Nap Items: Please provide a crib sheet, small blanket and a soft toy for your child
to have at nap time. The sheet and blanket will be sent home on Friday for
laundering and should return with your child on Monday. Please do not send your
child’s “favorite” toy to school. This nap toy should be something that can stay at
school to avoid a bad night at home without it.
✓ Toys: No other toys are allowed at school. Your child will know that toys will be
sent home with you at the door. This is not your struggle so we will handle it if
they are unwilling to comply with your request to enforce the rule.
✓ Parent Involvement: We are in the process of planning activities that allow you
to be involved in your child’s experience at Earthshine Learning Center. Please
feel free to volunteer to read a story, tell us about your job or hobby, or share
aspects of your family culture. We love for people you know in the community or
family to come show us their “talent”. Please share with others that they are
welcome too.
We look forward to providing you and your child an excellent learning experience and
welcome you all to our Earthshine family. Let’s have a great year!

Earthshine's goal toward behavior management is not to punish children for wrong behavior but rather to
set expectations for behavior and teach them appropriate and acceptable behavior. Setting expectations,
allowing freedom to make choices, and learning from their actions are how children learn how they are
supposed to behave and are key to preventing inappropriate behaviors. Discipline and behavior
management are an ongoing daily part of classroom management by the teachers.
Praise and positive reinforcement are effective methods of behavior management of
children. When children receive positive, non-violent, and understanding interactions from adults
and others, they develop good self-concepts, problem solving abilities, and self-discipline. Based
on this belief of how children learn and develop values, this facility will practice the following
discipline and behavior management policy:
We help children resolve conflict and develop problem solving skills with peers by:
Children are encouraged to resolve conf lict with compromise. Talking about the problem and solutions with an
adult present and being certain that everyone is satisfied with the result or outcome are helpful ' in allowing

We ensure staff follow the programs discipline and behavior management policies and practices and use behavior management strategies appropriately by: Training appropriate behavior management techniques, practicing these techniques, and supporting

expectations for the children and work together to support the children following the rules. We have a
