I remember when I first saw The Bar. As with most newbar and club unveilings I got a sneak preview before itsopening night. The first thing that entered my mind wasthat we’d finally got a slice of London in Peterborough.

Before The Bar no other bar in town knew what themeaning of contemporary was. No other bar had leathersofas and no other bar had embraced the millennium by

adopting a crispier more modern approach to its décor.

It was like nothing else in town and it paved the way for plushness in some of ourvenues today. It was smart, upmarket, spacious and was housed mainly by largewindows that helped make the most of its tint of orange mood lighting. When it

Before The Bar there was nothing. That’s not to say there weren’t anydecent venues to enjoy in the city’snight scene, it’s just that The Bar hadit all. It was the only place fortownies to be seen in.

BACK IN THE DAY...

...THE BAR

opened everything about The Baroozed class, success andsophistication. If it had opened inthe mid-1980s it would’ve been ahangout for yuppies.

The Bar’s clientele were all aboutbeing aspiring managers in thecorporate world. They’d slave 9‘til 5 at Pearl Assurance orThomas Cook and work out atLiving Well in the evenings. It’swhere trendy people went on aweekend night for a glass of wineor cocktail and where they’dentertain their clients over aCaesar salad at lunchtimes.

At the time very few places gaveoff a special vibe and atmospherelike The Bar did and even as Iwrite it’s hard to actually explainand put into words. There was afeeling of being part of aweekend family, people you onlysaw or spoke to on a Friday andSaturday night. This was beforeeveryone had a mobile phone andlong before Facebook, so catchingup in nice surroundings was aspecial moment.

The Bar revellers respected their venue. I don’t think I ever saw a fight during all my weekends spentdrinking Amaretto and Coke in there. It was also a place for conversation. I can’t really rememberhow good the music was, I just know the right tunes were being played out.

And that’s because it was only ever background music for me when all that mattered was what theperson you were talking to had to say. Nowadays the art of conversation is dying and when youenter a bar everyone’s staring into a lit upscreen from the palm of their hand.

People respected the venue and I for one wasproud of it. I’ve always believed if you createsomething that represents quality and class, people will respect it and that was the casewith The Bar in its early days. What helpedit stay consistently on top of its game wasdecent management by Andy Scigala andhis team who took pride in their work. TheBar was special and I feel lucky to havebeen a part of it back in the day…

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

Page 15: ESP August 2014

FBI AT THE FLEET So, hopefully this isn’t just a flash in the pan but it seems that Italy’s poor showing in the World Cup has inspired some of the city’s young FBI’s (full blooded Italians) to unite in a way that hasn’tbeen seen since my childhood and gather together at The Fleet on aregular basis.

It’s pleasing to see what in truth is slowly becoming a dilutedgeneration of Italians doing something about celebrating and beingproud of our identity and roots in a bid to ensure our culture andtraditions continue for another generation at least, if not for longer.

In times of adversity (the current state of Italy’s football) people cometogether and through the power of Facebook a group that was formedseveral years ago but remained dormant until now is trying to keepthe Italian flame burning.

These youngsters have finally come to appreciate The Fleet is theirsto make the most of – but the relationship has to be two-way. TheFleet has agreed to install Sky Italia, so we can actually watch inItalian the appalling state of Serie A and our national team and try tounderstand why (because everything in Italy is dissected and debated)Ferrari can’t give the two best (Alonso and Raikkonen) F1 drivers acompetitive car.

We can also watch the legend that is Valentino Rossi contest secondplace in the Moto GP championship unless of course the brilliantMarc Marquez injures himself for the rest of the season. We can evenget together and support Italy in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

The first Fleet gathering of around 50 or more young (with theexception of Davide Broccoli) Italians took place for the World Cupfinal where there was plenty of pizza on the go and of course Peroniflowing at non-extortionate prices behind the bar.

Hopefully this new found resurgence of remembering where TheFleet is continues and is backed up with paying the pittance cost ofannual membership fees, which will help to ensure the building that’sas old as I am outlives me and continues to serve as a cornerstone forour community.

FITTING WINNERSAT FIRST ANDOTODISCO SHIELDMy good friend Ando Todisco passed away suddenly lastMay and as a tribute to the man we all miss so much, hiswife Estella and close friend Rai Devita organised theAndo Todisco Shield with help from Langtoft Football Club– one of the teams he used to play for.

The day was a brilliant success and almost £2,500 wasraised for the British Heart Foundation and LangtoftFootball Club by the footballers who took part in thetournament and by the family and friends of Ando whoturned out in memory and celebration of him.

So many people and businesses donated prizes forchildren’s games and raffles. There was something foreveryone at the event and it was great to see some facesand characters I remember from back in the day whenAndo and the rest of us boys were hitting the town atweekends and playing football (not me, I was rubbish) thenext morning.

The tournament was organised by Rai who played withAndo throughout their footballing days and every teamtaking part represented one that Ando played for. In afitting end to a perfect day, the team Ando was playing forwhen he died – Diligenta (pictured) – were crownedwinners of what I hope becomes an annual family fun dayand tournament. Well done to Estella, Rai, Barry andeveryone who supported the event and took part.

STOPPED BYANGLIA POLICE We’re well and truly into the classic car show season andthere’s some cracking events well worth a visit during the nextcouple of months if you’re a classic and vintage carpornographer like me.

One of the best shows in the area that I always look forward tois the Bourne Classic Car & Bike Show, which took place lastmonth. This is always a well organised event with an excellentvariety of classics and modern classics on show.

I could’ve gone home with at least a dozen vehicles that caughtmy eye but perhaps the most charming was this Ford Angliapolice car. Hopefully it’ll turn up again for others to see at theshows I’ve mentioned in Wheels on page 34.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYCLARKES!I can’t believe it’s been three years since the fine dining experience that is Clarkes flung itsdoors open in our city.

I’m a big fan of their delicious menu and inviting surroundings, so I didn’t have to thinktwice about accepting an invitation to their third birthday bash. We were talking Pimmscocktails, champagne, mouth-watering canapés and out of this world birthday cake – itwould have been rude not to partake.

Even though the economic climate is slowly beginning to turn a corner our independentsstill face a daily battle to keep their heads above water. Clarkes has survived because it’smanaged properly and the food is fantastic. Most of all it’s still serving excellence becausethe people of Peterborough are supporting it. Here’s to another three years and beyond.

COUNTRY OUTINGWITH BALDERSTONRIDE-OUTI told you last month that there are plenty of ride-outs coming up for bike fans this summer and that Balderstons are leading the way – sure enough TJ’s been in touch andhasn’t disappointed.

On Wednesday August 6 they’ve picked a great country pub to visit – the Old White Hart at Lyddington near Oakham. It’s a great opportunity to test your wheels out on the countrylanes, have a chat with other bikers and enjoy some great pubgrub! All are welcome on these events, including scooters. Sojust be at Balderstons showroom in Hampton before they setoff at 6pm.

If you need any more details give them a call on 01733 565470.

You’ve got a few weeks yet, so noexcuses for not being at a couple ofwhat I know will be great events inSeptember if you’re a boxing fan andif you’re Italian or IBM (Italian bymarriage).

First, on Thursday September 11,one of the best middleweight boxersof all time will be gracing us with hispresence at The Solstice.

Roberto ‘hands of stone’ Duran willbe the special guest at a boxingdinner where you’ll be able to hearabout a career that spanned fivedecades during which time thePanamanian won four titles at fourdifferent weights.

It was a time when themiddleweight division was blessedwith world class fighters such as

Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Haglerand Thomas Hearns – Duran foughtthem all. For tickets call KevinSanders on: 07872 601467.

A week later – ThursdaySeptember 18 – is the date whenexcellent Australian / Italiancomedian Joe Avati makes his longawaited return to the city. After afour year break from touring the UKJoe’s back with new material and anevening performance at The Fleet.

Joe’s made a successful careertelling stories of his ownexperiences of being the son ofItalian immigrants in Australia. Hisfunny stories of traditions andcertain situations brought on by ourItalian culture make for an eveningof side-splitting entertainment. Call The Fleet for tickets on: 01733 560218.

And just two days after Joe’s showis the weekend of the city’s annual

Italian Festival in Cathedral Square(September 20 and 21). Thisestablished event is always a greatcrowd puller and expect to see ataste of La Dolce Vita including food(lots of it no doubt), singing, dancingand plenty of other entertainmentover the weekend including a pop-up restaurant and hopefully aspecial guest…

It’s getting to that stage; us Perkins Great EasternRunners are trying desperately to cut out the takeaways, get our sponsorship forms filled in, and praying for good

running conditions!

Yes, Dinomite (the race mascot) and I are still training forthe run. For a change of scenery and some motivation, wethought we’d head to the Peterborough EmbankmentAthletics Track to meet other runners. The council havestarted FREE training evenings and I attended the first oneto see what they’re like. It turns out… they’re a lot of fun.

Runners of all abilities are welcome to attend the freetraining sessions that take place at the track. Each sessionbegins at 7pm with a warm up. Runners are dividedaccording to level of fitness and aspirations before beingtaken for a training run.

It was great to meet other local people also going throughthe same issues as me. I spoke to as many people as Icould to see how they were getting on with their training, and what charity they planned to run for.

One person I was surprised to see was POSH legend (andformer ESP columnist) David Farrell, who told me – “Mytraining is going well but I was bored of running on myown, so this is a great initiative to come and be a part of.I’m now training every day, sticking to a plan and I’mstarting to enjoy it. Since I finished playing football, Ineeded something to replace it, and this is it. I’m alsoeating very healthily again which can only be a goodthing.”

Anna from Werrington said – “I came down tonight to getsome tips from the professionals. I keep ‘hitting the wall’at around 5 miles and need some help to get out of this

rut. Hopefully I can get some advice and push on.”

And Justin from Paston explained – “I ran the GreatEastern last year in just under 2 hours. I thought I’dtrained quite well, but want to get less than 1hour 45 thisyear. That’s my goal anyway! I’ll be training with otherswho want to finish around the same time. Let’s hope I cankeep up with them.”

As we know, many people choose to run and raise moneyfor charity. The official half marathon charity is BBCChildren in Need but you can run for whichever charity youlike. I spoke to Carole Hughes, who’s Anna’s mum fromthe Charity Anna’s Hope, the event’s official Fun Runcharity. Carole said – “We would love as many people torun for us this year as possible. All the money you raisewill go towards helping children in this region who have abrain tumour. We are trying to raise awareness, so if wecan get as many people as possible running for us, wewill be absolutely delighted.”

If you’re interested email: [email protected]

You may know that as well as writing for ESP Magazine, Iam the Regional Fundraising Manager for ArthritisResearch UK. I was delighted to speak to a couple ofrunners doing the Perkins Great Eastern Run for mycharity. Arthritis affects over 10 million people in the UK,including 15,000 children. Arthritis Research UK areraising money towards life changing research which ishappening right here in the East of England. I’ll be runningproudly in my orange Arthritis Research UK t-shirt andhave plenty spare for anyone else wanting to run for thegreat cause too. Who’s with me? If you’re interestedemail me at [email protected]#TeamOrange.

Rachael Clarke works for Peterborough Cathedral and toldme at the training session – “This year a number ofCathedral staff and young choristers will be running toraise money towards the Choir Music Fund. The Cathedralhas over 40 young singers between 7-13 years old, whokeep the ancient choral music tradition alive, in a buildingat the very heart of our City. Funding to expand andcontinue the choristers’ musical education is vital, and wehope others might like to join us in the fun run inOctober.” You can email Rachael [email protected].

There were people running for many other good causestoo, such as RNIB and Sue Ryder. I highly recommend youconsider running for a good cause if you haven’t already. From past experience, I know that there’s no greatermotivation than knowing you’re pushing yourself to helpothers. It really gives you that extra incentive.

If you missed the first training session, fear not – there areplenty more taking place. I hope to see you on thefollowing dates:

Woohoo, the sun finally came outto play, and whilst he was wearinghis hat we were inundated withfloral attire on the high street. Wherever you look there are floral prints on dressesthrough to florals for the guys too – it’s a trend that’sremained strong all season.

I've put together some outfits that are easy wearingand will keep us cool on these remaining summerdays.

Kimonos have been around for a while this year andaren’t going away just yet. This kimono from TopShop in Outfit at Serpentine Green has to be myfavourite of all the looks. I love the clashing of colourswith the vest underneath.

Like I said florals aren't just for the girls, here I'veshown how you guys too can rock this look.

On Saturday July 19, Peterborough city centre was hometo the BBC’s Big Day Out.

The free, family fun day was organised by BBC RadioCambridgeshire in aid of Sue Ryder’s ‘Raise the Roof’ forThorpe Hall campaign. Sue Ryder (which providesincredible care for people with life-changing illnesses)aims to raise £6 million to build a new local hospice.

The sun was shining and the atmosphere was incredible– there was literally something for everyone to enjoy onthe outdoor stage, with traditional Portuguese food, drink, arts and crafts also available as the event joined forceswith the city’s first Portuguese festival.

Entertainment included The One Eyed Cats who got thecrowds dancing to their rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues.Local choirs including Peterborough Voices, Sing for LifeWomen and The Take Note Community sang songs

beautifully from West End shows. And if that wasn’tenough, there was even a performance from the formerBritain’s Got Talent winner, Paul Potts.

David Harvey, Managing Editor of BBC RadioCambridgeshire told me – “The Big Day Out was afantastic day and we’re so proud to be supporting SueRyder’s Raise The Roof campaign for a new Hospice atThorpe Hall. All the bands sounded brilliant, the crowdsturned out in their masses, the choirs hit the high notes, the Cybermen and Tardis thrilled the adults and childrenalike and Paul Potts just rocked Cathedral Square! Thebuckets were full and pledges of further support to SueRyder Thorpe Hall were many. We’re thrilled to help raisethe profile and help Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Raise theRoof!”

I was able to grab a few words with British tenor PaulPotts before he went on the stage. He was pleased to beback in our city. “I was here back in 2008 performing at

the beautiful Broadway Theatre,” he told me. “I’veactually spent a lot of time here recently due to the factI’ve been just outside of Peterborough recording my newalbum – which should be released on my birthday inOctober.”

Most people will know Paul as the man who won the veryfirst series of Britain's Got Talent. He explained, “Ihonestly didn’t expect to get past the first stage of the

show. To still be doing what I love to do seven years lateris more than I could have ever dreamed of. I owe a lot tothat programme and the opportunities it has given me.”

Unbelievably, despite winning BGT in June 2007, Pauldidn't quit his job at Carphone Warehouse until March2008. “I hung on because I couldn't quite believe whatwas happening to me,” he said. “I felt like I wasdreaming and that it would all just disappear. I wasgetting letters from my employers asking what I wasgoing to do as they needed to know whether to replaceme, and I didn’t know what to say back.”

On the topic of the popular television show, Paul told mehis favourite act to come out of it. “I’m a big fan ofDiversity. They’ve done so well to carry on going for solong in such a difficult industry and they still keep thingsfresh. I’ve had the pleasure of working with the guys afew times in the past and they’re all great.”

You may have seen the film One Chance, a British flickbased on Paul Potts’s life.“I found the film hilarious,” hesaid.“I was relieved to have James Corden play mebecause he’s such a funny guy and I really wanted for themovie to be a comedy.”

Paul’s memoir (which goes by the same name) is not quiteso light-hearted. Much of it goes into his difficultchildhood – where he was regularly bullied. “Singing inthe choir saved me from some of the bullying,” heexplained. “I would rehearse on Fridays and the bulliescouldn’t be bothered to wait. I’m not really sure why I gota hard time. I was always just being myself.”

It was ultimately Paul Potts who had the last laugh. Sincewinning Britain’s Got Talent, the singer’s gone on to dosome incredible things. One highlight being – “One NewYear’s Eve, I performed to over one million people. Youcouldn’t see the end of the crowds – it was just crazy.”

“I’m a laid back kinda girl,” says Pixie Lottand I can vouch for that as she patientlybattles through the stuttery break up of anintermittent mobile phone connection duringour interview. After back to back interviewsthroughout the day to promote her self titlednew album, standing under a tree in Londonwaiting for her taxi there’s no sign ofboredom or grumpiness from this young popstar as she enthusiastically answers myquestions.

Despite being grilled all day about it she’sclearly excited about releasing her thirdalbum which she’s carefully crafted over 2years and is her most personal yet. Knownfor her Brigitte Bardot style blonde hair andeyeliner, that love of the 60s look extends tothe soul sound of the era she grew uplistening to and says is her inspiration.

“I’ve finally done an album of the soundthat I love and it’s the same soundtrackthrough the whole thing. I haven’t gone offon a tangent at all. The last album half of itwas soul and the other half was danceypop, it was like a mixture, whereas thistime it’s the first time I’ve done an albumwhich has that consistent sound from startto finish which is exciting.

“And also I just think I’ve grown up andmatured so hopefully this will sound like mymost mature album.”

This she says is more purely Pixie and shewas determined to get it right – “I’ve beenwriting and recording it for the last 2 years,it’s taken a while but I just wanted to be aperfectionist and because it’s an album I’vealways wanted to do, I just wanted to becompletely happy with it.”

Pixie is keen to get out there with her newmaterial having released debut track Nastya few months back and is looking forward toher V Festival appearance where she plansto showcase some new tunes along withsome of her well known hits. At only 24she’s achieved so much already but whydoes someone so young relate so well to amusical era from decades ago?

“I think it’s because it’s just the bestmusic,” she explains. “The singers were thebest, they have great voices and they’realways telling such a story and there’s somuch soul and more meat to it… also thesongs are just cleverly written, the melodiesand lyrics are always really strong. They’retimeless.”

So fans can expect a much more soul-filledalbum and I wonder after all this timeperfecting its sound which tracks shefavours most now its ready for release.

“I like the up tempo because they alwaysget the crowds going but I’m definitely intothe ballads the most because they’rethe most heartfelt and emotional. When I perform them live I canreally get into the character ofthem and just as a singer they’rethe most ‘singey’ songs… you canreally let loose and go for it.”

Talking of getting into character some of youmay have seen Pixie making her TV dramadebut earlier this year in an episode ofInspector George Gently, something shesays was an amazing experience.

“I love doing new things so I’d love to getinvolved in that again and do something inthe film world at some point if the part wasright.

“I’d love to do something that’s just a bitdifferent from my personality maybe a partthat’s quite dark or something that peoplewouldn’t expect so it’s more of a challengefor me to do. Music will always be mynumber one but I did really enjoy it.”

Any film directors out there I think that’s aclear hint – and like Adele she wouldn’t beaverse to belting out a Bond tune either – “Ilove the Bond movies so that would bebrilliant and I love the style of the Bondsongs they’re always really grand – I’d beup for it!”

Pixie is a stylish, great looking girl with ahandsome boyfriend and a successful popcareer, but girls you’ll be pleased to knowthat just like the rest of us she has herissues with herself!

“I wish I worked out more – I need to getback into it,” she reveals “and personalitywise my time keeping, lateness andforgetfulness is really bad so I’m stillworking on that!”

During our chat Pixie seemed unpretentiousand down to earth, pleasantly lacking in anypop star diva qualities and was flattered tobe this month’s ESP cover star.

Her album, titled Pixie Lott is released onAugust 4, she’ll be appearing at V Festivalon August 16 and 17 and there’ll beanother single out towards the end ofSeptember so it’s a busy end to her year.

Released: August 22

It’s been nearly twenty years since there’s been a decent big-budget film based around thephenomenon of tornadoes – the Bill Paxton/Helen Hunt-starring Twister – and early trailersindicate this could fill that void.

The Hobbit star Richard Armitage is one of the few recognisable faces in a pretty muchunknown cast, as Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of erratic and deadlycyclones that will tear the town apart.

This viscerally-shot thriller literally promises to throw you into the ‘eye of the storm’ – withsome incredibly lifelike special effects – which could make this a surprise hit.

EA SPORTS UFC (PS4/XONE) Out now

The Ultimate Fighting Championship gaming experience is unfortunately going tohave to slightly regress before getting better – with EA taking over the franchisefrom the now-defunct THQ.

The series has been properly spruced up by the trademark EA touches such assensational graphics – worthy of next-gen consoles – with superb productionvalues that really give the game a UFC pay-per-view feel.

Sadly the atmosphere of the fights is generally lost in transition, with controlmechanics that don’t quite match the pumping adrenaline that flows throughUFC’s veins.

But for a first effort this still has a tremendous grounding for future entries – asyou star as Michael Bisping, Chuck Liddell, Georges St-Pierre and co.

SNIPER ELITE 3 (XONE/PS4/360/PS3) Out now

Out of the two uniquely Sniper-based franchises on the market – Elite continues tohit the spot compared to the Ghost Warrior alternative.

Using the exotically deadly terrain of North Africa during the backdrop of World WarII, Sniper Elite 3 competently expands on solid foundations laid down in previousversions of the fan-favourite series.

As American operative Karl Fairburne, taking out the Nazis with pinpoint ‘Killcam’sharp-shooting accuracy has never been more satisfying.

A very linear story and haphazard enemy intelligence sadly doesn’t do the moreopen world feel justice – but there’s still much to enjoy.

MOTOGP 14 (PS4/360/PS3/PSV/PC) Out now

This is arguably the best pound-for-pound racer on PS4 at the moment – afterproviding a marked improvement over previous entries.

With a graphical overhaul, refined handling and the most expansive version of thegame yet – with five bike classes, 18 tracks and more than 100 riders – MotoGP 14really does provide an exhilarating experience.

It’s still a little rough-around-the-edges, with a few minor glitches and visualproblems, but with a brand new career mode and greatly improved physics thisdeserves immense praise.

TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE DARK SPARK (XONE/PS4/WIIU/360/PS3/3DS) Out now

After impressing with two previous Cybertron-monikered iterations, there’s nodisguising these robots simply don’t cut it in this latest version – despite animpressive array of weaponry and decent multiplayer Escalation mode.

But sadly the storyline – as you switch between Autobots and Decepticons missions– is fairly dull, the ‘transforming’ and fighting mechanics extremely clunky, and itsadly ends up all looking rather dated.

TOUR DE FRANCE: SEASON 2014(PS3/360/PS4/PC) Out now

Previous attempts to get cycling on the gaming map were extremely dullexperiences – but this is probably about the best iteration that has been made ofthe sport.

Improved graphics, cycling mechanics and inclusion of an ‘autopilot’ switch, arecounteracted by poor presentation, lack of decent tutorials and backgroundgraphical deficiencies, but for cycling enthusiasts this is the best version yet – ifnot exactly a Bradley Wiggins beater.

VALIANT HEARTS: THE GREATWAR (PS4/XONE/PS3/360/PC) Out now

With a beautifully-crafted artistic style and a thick slice of ingenuity to boot, this downloadable puzzle-adventure tells the tale of five people all touched bythe First World War.

Some of the narration and historical facts are a little in-your-face, but thevariety of puzzles – which go from simple object collecting to safe cracking –are an engaging accompaniment to the generally trenches-based story, all foraround 12 quid.

PLANES: FIRE & RESCUEReleased: August 8

It was a no-brainer by Disney to convert the initially straight-to-video Planes – which waslater polished for a cinematic release last year – into a cash-cow, with a quick sequel takingflight to capitalise on the $220m worldwide haul of the first movie. When Dusty (DaneCook) learns that he may never race again due to a damaged engine, he joins forces withhelicopter Blade Ranger (Ed Harris) and his team, to courageously battle a massive wildfire.

WHAT IFReleased: August 20

The early reviews for this rom-com are extremely positive – giving weight to Brit starDaniel Radcliffe as a stand-out actor post-Harry Potter. He stars as a medical school drop-out who strikes up a friendship with animator Chantry (Zoe Kazan) – who already has along-term boyfriend – but their chemistry is so undeniable it begs the question: could thelove of your life be your best friend? Co-stars Star Wars VII cast member Adam Driver.

LUCYReleased: August 22

Scarlett Johansson gets a rare lead vehicle in this movie from action-thriller aficionado LucBeeson (Leon and The Fifth Element) as a femme fatale who gets a drug implanted into hersystem that allows her to use 100% of her brain’s capacity (compared to the usual 10%),which enables her to turn the tables on her captors and evolve into a merciless warrior.Morgan Freeman co-stars in his usual secondary role to add bankability.

Robert De Niro and JohnTravolta team up on-screenfor the first time ever – andshow they’ve got somedecent chemistry in thisstraight-to-video action-thriller.

Despite their obvioustalents by starring in two ofthe greatest movies of all-time (Goodfellas and PulpFiction), this is generic by-the-numbers fare –

comparable to the 2003Tommy Lee Jones/BenicioDel Toro movie The Hunted– that is only really madewatchable by the twotalents at hand.

Two veterans of theBosnian War – AmericanNATO Colonel BenjaminFord (De Niro) and Serbiansoldier Emil Kovac (Travolta)– engage in a deadlypsychological hunting game

of cat-and-mouse, to thebackdrop of theAppalachian Mountains.

With bow and arrow asweapon of choice, the twoswap methods of torture onmultiple occasions as theybattle for admission of guiltfor their war crimes – butthe movie is never reallyfleshed-out enough to makeany lasting impact.

ARGO LOUNGE TO OPEN IN THE CITYWe love some good news so it’s great to hear that the Bristolbased company Loungers Limited are to turn the Barista caféand Natwest units on Bridge Street into a new all day café/bar.

LOCAL FOOD

They already run 49 of these relaxed stylevenues (known as Lounges) around thecountry and it’s hoped the Argo Lounge willopen later this year or early 2015.

The company also owns the Cosy Club chain, one of which is in Stamford, and we canexpect a similar vibe to the look and feel ofthis new Lounge complete with retro, quirkyinterior, vintage sofas and dramatic artwork.

It will be less formal than the Cosy Clubformat though and won’t have table service, but is designed to suit everyone.

Director Nick Collins told ESP – “The citycouncil has invested a lot into theregeneration of that central area and wehope to form a part of that. Loungers arevery community minded – we really engage

with the local area and the venues are reallyfor people to use as they want, whether it’sa group of mums with their children meetingfor a coffee at 10am or friends meeting for adrink and food at night with candlelit tables.”

They promise a large selection of coffees andfood including tapas, burgers and brunch. The name is loosely linked to Katharine ofAragon and the company are investingaround half a million in the scheme whichwill also create around 30 new jobs.

There’s no doubt the Cathedral Square areahas been transformed over recent years andwe’re loving the changes. We can’t wait forthis latest cool addition to the city centredining scene.

This month we spoke to Whittlesey basedMechanic Ken Simmons, whose pride and joyis a Triumph Daytona 955i W reg motorcycle, which he bought from a friend in 2010.Ken said, “Riding and owning bikes seem to be in my blood. I joined a rock &roll club when I was 16 years old and fell in love with the noise and smell ofBritish motorcycles. I also enjoy watching the World and British Superbikes andMoto GP.

“My ultimate dream is to ride a race track myself one day, and feel the speedsthose riders can reach. The thing I love most is the freedom I feel when I’m onmy bike, with no traffic jams or hold ups – just the open road.”

Ken’s bike has plenty of low end torque so he can select a gear and ‘just go’,without having to change up and down the gearbox frequently. He’d neverconsider buying another bike at the moment, unless it was another Triumph!

Ken has some great memories on his bike. “I remember when the missus and Iwent to Wales for a biking holiday; we stayed at a converted farm. To reach theentrance, we were astounded to see that the path was nearly vertical! So Idrove half way up and realised I was suddenly going backwards not forwards –even my bike couldn’t handle it. The next thing I know, the wife’s got off and isdragging our luggage behind her…. She wasn’t happy, but we had a goodlaugh about it later and a good biking holiday in the end.”

Ken says the best feeling about being on the road is the freedom, as one of thebadges on his jacket says, ‘Live to ride, ride to live.’ “It’s a feeling I think only

Thisyear I’ve got friends over for the weekend, I justhave to convince one of them to ride pillionwith me, so that I can join in with my fellowmotorcycle aficionados.

Everyone’s welcome to this show no matterwhat you ride. There’ll be live music and a DJas well as plenty of bike-related stalls whereyou can purchase bike kit and clothing. See youthere (hopefully!).

The fact that over 100 people turned up left megenuinely overwhelmed.”

You may find it hard to believe that we have a world of microbes living in us and on usoutnumbering the trillions of cells that make up the human body 10x, however our cells arefar larger than that of the microbes.

Our human microbes (or microbiota/microflora as it’s commonly referred to) multiply frombirth and continue to develop over the first few years of life to build our health. There arehundreds of families of microbes in our digestive system, lungs, skin, female reproductivetract and other mucosal surfaces.

Without our microbes we couldn’t live, firstly we need them to know the good from the badcoming into our body, they are our first line of defence from invaders which come from food, drinks and everything we come into contact with.

There are possibly 1,000’s of various species of micro flora which gives us an idea of theimportance of this balance even if we don’t fully understand them completely.

It’s incredible to imagine this vast ‘ecosystem’ we have living within us and on us and that itmay support our health and wellbeing in numerous ways such as:

• Educating our immune cells and keeping the immune system in balance• Regulating our metabolism, producing energy• Helping to break down our foods and helping us to utilize them• Helping to detoxify toxins and carcinogens • Possibly lowering cholesterol• Promoting healthy bowel movements• Promoting production of some vitamins• Modulate inflammation, may have effect on our mood and behaviour and much more

However so much of our modern living upsets this perfect balance and causes dysbiosis whichis an imbalance of our microflora for more unfavourable ones, some of those factors are:

• Certain medical drugs especially antibiotics (whilst they can be effective, they may alsokill good bacteria) as well as antacids and more

• Poor choice of foods such as excess sugar, refined carbohydrates, low fibre diets• Alcohol• Smoking• Stress and more

When the balance is upset and not given the chance to recover then we may start to noticesymptoms such as IBS, fatigue, weight gain, joint pains, immunity issues, skin outbreaks, bloating and more. Inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmunity may also have a link toan imbalance in our microbes.

What is emerging is that diet has a powerful influence on our gut microbes and that theyhave an intimate relationship with the food we eat in a positive way (as well as negativewhen eating poor choices).

Fibre can help to feed the good guys so too can a diet that’s high in dietary phenols whichare antioxidants in plants so when eating these you not only get the benefits of thesevarious antioxidants, you’re also providing prebiotic which are literally good food for ourfriendly bacteria whilst inhibiting the growth of the unfavourable type. Some of the bestsources are berries and berry juices, fruits with skins on, herbs and spices.

Other great sources of prebiotics are asparagus, onions, leeks, chicory, Jerusalem artichoke, beetroot and banana to name a few.

Fermented foods (which we use so little of now we have fridges and freezers) were oncethe way we preserved foods but when made correctly they also contain strains of friendlybacteria such as kefir, yoghurt, sauerkraut and miso (there are many more).

Whilst it is good to eat a wide variety of foods it isn’t a good idea to add in fibre and someof the above foods too quickly as this can cause temporary wind and bloating! This ishappening as the microflora isn’t keeping up with the quick changes. So if you know you’venot been eating a good diet then make a slow change to reduce these issues.

Taking probiotic supplements may be necessary for some but always take advice for yourparticular issues.

In good gut health,

Karen

COMEDY GIGS

It was the end of a comedy era onSunday July 20 when the MontyPython team took to the stage for thevery last time at London's 02 arena. The Monty Python Live (Mostly): OneDown, Five To Go shows saw thesurviving stars performing livetogether for the first time in 30 yearswith the very last show broadcast liveon UK Gold, but also live to fans intheatres across the country includingthe Key Theatre where the sold outaudience enjoyed the crackingatmosphere. It was a superb night ofuproarious hilarity featuring Python'sbest songs and most absurd andsurreal sketches together with a fewtopical references.

I think the only way the showcould've been any more topical wouldhave been if Eric Idle had told theaudience he'd managed to getSideshow Bob from The Simpsons toappear as a special guest, and thenDavid Luiz walked on and trod on astage full of garden rakes that hit himrepeatedly in the face.

The final live show was a fitting wayfor Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Jones,Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam tosign-off. 'The four Yorkshiremen' and'The Dead Parrot' sketch wereobvious highlights, the silliness andquoteability of them haven'tdiminished over the years, but I'd alsoput the 'argument' sketch alongside

them as one of the most beautifullywritten and performed sketches incomedy history. It's such a simplepremise, but it's rarely been bettered.

The show climaxed with a singalongof ‘Always Look on the Bright Side ofLife’ that featured a number offamous faces joining the Pythons onstage including Eddie Izzard, MikeMyers and one of our local actinglegends Warwick Davis (soon to hostthe new series of Celebrity Squares!)

If you missed the show, there's achance to see the encoreperformance at the Key Theatre onSaturday August 2. Call 01733207239 or visit www.vivacity-peterborough.com. Tickets are £12.

In his absence Posh won the Johnstone’sPaint Trophy and made the League 1play-off semi-final before the shock

news arrived in June that Zakuani (in hiswords) was ‘returning home’. I caught upwith the man, the myth, the legend for anexclusive ESP interview to find out why heclasses Peterborough as his home.

You’ve said that coming back toPeterborough is like ‘returning home’.Why do you feel this way?

“Peterborough has been a big part of mylife. When I did come back, I just realisedit is where I want to be and where myfamily is used to. My kids go to school inthe city and I am delighted to be back.”

When it came to leaving the club, how difficult was that decision andhow long did it take to sink in?

“It was tough. It is one of those things. You have to look at the bigger picture. Atthe time, it was the right thing for bothparties. I didn’t want to sit on thesidelines, I wanted to play and at the timeI wasn’t playing and that is why the movecame about. As time went on, both partiesrealised that we missed each other and Iwas glad about the interest.”

In the meantime, you went to Greeceto play in the Super League, how didthat move come about?

“They’d been tracking me since theAfrican Cup of Nations. They had watchedme. They came in for me when I wasavailable and I fancied a bit of a change ina different country. It was a fresh start andI did well out there. I had an offer to stay, but when I had the chance to come backto Peterborough, I didn’t think twice.”

What was it like out in Greece, whatwas playing football in that countrylike?

“It is certainly different. In the UK,everything is geared about football. Ittakes over your life. You hear from thefans. In Greece, it is a bit more relaxed. You play the game on the Saturday andthat result is forgotten by the Monday andyou can get on with your life. There aremore things to do in Greece because ofthe weather too!”

While you were away, the club weresuccessful in the JPT, was that hardto take?

“It didn’t hurt me, I wanted to be part of itof course I did, but that is football. I wasdisappointed not to experience that day,but was happy for everyone else

connected to the football club.”

How determined are you for thisseason to be a success?

“I’ve been here a long time and wascomfortable, I think going away has givenme a point to prove. I’m hungry forsuccess. I’ve come back fit, my body fat islow, I’m eating properly, I just need to putthe performances in now.”

You have been a fans’ favourite eversince you joined the club, howimportant are the supporters to you?

“I made a good start when I joined andsince then I have never looked back. Icommunicate with fans on Twitter, I tryand do competitions and I show myappreciation after games. I think we havea good relationship. We work welltogether.”

Festival time! And when the weather’s good watching goodmusicians with a cool drink in your hand is hard to beat. InJuly The Ploughman held its annual real ale and musicfestival and I went down to see Motor City Vipers headlineon Saturday night. As always they gave a really strongperformance full of soul and harmony and they’ve certainlyearned a strong reputation amongst the area’s soul fans. Youhave a chance to see them at the Beer Festival on theSaturday night.

Before MCV I watched a very talented solo performance fromZakk Zoot Gray. He features a wide range of music includingsome Ed Sheeran, Maroon5 and some older classic covers allperformed acoustically. Well worth seeing for both his coverversions and original material. Catch him at this year’sThorney Music Festival. It’s going to be a good month!

Not long now till the Peterborough Beer Festival. Themost eagerly awaited social event in the area is on at theEmbankment and the music lined up is once againguaranteed to entertain all over the five day period ofAugust 19 toAugust 23. And I’m very pleased to seethat a lot of local bands are booked for the event this year.

The opening night is an open mic night where everyone’swelcome to perform – all you have to do is contact Staceyby email on [email protected].

The Rocket Dogs are enjoying a successful 2014 andmake a main stage appearance on Wednesday nightwhile Opaque return after a busy year touring the UK andtake the stage on Thursday. They’re followed by BurningCodes the solo collaborative project of Belfast born singerand songwriter Paul Archer, who’s had extensive airplayon BBC national and local radio.

You can’t get anything more local or different on Fridaylate afternoon than the return of The Palmerston UkuleleBand from that fine establishment down Oundle Road.

The Friday 7.30pm slot goes to the mod/psychedelic 5piece band, Psych-O-Bombs. Headlining are the Reggaeinspired dance grooves of the Rotten Hill Gang.

Finally Saturday brings us Tom Wright and his band who’sinfluenced by such greats as Stevie Ray Vaughan andAlbert Lee.

The final headline act for 2014 on Saturday night are theMotor City Vipers who fully deserve this pride of placeslot, not just because they’re local or because they’re areally dedicated soul band, the likes of which we haven’tseen in this area for many years. It’s because they give aquality performance AND clearly enjoy what they do.That’s infectious!

Finally, many thanks to CAMRA and all the organiserswho give up a lot of time prior to and during the Festival.Charities benefit, we all have a good time andPeterborough comes alive. Great job… thanks guys!

It’s my pleasure to say a huge congratulations to sometalented local young musicians who’ve won a recentBattle of the Bands event.

Over 1,000 bands entered the competition across the UKand Peterborough based indie-rock band, Albion, facedtheir greatest challenge to date at the National MMG(Majik Music Group) Battle of the Bands final and won.

Albion, the youngest band in the competition, played in abattle against five of the best-unsigned bands fromacross the UK. The final was held at a sell-out show atThe Camden Barfly in London.

Albion consists of Harry Preen (vocals), Sam Harding(bass), Caleb Carver (drums), Richard Gledhill (rhythmguitar) and George Ramsay (lead guitar). Three of theboys are students at Bourne Academy and two are atBourne Grammar.

To get to the finals, the band undewent various rounds ofcompetitive gigs to showcase their talent, including theEast Midlands regional final at The Shed in Leicester.Spurred on by winning this stage, they recorded theirdebut EP These Are Holy Days at world famous Monnow

Valley Studios and they soon rocked into the top 100 newreleases on the iTunes Chart.

They received an array of prizes including a Marshall'Haze' Valve Head with custom finish and a Natal MapleUK Snare Drum.

“We have just got to say thanks to MMG, Marshall,Natal and of course to our loyal fans that made the trekto London,” says Harry Preen. “As it was an over 18'svenue, we also want to thank many of our fans whocouldn’t come and for their many messages of supportthroughout the night. It was a fantastic evening andhopefully the start of even bigger things to come.”

After all their hard work the guys are taking a break in thelead up to their gig at the O2 Academy Islington onSeptember 5.

Albion’s EP called These Are Holy Days is available oniTunes.

You can find out more about the lads onwww.facebook.com/albionmusicuk andwww.albionband.com.

Fans of Matt Zilch will be pleased to hear the news that he’sholding a comeback gig at The Lord Burghley Stamford onAugust 24 Bank Holiday Sunday. It’ll be great to see this verypopular musician and Matt told me – “It’s great to be backperforming, and particularly in my hometown at The LordBurghley.”

It’s going to be an acoustic gig with maybe a surprise or two,Matt assures me it will be his usual slant on cover versions –“I’ll be doing some of the old material together with morecurrent stuff that nobody’s heard me perform before so I hopethey all like it.”

He’s had a long rehearsal period for the new material and Iwish him luck on Sunday August 24 and for the future.

There are some great bands on the bill at the Swiss Cottage inWoodston on Sunday August 10. They’re all attracted to thevenue and the fact that the pub is again raising money for agreat cause, namely Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall.

There's a BBQ and stalls, a raffle being held with some greatprizes and the bands appearing during the day includeRetrolux, Electric Warriors, Rocket Dogs, Be Bop A Lulas,Feckin’ Eejits, and The Collaborators.

That's a strong line up for one day and the Swiss Cottage isexpecting a good turn out. It gets under way from 1pm until late.

After the exertions of the PeterboroughBeer Festival I can recommend a perfectway to chill out on Sunday August 24 atthe Thorney Music Festival. This event eachyear immediately follows the Beer Festivaland always includes some uniqueattractions in the way of music.

This year it’s a reunion of a kind for ColinSmith, Paul Blant and Paul ‘Loop’ Allen whoplayed together for years under a number ofband names. They appear at this year’sFestival as The Wottingers. Presumablynamed after the tiny creatures on the BBCChildrens’ programme the Night Garden. Idon’t know whether this is a one offappearance for the trio or if there will bemore. Time will tell. I do know however thatnone of the said individuals can bedescribed as tiny creatures!

Also appearing for reggae fans are the verypopular Tallawah, together with thepowerful Children of the Revolution, andnew wave/pop covers band Subway 77,who feature late 70’s to early 80’s music.

Again something special comes from TheLegacy – a young Long Sutton/Wisbechband featuring the amazing vocals of 12year old Amy Palmer.

The Thorney Community Children’s Choirwill be there singing pop covers and alsoThe Peterborough Community Gospel Choirwho I’ve seen a number of times rendersome classic soul/gospel songs.

In between the electric acts Zakk Zoot Graywill be performing as a guitar soloist. Imentioned him earlier having been veryimpressed at his performance in July.

Organiser Andy Stuffins, who puts in ahuge amount of time to bring this day toThorney, told me – “As always I’m sure theacts assembled will provide a great day outfor the family. There’s a licensed bar andhot food and drink, children’s inflatablesand stalls.”

And yet again charities and communityinitiatives benefit with all money raisedsplit between The Brain Tumour Charity,Diabetes UK and Thorney Rugby Club.

The Thorney Music Festival takes place onSunday August 24 starting at 11.30amuntil dusk. It’s at the Bedford Hall in StationRoad.

If you like your live tunes there are two days of performances in Spalding kicking off with anafternoon of music in the Market Place on Friday August 29 from 12noon to 5pm.

The South Holland Centre’s Youth Takeover group is linking up with Young Cut from LincolnDrill Hall to bring you another exciting extravaganza of music and merriment! This year,Music in the Market Place will be spread across two days starting in Spalding town centreon Friday August 29 and finishing at Lincoln Drill Hall on Saturday August 30. This mini-festival promises to be better than ever before featuring young artists from across thecounty.

Even better it’s free – just turn up!

Local music legend Gizz Butt is back from his 116 mile charity bike ride to the DownloadFestival having raised thousands for the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy, Child Line andTeenage Cancer Trust with the Heavy Metal Truants.

Gizz told us – “Cycling from Alexandra Palace to Castle Donington was one of the greatestmoments of my life. An experience like that never leaves you. It’s the mixture of greatscenery, exhilaration, a wonderful bunch of lads, pushing yourself to the limit and the glassof beer at the end! And you can always put a pair of shorts over the lycra! Thanks toBristows cycles and Woodston cycles for helping me get prepared.”

Now for the first time ever he’s taking a short break in August from the local scene, but nota break from music… and not just to recover from the bike ride!

His band The More I See are touring in the autumn so he’s preparing for that plus TheEnglish Dogs’ new album The Thing With Two Heads has just been released on CandlelightRecords so he’s busy pushing that too.

The album’s available from all the usual outlets so go grab a copy.
