CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Problem Background
The single most important instrument of structure in a course is the
Syllabus, which outlines the goals and objectives of a course, prerequisites, the
grading/evaluation scheme, materials to be used (textbooks, software), topics to be
covered, a schedule, and a bibliography. Each of these components defines the nature
of the learning experience.
Prerequisites limit the student population to those with certain kinds of
learning experiences, usually other courses. The grading or evaluation scheme tells
students what kind of learning activities are to be valued (e.g., assignments, tests,
papers, projects), that is, the currency of learning in this particular course. Topics to
be covered specify the content that the instructor feels is important. The schedule
provides a timetable for learning, usually with milestones in the form of due dates or
tests.
Function and Components of a Syllabus A syllabus has several functions such as:
The first function is to invite students to your course--to inform them of the
objectives of the course and to provide a sense of what the course will be like.
The second function is to provide a kind of contract between instructors and
students – to document expectations for assignments and grade allocations.
The third function is to provide a guiding reference – a resource to which
students and instructional staff can refer for logistical information such as the
schedule for the course and office hours, as well as rationale for the pedagogy
and course content.
Generally, a syllabus should include the following information:
1. Learning Objectives: What students will gain or take away from your course. Why
these objectives are the most important skills/knowledge for the course (helpful if
objectives are included for each topic/session).
11
2. Goal/Rationale: How the course relates to primary concepts and principles of the
discipline (where it fits into the overall intellectual area). Type of knowledge and
abilities that will be emphasized. How and why the course is organized in a particular
sequence.
3. Basic Information: Course name and number, meeting time and place, instructor
name, contact information, office hours, instructional support staff information.
4. Course Content: Schedule, outline, meeting dates and holidays, major topics and
sub-topics preferably with rationale for inclusion.
5. Student Responsibilities: Particulars and rationale for homework, projects, quizzes,
exams, reading requirements, participation, due dates, etc. Policies on lateness, missed
work, extra credit, etc.
Syllabus Development Principles :
Scientific . Overall material and activities that are being charge in the syllabus must
be correct and verifiable scientifically.
Relevant. The scope, depth, level of difficulty and the order of presentation of the
material in the syllabus in accordance with the level of development of physical,
intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual learners.
Systematic. The components are functionally interconnected syllabus in achieving
competence.
Consistent. The existence of a consistent relationship (steady, consistent) between the
basic competencies, indicators, subject matter, learning experiences, learning
resources, and assessment systems.
Adequate. The range of indicators, subject matter, learning experiences, learning
resources, and assessment systems sufficient to support the achievement of basic
competence.
Actual and Contextual. The range of indicators, subject matter, learning experiences,
learning resources, and assessment systems pay attention to the development of
science, technology, and cutting-edge art in real life, and the events that occurred.
Flexible. Overall component of the syllabus can accommodate the diversity of
learners, educators, and the dynamic changes taking place in the school.
