Headquartered in Oklahoma City, Wood Group ESP was established in 1983 as an esp equipmenttesting and service company. Sub pumps were once consid-

ered to be economic only inhigh-volume applications.Today, Wood Group ESP offerselectric submersible pumps ina wide capacity range from 70to 64,000 BFPD (barrels fluidper day). These include designsfor onshore and offshore appli-cations in casing sizes of 4.5-in.and larger to depths up to15,000 ft. With only the wellhead,and fixed or variable-speedcontroller visible at the surface,these ESP systems offer asmall footprint and low-profileoption for virtually all artificiallift applications.

Wood Group ESP offers a fullarray of abrasion and corrosion-resistant pump equipment,

power cables, fixed or variablespeed controllers, downholesensors, and data communica-tion and control panels. Thetypical application is to provideartificial lift for oil, water andbrine well production. The sys-tems can also be used for pipe-line booster service, waterfloodinjection, mine dewatering, fireprotection, irrigation, directinjection, cavern storage, com-mercial water systems, geo-thermal industrial applications,coal bed methane and gas wellde-watering.

The intake section of a sub-mersible pump functions as asuction manifold, feeding thewell fluid to the pump. In stan-dard applications, an intakesection can be a simple inlethole adapter attached betweenthe seal section and the pumphousing. In applications withhigher gas/oil ratios (GOR) andlower bottom-hole pressures,the well fluid may contain sig-nificant amounts of free gas. A gas separator, designed toseparate free gas from the wellfluid before it enters the pump,replaces the intake section.

The rotary gas separator, withthree abrasion-resistant bear-ings standard, comprises threedistinct stages. In the first stage,a low NPSH (net positive suc-tion head) impeller is used toimpart energy to the fluid. In theseparation chamber, a spinningsteel rotor is used to generatecentrifugal forces to separatefluids based on density differ-ences. In the crossover section,the lighter density fluids are

ejected from the gas separatorto the well’s annulus and heavierfluids are directed to the pump.Gas separators are designedwith special metallurgy andbearing systems to extend theiroperational lives in adversewell conditions.

In applications where theamount of free gas cannot behandled efficiently by rotarygas separators, tandem rotarygas separators, a high-volumeXGVS™ separator or an XGC®

gas compressor can be used.The XGVS uses a vortex sepa-ration chamber and the XGCsystem introduces a compres-sion chamber downstream fromthe tandem gas separators. Thecompression chamber allowsfree gas to be compressedback into the solution whilesimultaneously breaking largegas bubbles into an increasing-ly homogenized solution, whicha submersible pump can han-dle without gas locking. Gasseparation assemblies are avail-able in TA (3.38 in.) through TJ(6.75 in.) series options.

The seal section is located be-tween the motor and the intakeand performs the followingfunctions:

•Houses the thrust bearingthat carries the axial thrustdeveloped by the pump

•Isolates and protects themotor from well fluids

•Equalizes the pressure in thewellbore with the pressureinside the motor

•Compensates for the expan-sion and contraction of motoroil due to temperaturechanges in the motor

Seal sections can be used intandem configurations forincreased motor protection.They are available in both bag-type and labyrinth-style designsto meet specific applications.

•TR-SBG and TR-DBG sealshave elastomeric bags thatfunction as a positive barrierbetween the motor fluid andthe well fluid.

•TR-STD seals feature alabyrinth-style seal, whichcreates a tortuous path ofprotection from well fluids.

•AR (abrasion-resistant) sealsare designed to provide radialstabilization and minimize vi-bration transmitted to the mo-tor. Up to four chambers inone housing are available.

•HT (high-temperature) sealsincorporate specialized elas-tomers and thrust bearingsfor increased bottomholetemperatures.

•HL (high-load) seals employincreased load-carryingcapabilities for compressionor larger pumps and/or ex-tremely deep applications.

Wood Group ESP submersibletwo-pole, squirrel-cage, in-duction electric motors aremanufactured in a variety ofhorsepower ratings, operatingvoltages and currents to meetextremes in pressure and tem-perature requirements. WoodGroup offers four series ofmotors with outside diametersof 3.75 in., 4.56 in., 5.44 in. and5.62 in. to operate in 4.5-in.and larger casing.

Wellbore fluids passing overthe motor housing act as cool-ing agents. The motors arepowered from the surface viasubmersible electric cable.High-temperature motors areavailable for applications withbottom-hole operating temper-atures up to 350°F, and ultra-high temperature models areavailable for temperatures upto 500°F. Improved designsused in our high-efficiencymotor line feature elongatedpentagon-shaped rotor barsand open stator slots thatincrease flux utilization, lowercopper losses and result ingreater horsepower per lengthof motor. For extremely corro-sive environments, motor hous-ings, heads and bases are

offered in ferritic and stainlesssteel materials. For less-severeapplications, the outer surfacesare carbon steel. The equip-ment can be treated with flamespray coatings for added cor-rosion protection.

Every motor is subjected to abattery of factory tests to con-firm electrical integrity, no-loadperformance and bearing sys-tem performance.

VECTOR CONTROL SYSTEM RTUs ARE LIKE HAVING ANENGINEER AT THE WELL

Our Vector Control Systemconsists of two intelligent RTUprogrammable controllers: the VCS 1600 (fixed-speed)and the VCS 1800 (variable-speed). These controllers arethe most comprehensive andflexible, open architecture,motor control devices avail-able, offering accurate dataand reliable performance.

Using the latest advances inhardware, software and tele-communication technology,both units offer programmablecontrol, motor protection, dataacquisition and, most impor-tantly, data memory with thecapability for real-time dataanalysis. VECTOR III VARIABLE SPEEDDRIVES WITH VSG™ TECHNOLOGY

Using state-of-the-art technolo-gy, Wood Group ESP has devel-oped the Vector III series ofVariable Speed Drives (VSD)incorporating VSG (variablesine-wave generation) technol-ogy, which produces a nearsine-wave output with low har-monic content. This results inbetter motor performance,extended motor and cable life,and lowers operating costs.VSDs allow conversion fromconstant Hz power to variablefrequency. The performance ofthe pump and motor vary withthe frequency, allowing theoperator increased flexibility of their ESP installations. TheVSD also provides soft starting,which is more beneficial to runlife than a traditional “acrossthe line” system startup.

Available in power levels to suitany ESP application, the VectorIII VSDs offer field-proven per-formance and premier featuresnot available in previous sys-tems. The Vector III VSDs areavailable in NEMA 3R oilfield-rugged enclosures and withdesign features for 6, 12,18

and 24-pulse operation. TheWood Group VSD is the onlysystem to be fully compliantwith IEEE 519 without the useof external filters and systemmodifiers. A variety of controlfunctions are pre-programmedwith our specially designedfirmware allowing easy adjust-ment to motor speed, auto re-starts, retries, delays, stoppingmethods and more. The standardSmartGuard III has 8-datachannels to measure intakepressures, wellbore and motoroil or winding temperatures.Option IV includes pump dis-charge pressure, and OptionsV-VII add measurements ofvibration, current leakage andflow rate. ESP system control

Tertiary recovery projects inmany fields require water alter-nating gas injection to prolongfield life. Wood Group ESP hasdeveloped special pumps forthese applications. They fea-ture enhanced housing and

DOWS SYSTEMS

Downhole Oil Water Separationrequires special equipment toallow efficient and clean sepa-ration and re-injection of liq-uids in disposal zones. WoodGroup ESP has combined sev-eral special technologies tooffer a field proven separationsystem at rates approaching10,000 BFPD. pended within the coiled tubingvia permanent earth magnetswithout mechanical clamping

users. Wood Group ESP hasdeveloped ESP BEND™ propri-etary software that is based onactual laboratory bend testingof all ESP components. ESPBEND predicts the effects ofcasing deviations. Our appli-cation engineers use this pro-gram to assist clients with realand scientifically derived an-swers to questions aboutequipment performance indeviated conditions.

BOTTOM DISCHARGE SYSTEMS(BDS)

These systems allow the injec-tion of fluids from one produc-ing zone into another zone inthe same wellbore. The re-injection of these fluids allowsre-pressurization of one zonefrom another without the needto pump the producing zone tothe surface. This often elimi-nates the need for costly, high-maintenance, leak-pronesurface equipment and the en-vironmental issues associatedwith producing unwanted liquidsto the surface.

COILED TUBING DEPLOYMENT

Using lower cost coiled tubingunits to install sub pumps pro-vides a lower overall cost to theoperator. Operators have beenlooking for more economicalways to deploy electric sub-mersible pumps for many years.Our Standard Intake System

(SIS) and Bottom Intake Sys-tem (BIS) in conjunction with aunique cable suspension sys-tem and Multi-inflatable PackerSystem (MIPS) make the entirepackage possible. SIS employsstandard design equipmentwhile BIS requires speciallydesigned pumps and seals tocomplete the package. Oursystem prevents any damageto the downhole cable orcoiled tubing while running.Additionally, it requires no spe-cial fittings. It is now possibleto run and pull submersiblepumps without a more expen-sive drilling or workover rig.Not only is our installation tech-nology faster and safer thanconventional deployment, iteliminates the costs associat-ed with a drilling or workoverrig. It also allows live well inter-vention and is most often employed in applications wherespace becomes a significantfactor, or where operating conditions are extreme.

HIGH TEMPERATURE (HT) WELLS

Submersible pumps are beinginstalled with increasing fre-quency in higher temperaturereservoirs. Higher temperaturesare encountered as well depthsbecome deeper. In order toextend equipment run life inwells with high bottom holetemperatures, Wood GroupESP has made importantchanges to the material and

design of downhole motors.Insulation systems have beenimproved and new varnish pro-cesses have been employedas a winding encapsulationmaterial to increase perform-ance. Additionally, rotatingclearances in the motor havebeen modified to provide addi-tional thermal expansion madenecessary due to high motortemperatures. In order to selectthe proper horsepower for aspecific application, it is im-portant to note that motor tem-perature rise is a function ofhorsepower load, motor design,motor voltage, voltage wave-form and heat dissipation char-acteristics of a particular wellapplication. Wood Group ESPhas the technology and experi-ence for all types of ESP appli-cations, including the demandingrequirements of HT wells.

MOTOR TESTING

Motor testing determines themechanical integrity of theprime mover. Inspections ofthe electrical and thrust-bearingassemblies are performed toreduce new motor start-up fail-ures and extend motor run life.Phase I and Phase II dry-outservices can be conductedwithout disassembling the motor.

PUMP TESTING

This service determines if apump can be confidently re-run and provides a fingerprintfor future performance com-parison. Wood Group ESP iscapable of testing all brands ofsubmersible pumps to theoriginal manufacturers’ specifi-cations, allowing for an inex-pensive means of validatingpump performance. All testresults are stored in our eSmartdatabase. This assures thatyou have an accurate historicalrecord of your equipment forfuture reference.

SEAL TESTING

Seal tests further reduce oper-ating costs by allowing the re-use of some seal sections.Typically, the seal section isreplaced after every use. Ourthorough testing of the seal,thrust bearing and dielectricstrength of the oil allows thisequipment to be re-run withconfidence.

COMPUTERIZED CABLE TESTING

These tests allow the integrityof new, used or repaired cableto be evaluated. Again, byemploying our proprietaryeSmart database, we can trackthe cable from well-to-well overits useful life. Our cable testingprocedures follow the IEEE1017-1985 acceptance test fornew cable.
